I've been invited to a wedding in N.Y.state wife wants to go. So I will be taking my rv and driving from my home state of Georgia. Leaving all my guns at home. So far I'm taking a stout cane and a small non locking blade pocket knife. Any suggestions other than stay home?

Well, millions and millions of people drive through NY all the time without needing a gun so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Just be smart and avoid bad areas and you'll be fine. The only thing that would worry me is some sort of crisis event taking place along the way. It would be nice to be armed then.

Take a shotgun, there are probably some features that aren't allowed there that may be OK in GA but a quick online check will answer that.
Also know that different states have different views on personal defense.

You can take a long gun.

  • No "assault weapons" -- current definition is semi-auto with detachable magazine and one feature: pistol grip, folding/collapsible stock, bayonet lug, or flash hider. Mini-14 is OK.
  • Shotguns can't have any of the following: folding stock, thumbhole stock, detachable magazine, fixed magazine that holds more than 7 rounds, forearm pistol grip.
  • Keep gun unloaded in the car, preferably with ammo in a separate container and/or compartment, like gun in trunk, ammo in car, for example. The point is that you shouldn't be able to load the gun while you're driving down the road.
  • No magazines over 10 rounds, period, even fixed magazines. Exemption for .22 rifles with tubular magazine -- those are OK to have any number of rounds.
EDIT TO ADD: If you're going to or through New York City, there's a whole different set of rules. In that case, I wouldn't take any firearms.

Georgia to Long Island means going through New Jersey, which is even worse than NYC. Leave the guns home and have a good time.

More paramount than a having a gun is awareness of your surroundings and not putting yourself in a position to be compromised.

Driving through NYC and my past experiences...

It's more important for me to have an active GPS to stay on my intended route than to be able to defend myself should I begin to wander aimlessly and lost as has happened before.

This is sound advice. I hate being sent to work in NJ or NY. It means leaving the pistol at home. I can't back across the Delaware River fast enough.

Also make sure you don't have any loose ammo or spent casings rolling around the trunk or under the mats, etc. If you are going up 95 you will be driving thru some oppressive areas of silliness. It's just not worth it to even try to bring along anything that can end up costing you thousands of dollars as well as some time in a jail cell.

Keep long guns secured as outlined by FOPA and you'll be fine. NJ firearms laws suck for sure but are light years better than NY. Most of the people who "warn" about driving with guns through NJ have little knowledge of the laws and have never been there.

I was thinking of a single shot shotgun for protection in the rv when parked. Not in N.J., I would go through N.J. non stop except for fuel and would lock it up unloaded.

Don't go.

I have cousins who live in anti gun states that were getting married and I refused to go on just that premise. In the long run there were no hard feelings.

If you feel inclined to go anyway then I have no sound advice. I do wish you luck.

My wife and I drove all across the State 15 years or so ago, a few others up there too. From Boston to Niagara Falls then back down through Manhattan. Kind of surprised at how much nothing there is up there 5 or 6 cities and a bunch of nothing. The thruway was kind of nice but if it wasn't for the rest stops between the east and west lanes, there isn't a lot to see except land.

Jimbo555,

I traveled to New York twice a month for several years without a gun.

Just use good common sense and you'll be fine.

New Jersey can easily be bypassed by going from Maryland into Pennsylvania. staying close to the Delaware River and crossing into New York State at Port Jervis. From there take I-84 and US 6 crossing the Hudson to Peekskill, then south through New York City to your Long Island destination.

To be armed for the vast portion of your trip, the firearm(s) can be left for cleaning (or a minor repair) at a gun shop in North Eastern PA. Easton, Stroudsburg,,Milford and Bangor are all decent possibilities. The gun shop will have to put the firearm into their bound book because of the overnight(s) stay but no 4473 should need to be filled out upon your retrieval, even though you are not a PA resident.

I have done this more than once, having many New Jersey and New York State cousins and a sister to visit. This way, you can be armed all the way from Statesboro, GA (home of THR :D) to NE PA and back.

I know that in over 20 years, I have never driven unarmed from South Florida to the northeast without a firearm either all or part of the way, always staying legal of course.

Well sure, if you don't mind going a few hours out of your way.

With New Jersey, where I was born and raised in Ridgewood, a few hours can be worth it. :what: Plus,he carries the firearm all the way to the NY border from Georgia.

Plus ,Port Jervis to Glen Cove is a nice scenic drive parts of the way, while in NJ you are chugging up the Jersey Turnpike or Garden State Parkway just looking at the marshes and looking out for NJ State Troopers! :D :uhoh:

I have spent more hours than I care to remember driving the GSP and NJ Turnpike. I have family there, but nowadays I let them come visit me instead. But back then I even survived a trip to Camden - ironically, to visit the very heavily armed battleship NEW JERSEY!

There is only one of me in Florida and a couple a dozen of them in NJ & NY (cousins), plus a much older sister in Morristown. So ,Sergei, I have no choice in the matter, as much as I wish your scenario was possible.

I do take a gun as far as possible on every trip. Congrats on surviving Camden. Seeing the Battleship New Jersey had to make it worth while. It's a source of pride to all of us Garden Stater's.

Don't worry about it.

I haven't heard of any spate of shootings on the Interstate Highway System, of late. Especially, overall, on the route you'll be taking. I live in the Baltimore region, and my concern about getting shot on I-95 is akin to my concern about a fuel tanker exploding next to me in the Fort McHenry Tunnel...zero.

If I ever needed to, I'd carry, in Sandtown-Winchester or Harlem Park, etc. But I don't.

Never understood why some folks want to carry ALL THE TIME; I've read comments from those who strap it on when they get out of bed, just walking around the house...I hope I'm never that kind of a 'prisoner' in my own home.

Just sayin'...

You can't carry in the "Free State" outside your home. So I understand your thinking. Ex Annapolis resident and happy about that. ;)

I carry whenever, and wherever I feel the need to. And I have a real need to, sometimes, unlike MANY others.

So I don't understand THEIR thinking....:D

(Hoping to be free of the population and traffic glut, sooner than later...)
