I dont use profanity...

Yet, on at least 5 or 6 separate occasions here on THR, ive been attacked quite vehemently and un-high-road-ly for having a difference of opinion than others. It was quite shocking... and ive learned that it was no safer to have an opinion different from the norm here than anywhere else.

So yes, I definitely censor.

Nobody should feel they have to censor views.

Too late.

I occasionally edit to make sure that I have expressed myself clearly, but I don't censor myself.

I got rid of the idea that passionate expression of an idea implies rude and or foul language a long time ago.

By 1992, I had come to the conclusion that if I was going to straighten out every bozo on the Internet, that would be a full time job.

I have had some very interesting long conversations on THR and other boards. Some have been extraordinarily educational. I filter out most of the responses, and pay attention to those from whom I can learn, or with whom I enjoy talking. There's a lot of noise, but you get to chose those to whom you will respond, and those you will send to the big Bit Bucket in the Sky.

So all in all, I don't feel any need to censor myself.

Mike

I think some people need a course in reading comprehension. Censor has a number of meanings, the one here means do you consider (or think about) what you've written before you hit the "send" button? It is not about the heavy hand of goobermint smashing your printing press. Hello?

I keep it pretty close to the chest as far as what firearms I own.
Although I appreciate seeing peoples' collections...I just don't hink it's a good thing to advertise what one has in the collections.

No, I feel that I do not need to use vulgarity and other slang terms to espress my self. I believe that using such language lowers one to a smaller intellect and I try to keep from looking and sounding like a fool.

if i spoke plainly in my normal fashion i'd continually break the coc. out of respect for the site i have to censor myself.

<Censored> with the <Censored> <Censored> <Censored> so when I'm talking about <Censored> <Censored> <Censored> <Censored> <Censored> generally not but <Censored> <Censored> <Censored> <Censored> <Censored>

so nah, not really.

(it's a, it's a, it's a joke son, humor that is.)

.

I often censor/reconsider what I write on this forum.

There are a lot of people here who take themselves very seriously, and
any criticism of any aspect of anything they spew is taken as deep
insult to the fabric of their character.

Seeing as how there are around 100 people here who know everything
there is to know about everything, and are so incredibly versed in every
tactical aspect of everything, it would be foolish to question them.

Its amusing, but often not worth the hassle, so I usually censor.

Its for my own benefit, I suppose.

On the other hand, when it descends into a flamewar where all parties are mearly coming up with less and less imaginative ways to say 'you suck', is there really valuable discourse going on?

Are you likely to get valuable discourse when both parties descend into attacking each other's character, rendering the probability that they'll give weight to each other's words virtually nil?

I agree, flaming is pointless and lends nothing to the discussion, as does vulgarity. But there is a huge difference between flaming and a heated, passionate debate. Nothing worthy ever gets done that isn't done with passion.

i feel that this is one of the more overmoderated boards i am on, so, consequently i almost never post here anymore.

I try to stay on topic, avoid flame wars, and watch my grammar and spelling. Aside from this, whenever I post, I try to ask myself if my post(s) were to come back to me, would they haunt me? On another gun forum, an experienced criminal lawer responded to someone's earlier angry and inaccurate posts, and I quoted part of his response below. I thought it was good advice for all who participate in these public forums.

Here is another tip for everyone who participates in forums like this. If you are ever involved in a SD shooting and you are prosecuted by a savvy prosecutor, he/she will look for things like these postings - and, since SD cases are hard to win without the defendant taking the stand, get to read each of them back to you in cross examination. It is not that hard to jerk your computer on a warrant, get your forum name/s and then find hundreds of ridiculous statements you have posted. Relevant at trial - of course they are. They go to intent and your mental state. I recently saw this used by a prosecutor in an assault case. The defendant was a "martial artist" who had posted some really stupid remarks on various forums. Not my case, fortunately. For your own sake, stop posting these remarks.

If you mean "censor" as, watching my language, to remove the more colorful metaphors from my language, then yes.

I do NOT feel there are things I cannot bring up; I commonly speak my mind on here freely.

Holy Smokes!

ArmedBear wins the zen self referential award for Godwinning out on himself in a post about censoring himself, in which he actually did censor himself!

It's a trifecta!

[wipes a tear]

That was beautiful, man!

There is no need for uncivility. I'll use some vulgarity if its really what is needed to get my point across, but it hardly ever comes to that. Life is so much happier if I make even half an attempt to show some respect towards others

Nothing changed. CYA...

Sorry Bob. The curmudgeons who run the site felt that things weren't as bleak as you painted them to be. Nope. Nothing's changed. The forum's membership hasn't scattered to the wind in disgust. We're all still here. Most of us are happy.

I'm glad to see you're still here, too. Apparently we aren't as bad as you thought we were when you joined up and told us how miserably the Staff was runnin' the joint.

There are different types of censorship.

The vocabulary mores are weird, but don't impair communication.

Some things are truly off-topic--abortion, for example.

The irritating cases are the inconsistent ones:

* It's not ok to say 'I hate this gun!' because it's Noise. But, it's perfectly ok to say 'I love this gun!' which is also Noise. I think this is a kind of Pascalian wager against offending someone.

* Ad hominem against liberals gets barely a glance, but serious scrutiny when directed the other way.

* Soldier worship is sacrosanct--unless you're talking about another country's military.

Over 1000 posts on each other forums in the same amount of time vs 132 here...nuff said. I merely said that things could be IMHO better, more organized, more efficient and more friendly. But just like big business and big government all we hear is "nothing is wrong".

Oh well.
