Drew my handgun for the first time today

I was sitting in the living room of my apartment, and all of a sudden heard a woman screaming bloody murder. Poked open the blinds and not 10 feet away from me on the sidewalk outside was my next-door neighbor and a 'disadvantaged minority youth' tussling on the ground. I didn't know if he was trying to rob, murder, rape or what. I immediately went out the front door. I don't specifically remember thinking to draw my handgun, but I do remember holding it at a low ready as soon as I was through the door. As soon as I did, I saw the perp running perpendicular to me about 20 feet ahead. He was already running pretty fast, and as soon as he saw me (and my gun?) he kicked it into high gear around the corner of the apartment building. He had the victim's purse. I was going to keep running after him, but I was losing ground, and the victim was still screaming bloody murder. I didn't know how seriously she was injured, so I turned around, holstered and went over to where she was. I'm sort of kicking myself now for doing that, because according to some other witnesses he jumped the complex fence and into a waiting car. They didn't see the license plate, but I might have been able to. Anyway, the victim wasn't hurt other than emotionally, and a few scratches. Called 911 and waited around for the sheriff's deputies to show up (a half hour later) to take info.

After it was all over, I went back inside to continue what I was doing before: killing hookers, running over pedestrians and committing general mayhem in Grand Theft Auto on my PS2. :evil:
 
I'm glad you had enough self control to keep things from exploding out of control, and I'm also glad that the woman next door had a neighbor as valiant and brave as you. Now days, it seems like for fear of getting slapped with a lawsuit, most people would just close the blinds and call the cops.

GTA3? But you're playing video games, so you inherintely hold no value for human life, right? :evil: Thank you for dispelling that myth to the general public, now if you could only own a variety of "assault rifles" armed with a bayonet that spews out AP rounds... :D

Ok, you did good- no shots fired and no one (physically hurt).

Hope the lady is ok.

Side question, as I sit here on my couch, typing away on my laptop via 802.11b WiFi...I'm not armed. The Benelli is loaded and upstairs in the bedroom. My G30 is loaded and sitting on the counter in the kitchen.

Were you carrying while at home? Just curious how many THR members actually carry while in their castle.
 
I have a firearm within reach while home all the time. Whether on me or in the nightstand. Even keep one close by whilst I shower. Better to have and not need than need and not have! IMHO!

Well not the passerby, but I definately felt the desire to empty it into the perp. But at that point, he wasn't a threat, and I'm not about to shoot anyone for a purse-snatching.

I had my G19 and an extra mag. I was planning on going out, but my plans changed and I hadn't bothered to go back to my bedroom and dump my wallet, keys, cellphone, extra mag, etc. on the dresser. I generally carry at home unless I'm showering or sleeping.
 
I suppose the question of carrying while at home really depends on the physical layout of the home in question.

Our house is a three story town home; first floor is garage and storage, stairs up to second floor where I'm sitting. Another flight of stairs up to the bedroom.

I figure if someone tries to gain entry from street level I've got enough time to jet to the counter in the kitchen and grab the Glock. If it's the middle of the night, the alarm is on and well... the goblins have to get up TWO flights of stairs, both in full view of me from the bedroom doorway, with the alarm blaring and me with the Benelli AND my cranky wife (she's always cranky when she wakes up... ) with the Glock 23.

But if I had a single floor house close to the street, I could easily see myself carrying at home.

You done good boy, and you are a credit to your race(human). I have to admit that I do LOVE my GTA 3! I put in a couple of hours most every night, during commercials. I dont even bother with the missions, I just like seeing how long I can last before the Cops, Feds, and Army take me out. and I love stealing helicopters :D

Agree with Jim March. You done good. Looks like you naturally have good instincts for quickly analyzing the situation, prioritizing, and then acting decisively. Thumbs up to you for being a good neighbor and human being. :)
 
Something to consider for future events. What benefit did you really stand to gain by putting your life in danger by chasing down the perp? My guess is that you didn't feel like you were in danger since he was running away and you had a gun. That could have been fatal reasoning.

Chasing the guy and getting the license plate probably was the absolute wrong thing to do as you would unknowingly put your life in very real potential danger. It could have been set up as a getaway ambush. Simply put, the perp's partner waits with the car and a gun. As his buddy runs to the car, it is his job to stop whatever people might be chasing him if they are chasing him. That is the problem of chasing people. You travel over distance and are in a quickly changing context where you don't know much about what is going on around you in the new environment and you are target-fixated on the guy you are chasing.

There is no reason to risk your life for somebody else's money or material objects.
 
Double Naught Spy brings up a good point. The thing he misses is that the whole thing could have been a set up. The neighbor lady might have been paid to draw you out where a marksmen could have shot you as soon as you stepped out your door. Their intent the entire time could have been to steal your handgun and your PS2. Next time lock the doors and call the police from where it is safe. Your material possessions are not worth your life.

A million what ifs. The only thing that matters is your neighbor is alive and you are alive. All I can say is good job.
 
Good job. I wouldn't have gone after the BG either since like Jim said, she could have had any sort of life-threatening injury.
 
If it was me, I'd probably have gotten that guy, by the means that my dog only gets fed in the evening, so during the day, he's always out to beef up his diet consisting of some dry dog food with real meat.

What most people underestimate is the speed a Great Dane can take off if told so.....a gun is good, but a dog has it's uses as well.

It would have been good if you could have gotten a look at the car, but as you didn't know if your neighbor was badly hurt, she needed to be the priority.

It is good that you were there and responded. That was just what the perp was counting on not happening.
 
I misspoke earlier when I said that GTA: 3 was the game I play all the time, what I really meant was... GTA: VICE CITY! Oh man, do I love this game.

This is exactly why we need less CCW holders! The perpetrator is just a misguided individual who has probably had a rough life.he saw the gun, and was probably emotionally damaged by having someone draw a gun on him. Don't you crazy extremists see? It's simple logic here! ;)

Sometimes I'll continue wearing the gun until I hop in the shower before going to bed...sometimes I'll disarm immediately. But if I know I'm leaving the house later, whether it be 5 minutes or 5 hrs, I'll leave it on.

I have pretty much always had my P32 in my front pocket ever since I bought it. When I carried a 1911, I almost always removed the holster and gun when I walked in the door, unless it was just for lunch. Now that I have the Kahr, I tend to leave it on until I'm pretty much in for the night.

As I type this, the only thing I'm wearing is a baggy pair of drawstring shorts and my P32. An always gun.
 
Oh, well, YEA. I mean, everyone should just bow down at let their neighbors get shot! It's the poliitically correct thing to do!!!

After all, isn't that what we should be doing? We could worry about what the liberals think,....... WHILE PEOPLE GET KILLED.
