The CMP may offer 03s maybe some 1917s in the future. Just keep checking their website from time to time.

Read all you can at the CMP forums, then start asking for Garand books for birthdays. Find and join a club that shoots mil-sup, and has different matches. In short you have just entered a whole new style of shooting. You will be amazed how good you can shoot at long range with out a scope. You will do crazy things to obtain more and ever more Greek HXP ammo.

In a nut shell, it's fun, Welcome abroad.

I'm surprised to see the 1903A3 going for more than the M1 Garand at local gun shows these days..

I've got a original A3 unmolested with a low TE and MW 2 groove barrel. You can pick up a sporterized for 250-300 down in Dallas.

On the CMP Forum, that's known as the DBU Letter, short for "Don't Bother Us!" It means your order is in the pipeline being processed in order of receipt, and emails and phone calls to CMP Customer Service checking on the progress of your order will just be annoying people for no productive reason. It generally takes at least 30 business days from this point until your order shows up on the CMP Estore with an official order number, and it should be shipped to you within 5-7 days from the time it shows up there.

I just came home and checked and recieved the same e-mail. So much for my calcalations and counting. Let the pacing begin. deadeye

Good Afternoon,

I snail mailed my order on 2/19. Got my DPU on 3/2 for a H&R Service Grade. Checked the order list today. Nothing yet. Will keep you posted.

I spoke to the Southern store when I ordered as I had some questions regarding accessories. They said that they are getting rifles out in 30 to 45 days from when the order is assigned a number so this is right on schedule.

On another note, My understanding is that all of the Springfield service grades have new wood, probably birch. What should / needs be done to this stock when I get it as far as making it look good and protecting it from the elements?

From the pictures in this thread the stocks look beautiful! I'd want to bring out the natural grain of the wood but not have a shiny "drill team" looking stock.

Boiled linseed oil? Tung oil? Something else?

Also, is there any cosmoline on these stocks that has to be removed? What preparation if any needs to be done to this wood?

Thanks!

According to Leon, who is the CMP South Store armorer, steel wool then tung oil...steel wool then tung oil...steel wool then tung oil....you get it.

Unfortunatly yes alot of the Service Grades are now comming with ugly new commercial birch stocks.
There is no cosmo on them as they are new

100% pure Tung Oil works nicely on the stocks.

A few months back I used 2 thin coats of it on my M1A and it really brings the wood to life and leaves a satin, not gloss, finish.

I put one coat on the M1 and I'll likely do another in a week or so. It takes some time to absorb into the wood. Even with one coat of tung oil, it looks much better already.
FYI, I didn't steel wool it and it seems fine.

Ignition overide-

I would have to think it would be better to have the 03A3 as they aren't making any more of them so there value will just increase and if Obama and the administration get a second term they will probably set aside some time on there agenda to push some big gun control and then prices will go crazy

But I darn sure like to shoot. I bought a new remy 700 sps varmint in .308 for a steal of a deal at Cabelas last fall, so I usually shoot that, keeps the time off the old girls, my m1a, garand and 1903A3

This SA SG showed up today.. Do these cmp replacement stocks have any finish or do most folks do the tung oil or boiled linseed deal? I asked for a wwII receiver or USGI stock.. this one has an april '45 receiver but a cmp stock.

They are usually very dry and will need multiple thin coats of BLO, let dry between coats

Gideaon,

That is a nice rifle. I would 10X rather have that nice new stock than a old beat to hell GI stock. Mine came with the same one. Took some dark walnut stain and made it look beautiful. Then took tung oil to it. If you want, you can always order a CMP walnut stock off the E-store. They are brand new and spectacular. I have one on order right now. Its basically a boyd stock with a cmp cartouche and its been fitted for the M1 garand.
