Do you REALLY clear the chamber @ every fence crossing / gate opening??

It's all good--no need to argue it further. You really should try dove hunting sometime; it is a serious rush when the birds start flying.

Yeah, dove hunting is a lot of fun when they're working. I'd not equate it to the rush of a flock of snow geese setting their wings after calling into the deeks or even a flock of teal or whatever duck. The limit is higher than ducks, but you get about as much meat with a limit of ducks. LOL Geese, well, not sure this year, but 20 birds in the past.

When you're working ducks or geese, the last thing you want is someone to rack the action on a pump, though. If you can't rely on your safety, just stay home. On geese, you would have time to pump the gun just before the shot, but me, I just flick off the safety, or thumb the hammer as the case may be. My 10 gauge is an H&R single shot, no consideration for safety, was just more affordable on my budget than a BPS 10. In a few years, I may upgrade to a Browning.

Well, he gets the fence up, and puts the pig inside. Pig weighs about 40 lbs or so at this point. The pig roots around a bit and finally hits that electric fence, lets out a squeal, and takes off...Right through the fence on the other side, leaving a vapor trail that looked like a space shuttle launch. Right on over the hill and out of sight.

ROFLMAO! I've got a really funny mental picture from your excellent description. LOL! See, this is how Texas got so danged many feral hogs. LOL!

if im out with my hunting buddies we hand off the guns...but if im alone, then its unload time, its just common sense, you never know what might happen.

Yes, I REALLY clear the chamber.

Hence, I came home empty-handed yesterday when I was negotiating a canyon, some quail finally flushed out, and I swung my shotgun only to hear "click".

If it presents a danger to me or my companions, yes. If not, no.

I'm a big fan of adapting decisions to circumstances. One-size-fits-all actions are for fools and bureaucrats.

I agree, but...

Outside the hunting forum, you'd be a dissident, here. At least that's how I'm treated when I make crazy statements like that, or suggest using my brain. ("All guns should be treated as if they're loaded", for example, is a rule that need not be followed blindly when said gun is a break-action shotgun that's carried open, you can SEE that it's not loaded, and wouldn't fire even if it were.)

I religiously cleared my chamber because my wife came along on the hunt (she's been involved in training and handling our dog). When it's just me, I only clear it when I don't think I could pitch the gun away from me in an emergency. When there's someone else around, that strategy doesen't really cover all bases.
