Well, here is the scenario and what I did. I'd like to know what you all would do ...
I had an appointment with a specialist on referral from my primary care physician. I've had the apppointment for three weeks. I was out running around town today handling some other business and I was carrying -- point being, I didn't go there directly from home. Due to the nature of the visit, a consultation, I wasn't expecting to disrobe so I didn't think much of carrying into the doctor's office. I figured at most I'd have to have my blood pressure checked. I was carrying strong side IWB.
Anyway, as it turned out, I saw both the specialist and a general practitioner who was learning the particular procedure that I was consulting about. The GP was a woman and the specialist a man. So, the nurse takes my BP, and then the doctors come in and we talk a bit. Near the end, the specialist asks me to disrobe for a brief check over. I was caught off guard.
I didn't know either of these doctors. However, they had a waiting room full of people and my car was in a parking garage blocks away. I know the doctors were busy and running down to the car for something on pretext when we were nearly done would have pissed them off.
So, I came clean. I told them I was carrying and that if they preferred I would take the gun out to the car and return. They said that was not necessary, so I took off the holstered gun and lay it under my coat on the examination table. I showed them my ccw. Turns out the woman's fiance is a prosecutor who wants to get a ccw and I gave her my card as she said she wanted him to call me about that. They checked me over, then left the room and I got dressed and put my gun back on. I never unholstered the gun while they were in the room.
The most difficult part was having that reather sexy doctor staring at my business end while the specialist handled my manhood! Very embarrassing!

So, what would you all have done?

In addition to what Preacherman said, I usually dress and undress without anyone in the room. I would have put my firearm in my clothing (hidden/concealed) and not left the room until I got dressed. You did well. I don't think that most of the doctors and medical personnel would have taken that as well as yours here in the PRK.

i almost got caught in the same position a couple weeks ago. i was in a wedding and had to get fitted for a tux. the thought never entered my head. i was with a good friend who was driving his soft top jeep. got to the shop, stood around while waiting for another group to be fitted. glanced over and saw the taylor reaching around a guy to measure his waist. though "oh crap." couldn't put it in his jeep, the soft top was down. thought about wraping it up in my jacket and having my buddy hold it, but though better of it. ended up just griting my teeth and hoping. when she measured me she felt it and said "cell phone?" i said yeah but a minute later she lifted up my shirt and saw my piece. she kind of stepped back and said "you a cop or something?" i said, very casually, "or something." i think she took that to mean i was saying yes, i was a cop, cause she started making small talk about she used to date a cop, blah blah blah.

man, i'm so sneaky i should be a ninja:evil:

Since you were carrying legally, why did you offer to take the gun out to the car? Is there some state law against legal handguns in doctors' offices where you live?

I was being polite. In a few weeks I am going to be on a table with this man cutting into my body. If he doesn't want guns in his office, I am not going to argue with that! I know, 2nd Amendment, CCW and all that, but there are times and places when other things outweigh simply having a right to do something. Sometimes you have to think of what is the right thing to do. I am not going to make my doctor uncomfortable for any reason.

Had the lady doctor and the specialist switch roles at the end, there?

Anytime you make it out here to Ewetah, I'm buying you a beer. I'll even listen to a sermon

Um, I wouldn't have offered to take it to the car. I would begin to disrobe. My gun would remain holstered.
Yes, this has happened to me.
Once, the Phys. Assistant asked me to pull my shirt off to do a stethescope check, when I wasn't expecting it. I pulled my shirt off, and got a small gasp. No, it wasn't my physique. I explained I have a permit to carry and got some simple questions. Sounded like middle-of-the-road uneducated on the subject questions. "Why do you carry?" "How do you get a permit?" that sort of stuff.
Don't forget, most medical professionals are just that, professionals. Some are socialists that will let thier personal bigotry get in the way of your personal choices. My choice would be to avoid them.

No big deal in Michigan...unless

If the doctor's office is in a hospital, then we have to leave in the car. However, for a stand-alone, private practice, there is no requirement to leave in car.

I too agree that I prefer to dress/undress in private. That resolves the issue. Although I have experienced some medical people who will "linger" afterward writing notes. A gentle, "May I dress in private" usually works.

Very professionally handled. You made us (collectively) look professional and worthy of possessing that which we should be able to.

I think you handled it very well. Last visit for me was fun...when it came to step up on the scales, I started to empty my pockets...wallet, keys change, knife, bigger knife, two mags to my .45....still hit 200# (should have kicked the shoes!) Nurse asked if I was going to the shooting range. I had locked my pistol in the truck. Doc is cool but I'm not so sure he would be OK with the gun.

...Just For Fun...

The next time a nice looking doctor like that asks you to disrobe....just say, "Okay, no problem. You first" with a smile. I did that and my doctor cracked up. Fortunately, she had a sense of humor.

My sidearm, by the way, ended up discreetly laid under my shirt on the chair nearby on top of my trouserrs.

Last time I went to the doctor I left the piece in the glove box. It was the first time I was seeing this doctor and I was seeing him about a mole on my back so I knew I'd be taking off my shirt.

In the future I think I'll just wear in it ... I'm dying for them to ask me "why do you carry a gun?" because I've got the snappy comeback; "Same reason I'm here to see you, I want to make sure I live a long and healthy life". :p

Hawken50, you did the right thing ... if you're getting fitted for a tux you have to make sure they fit you with your carry piece in place or when you get the tux it'll be too tight (you weren't considering wearing the tux without your gun were you?) :D

As a matter of fact i did not carry while wearing the tux, as i got really, really drunk at the reception. in fact i'm told (i don't remember myself) at one point i asked the brides mom to take her top off:what: luckily, she said it was the funniest thing she'd heard all day.

I would have just gone about my business. AFAIK having a holstered gun doesn't change your vitals. :)

The less you make of it, the less other people will make of it, methinks. When people see a gun in a holster, they immediately think "cop" anyway.

So, what would you all have done?
I'm afraid I would have "grown" some in light of the fact that there was a sexy GP watching me.

Had a drop-dead gorgeous blonde once give me a lower GI.:( I don't think I'll ever be that embarrassed again. At least I hope to God not. Only thing that kept me from going to 3'6" from 6'3" was her total professionalism.

BTW, nice going. You handled it quite well.
