I was just watching Dallas Swat, and they did a raid on a house. They found drugs and weapons along with some Black Tallon ammo and one of the swat members said it was good to get it off the streets because it is armor piercing!.
these guys are swat , I would expect this from some street cop but this suprised me.

Their jobs are to know how to shoot their weapons and handle dangerous situations. They may not know 9mm parabellum from 9mm browning long/short. They don't have to, in their jobs. They hear some newscaster talking about AP black talons, so they assume it's true.

there's no reason to assume anyone is an expert until they prove themselves, regardless of their title. that applies equally to gun magazine writers, college professors, military personnel and people on internet forums.

Kinda like a current one they have been running, the guy's retiring from SWAT and going to narcotics, so he has to turn in his AR issued to him for SWAT, he takes it in and the guy receiving it has to verify the serial number, so the retiring moron points this AR right at the guys stomach!!!!!!

The second part to this is the guy with the AR pointed at his gut, doesn't say a word, doesn't push the barrel aside, so it's obvious that neither one of these guys has a clue about gun safety! Neither one of these guys should be carrying a gun for a living till they get retrained in proper gun handling procedures, fricking morons!

I am a former Deputy Sheriff, things like that were NOT TOLERATED!

I watched part of it last night...some guy was shooting at some uniformed cops that had answered a complaint. He had them pinned down with rifle fire, from what sure sounded like a full auto AK....However, when the commentator was explaining why the officers issue handguns were no match for the rifle, he stated "A Glock 22, used by many police departments, has and effective range of 75 yards. But the police here thinK the BG is using an SKS rifle which has an effective range of 450 yards." (there was more about how the longer barrel on the rifle made it more accurate than the short barrel of the pistol)

Well...yeah...sorta...maybe. "effective" and "accurate" being VERY LOOSELY defined terms I guess.

And how many can tell the difference between the sound of an SKS and an AK at 400 yards (which is where the majority of the cops were). And while I believe there's probably a way to make an SKS fire full Auto, I would definitely think "AK" when hearing a 7.62x39 on full auto.

Unfortunately, I had to leave to pick my sister up at the airport so i didn't actually see the gun they recovered (if they showed it). Did any one catch that part?

I was kind of surprised that they showed it, but last night they did a raid on a house and their intel was WAY off. Nobody realized it, but the house had been divided into a duplex and there was a family living in the left side that had nothing to do with the drug house they were hitting. I felt really bad for that family having to go thru that.

I'm pretty firmly pro-cop, but have seen some pretty bad examples of both gun handling and gun knowledge from police officers on TV and in person. I gather that the majority of cops are not gun people and do not care to be.

I've stopped watching...

Dallas Swat ever since one of the team members fell off of their APC as they approached a suspect's house.

We all make mistaked, it's just with this particular program they've continued to make mistake after mistake, which would be laughable if it weren't such a serious business.

in las vegas pd history. the apartment wall looked like a building in beirut.
no followup on the weapon or bg............

I saw that too. That was insane. Those poor cops who were trapped in that stairwell while the guy fired away at them with a rifle. Then he broke through the wall of his apartment into another apartment so he could get a better shot at them. Thankfully no officers were hurt. They were just responding to a routine call of the smell of marijuana coming from the apartment.

I tried to watch that show when it first came on but was forced to give my self a cease and desist citation for inflicting the stupid rays that are radiated by that show onto my brain.

Coming from a family of cops, I can tell you first hand that the average cop knows NOTHING about firearms, much less the one attached to his hip, and that the repositories for all stupid gun related rumors are the brains and squad rooms of cops.

Before anyone jumps my balls on this: some cops are great gun people - a fieend of mine is a great shooter and guy, and he doesn't perpetuate the BS many that many cops do, but he is definately not the rule.

One of the reasons that cops know alot of fake stuff about guns is that they tend to be afraid of guns because they are regular people - that is that they are not well trained enough to have the proper state of mind when dealing with some of the areas that cops are forced to work in today (like, say...Detroit or Harvey, Illinois...my former stomping grounds).

Cops are given cursory training in random police duty stuff, given some nice-nice talk, and sent out into a very ugly, hateful world of people whose only goal in life is to stimy the police and break the law.

This of course is not true of your average cop working in the lilly-white suburbs who just seem to get a hard-on when it comes to bullying people.

Two of my wife's sibs are LEOs. Although both are more or less pro-RKBA, neither would own a firearm if they were not LEOs. When I was a student employee at a university PD, most of the cops were into firearms. One was even a kitchen table FFL before Bubba became president. Those who were made fun of those who carried only because they had to, because those who didn't like guns usually barely qualified.

If SWAT is truly afraid of armor-piercing ammunition, perhaps they should stop rolling around in APCs. That or start raising funds for an Abrams.

I contend that the SWAT Apache helicopter will happen within this decade.

That was Fugitive Strike Force and the segment was dealing with US Marshalls who responded to the call even though at the time they were trying to locate a fugitive.

Naw, the commentator said at least one round found its mark. Obviously, most of the 605 rounds hit things other than the bad guy.

I found it interesting how they reasoned a Glock was only accurate to 75 yards. I am going to have to tell my Glock shooting buddy that he can't outshoot me at 100 yards because his gun isn't accurate beyond 75...according to the TV expert commentator.

That is just real world...and they do make mistakes. They also do a lot of things right, but a lot of what they do isn't very formalized.

For those of you that saw BOTH Dallas SWAT APCs in pursuit of the hijacked 18 wheeler several weeks ago, you would have seen SWAT officers hanging off the back of the APCs during the pursuit, obviously airing out during the long chase, but what got me was the fact they were hanging off the back and there were several who were NOT wearing helmets or armor.

I will say this for some of the Dallas SWAT officers, many do live in some really nice houses. I liked the guy who took his girlfriend to see about buying a half million dollar airplane.
