I need to check out Goodwill for Cowboy gear! We did have lots of Old Cowboys here in Seattle back in the days
If ya want the "john Wayne" western look go for it......... If ya want historically correct look go elsewhere.

There were two Wayne movies that were mostly historically correct, Rio Grande and The Shootist. Rio Grande is the late 1870s, The Shootist is 1901. Pretty much everything else he did he wore 1930s/1940s clothing & boots, 1930s leather gear and carried weapons that hadn't yet been invented for the time period he was portraying. But that was true of most westerns of that time. ;)

That's a fact, Outlaw Josie Wales kept things fairly close although they did sneak in a few trapdoor Springfield rifles. Ya gotta look close to spot them but they are there.
Watch the Horse Soldiers, all the yanks are using 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Carbines...........

I forget what movie it was, but "volunteers" were showing up at the Alamo, wearing six-guns.

??????? 1836, if those 183 had had Winchesters, Santy Annie would have had a lot harder time, than what he already had.

The Shootist is a great movie, with Wayne’s characters dieing from cancer and his last run through was letting everyone getting a piece of him

I guess there's something to be said for ignorance. The more you know about history the less entertaining old westerns are. They are starting to get better from a historical aspect. Clothing, saddles, gear, weapons etc. are starting to get more HC.

Oh I still enjoy a lot of the old westerns but I don't let the anachronisms get to me, it's just entertainment. I tell people all the time that Hollywood produces entertainment and not history. Take the movie Young Guns, loved the movie but historically about all they got correct were the names of most of the people involved and the fact it was the Lincoln County War. I love the fact that all the Billy the Kid movies portrayed Tunstall as an older man, he was 24 when he was killed by the Murphy/Dolan faction. And they always have Murphy as the primary antagonist, Murphy was dying from late stage cancer and had turned everything over to Dolan by that point and was almost not involved at all.

Lords of the Rings was not historically factual!!! I mean 3 rings for the Elvin Kings, under the sky, and only 1 ring for the Dark Lord in his hall of Doom.

I get the impression that many here ruin movies for everyone around them by continously calling out historical inaccuracies.
Not really. I never point out inaccuracies when watching movies with a group of people, it's rude and most people don't care.
