Just curious why flying isn't being considered.

I get the utility of the RV on a lot of levels but driving into the NYC area it has significant disadvantages - to me. Obviously the political gun climate flying isn't any better but if you are stuck with that then "embrace the suck" as they say and use it.

Interested on the thoughts about that. Enjoy your trip most of all.

Fire extingusher

Among the "non weapons" that you can legally posses are the fire extinguisher.

Remember it is NOT a weapon, and NEVER WAS INTENDED TO BE SUCH.

But it will act faster and hurt much more than Mace ,might even cause real damage to the eye's or lungs.

Also serves as an impact tool during or after an attack is thwarted.

Military style compact shovels,TRAIN WITH IT,then keep it handy = it too is NOT A WEAPON.

Just happened to be at hand WHEN YOU WERE ATTACKED.

Harbor Freight sells cheap spanner wrenches,With any martial arts training they make GREAT impact weapons and are CHEAP.

The 10 or 12" as well as the 14" are among my favorites.

they carry in the belt well and are there to "check tire pressure" [ bounce check, ask any trucker ].

I would also look at a magazine fed NYS compliant long gun [ mini 14,mini 30 Ruger or M1 Carbine ]

Easy to keep close in a RV and unloaded with a mag close by [ but WELL hidden ].

I was born and lived in NYC for 25 years, now live in Western NYS = huge difference in the laws.

Do not allow any pocket knife to be seen, even a small blade with a pocket clip can be cause for a stop & frisk.

As was mentioned,Look HARD at the Sullivan Law ---- it is NOT your friend.

I'm an advocate of always being armed but there are some states and countries in which the risk is not worth the trouble.
While riding through Canada we kept a Glock Shovel with the edge sharpened for cutting roots, a large can of bear spray, and an Estwing Camp Axe and we figured we could hold our own against man or beast.
I am anticipating a ride up through the New England States sometime in the near future and will leave the guns at the base camp.

If you don't go into or are just passing through NYC, you can bring a rifle or shotgun to New York. That is what I would do if I was in your situation.

The recent instruction from the New Jersey Attorney General to police officers on the transport of firearms in this state:

http://www.nj.gov/oag/newsreleases16/Transporting-Firearms_Guidelines.pdf

Carry this and a copy of the relevant Federal law on the interstate transport of firearms with you while driving through New Jersey. Only stop in New Jersey for true emergencies. Obey all traffic laws. Keep the phone number of this lawyer with you in case of arrest.

Jimbo555,

I traveled to New York twice a month for several years without a gun.

Just use good common sense and you'll be fine.
Until you are not. The Orlando night club folks were all ok, until a little after 2AM.....

I would be unwilling to be umarmed.
