A friend of mine left for the weekend to go to Disney World and asked me to watch his place, feed his dog, etc. I've been doing so evey day. We usually shoot in his back yard (in the county) with both neighbors 200+yars to either side with trees in between. No issues in the past.

My father in law picked up some tupperware and I was heading over to check his house, so I tell him to tag along and bring his gun. I bring my Ruger Mk II and 357. We check on the house, let the dog run around. We then break out the new guns and commence to shooting as I've done numerous times over the past 3-4 months. About ten mins later, i hear some guy yelling so I place my gun in my holster and approach him.

Enter "Red faced Rob" the neighbor.

"Hey you jack asses, don't you realize I can hear you shooting at my house. This is too loud."

This is about the point I would like to have a "Here's your sign" T shirt on. I just give him a "damn that's a stupid comment" look. My father in law grabs my younger son. He goes on ranting about how this isn't my house and I had no right to be here shooting, etc. Never once asked us to stop.

I then approached him and introduced myself. This is when I learn his name, Rob. I then asked if he would like to speak to the owner. I then call my friend and put him on speaker phone. My friend then says i can shoot there and everything is kosher. I try to calm him down but he keeps yelling and being rather obnoxious.

He then tells us to "stop what the F were doing or I'll call the cops". I then told him his language was inappropriate, especially in front of my son and I then ask him to leave before I call him in for tresspassing. He then whips out his phone and calls 911 and is yelling at the lady and gets in his car and leaves.

Fast forward about twenty minutes, during which time we pack it up and wait on the sherrifs officer. The SO then goes by the house and goes to see the neighbor and then comes to our house. I've met him before in the local ER (I'm a family practice resident) We exchange pleasantries. He says we are completely in the right, but that there is a noise code after dark. He says we can commence shooting.

I call my friend and he agrees. I was going to quit, but to be spiteful I sent my loudest 357 mag stuff downrange...only had 9 rounds left. In hindsight, probably not neighborly, but dang, if the guy was nice and just asked us to stop I would have without hesitation.

Anyhow, what say yall. Keep shooting or find another place. My nearest place isn't in my friends back yard but maybe 10-15 mins away at some family land.

well do you have a ar 15? do you know how to bump fire? i have had a few neighbors in the past get upset about my shooting, one lived over a mile away! but it better to get along with your neighbors if you can. csa

Find a reason you need a propane cannon. Fire the cannon at 5 minutes 'til the evening noise ordinance takes effect, every night, for a week. If he's still pissy, start firing it in the morning, 5 minutes after the noise ordinance expires.

It a different interpretation of the golden rule. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". I'm a nice, pleasant fellow, almost all the time. If, for whatever reason, I were to be a dick to someone, I would have them be a dick to me in return, thusly, I am still abiding by that rule.

Besides, it sound like the neighbor is one of those that just needs something to bitch about (bitcher without a cause??), so really, if you give him something to bitch about, you're actually giving him something he needs.

I guess the right thing to do would be to respect his wishes. If I were in your shoes, I would buy the loudest, most ear shattering cannon out there and shoot it as much as I could:evil:. I really hate jerks like that.

do you handload?

1) load up a bunch of rounds with the largest amount of the slowest powder and the lightest bullets you have data for.

2) invite friends with 357's over (with homeowners permission of course).

3) share your creations with said friends

4) enjoy the fireworks

I was going to quit, but to be spiteful I sent my loudest 357 mag stuff downrange.

Spiteful and stupid, if you ask me. Yeah, the guy had no reason to come at you like he did, but what happened to being the bigger man?

If nothing else, do it for the rest of us shooters. The last thing we need is more people getting the impression of us as being spiteful & childish when confronted about our hobby.

Going out of your way simply starts a pissing match that no one can win. The neighbors will go out of their way to find the slightest violation to complain about. You really want to spent every waking minute defending against annoying infractions?

After a while the neighbor will get used to it and if it has been going on for some time he apparently has accepted it in the past.

kingpin and moxie,

perhaps you missed the , "in hindsight....." remark.

In all seriousness, this guy needs to get a life. That being said, I think that we will generally avoid shooting there in the future. No need to have a pissy neighbor. Of course, "red faced Rob" already had the nickname....

You did the right thing. You may want to buy a .500 S&W just to piss him off more.

If it happens again, disregard said neighbor and continue commencing fire. Maybe tell him that you can't hear anything because of your ear protection.

Wow, out here in rural Nevada, I even drove down the street about 3/4's of a mile away from the houses, and my pissy neighbors still called the cops on me, and I only shot 2 mags through the AK, then some .22's.

I guess party poopin' neighbors are everywhere...

I also agree that it isn't a good idea to be antagonistic, but the OP established a few things here. He had permission. It was NOT after dark. I wondered if he might be shooting illegally within city limits, but apparently the sheriff didn't think so.

I think neighbor needed to have it demonstrated to him that the sound of gunfire is not an infringement of his rights.

Having said that, I would have resisted shooting off the last few shots. The neighbor would have gotten the picture when I shot again the following Saturday.

Just think of it this way. Where I grew up it is VERY gun friendly. But all of the fields where I hunted pheasants as a kid are now covered with newcomers from California. I can shoot in their backyard, and it might be legal, and there isn't anything they can do about it. But I know that the first chance they have when they ARE in charge, They most certainly WILL do something about it. Just sayin'.

You should have said to the guy that he just put himself in great danger by trespassing, you guys were shooting at the crazy carnivore garden gnomes.

Ditto on the M44. You can buy a decent Mosin Nagant M44 carbine for about 100 dollars and an 880 round can of HEAVY ball for 160 dollars or less. This kicks a bit but it is ungodly loud and makes an entertaining fireball. Perfect for redfaced Rob.

Just remember to clean the gun with Windex or hot soapy water as the ammo is corrosive.:D

I would wait for your friend to come back, I wouldnt start a problem he has to live with. Now if your friend is up for it......

I wouldnt purposly tick the guy off, but I wouldnt for go shooting either.

Same thing happened to me a few years back, except the neighbor just called the cops on us without asking us nicely to stop.

Turns out the cop they called was in an old unit I was attached to in Iraq.

Cop told the neighbor there was nothing he could do and asked if he could join us.

(Now if I can just find someplace around here to do that)

reminds me of the time i had a neighbor cross a fence, open carrying a gun, walk past numerous 'no trespassing' signs, to come tell me that i was disturbing her children by shooting my weapons. I inherited a private range that has been used for 30+ years and these new neighbors tried to intimidate me. had the cops called half a dozen times. I had a discussion on Legal that went on forever. Just stay on the right side of the law, they can get used to it or buy ear plugs IMO.
