"You're not really a revolver guy, are you?"

Mr. Nightcrawler, to answer your inquiry, as a matter of fact I own only one semi-automatic, a GLOCK 21 which while it is a excellent defensive weapon, accurate, and quite reliable and is on my hip as I type this; I consider is a piece of fecal matter. It has no other redeeming character, it is butt ugly and made of plastics and is only questionably safe. I own a number of S&W's which are prized by me and have no appriciable collector value, but they're mine. I also own a Ruger SP101 2 1/4 which I'm carrying if I don't have the GLOCK and an RG piece of junk that I talked a kid out of and gave him an excellent hunting knife for, to keep him from getting in trouble, or worse. I use it for a paper weight.
I will admit that I do not fit the pattern or the mold of most who frequent the many gun forums. When I was younger and before health reasons took my abilities away, I enjoyed roaming the hills of Eastern Tennessee hunting small game and fishing the many streams, river and lakes. Other than the small collection of S&W's and the two defensive handguns, I don't fit the demograph. I recently saw on another forum a thread concerning the conceal carry of a S&W model 500. To many that maybe of real interest, to me it is one of the most ridiculiuos concepts imaginable, and I voiced my opinion in a logical way, with kind demeanor, and tempered with judgement. I enjoy some of the threads / questions here on THR and the S&W forum; and become involed in a few. If you observe haw long I have been a member and the number of posts I have made you will see, I am not very active. So back to your question. I am a "revolver guy" they have all the lines and designs of fine mechanical contrivences, they are as some say "sexy". Firearms for me are a hobby as with my Smiths or are a means to put meat on the table, occasional target shooting or for defense of myself, my family and my castle. Have a wonderful day. Pistol Toter:)

I've really come to love the .38 Special...it may have eclipsed the 9mm luger as my favorite cartridge overall. Low pressure, easy on gun and shooter, flexible power levels (from target load to +P+ near-Magnums), accurate, easy to reload, versatile and low cost. WHat's not to like?

I think if you're not intending to do any big game hunting the 357 is the most versatile caliber you can own , but if big game is part of your needs a good 44 magnum would be the way to go .

I struggled with this one. I was between the .357 and the .44 magnums. I chose 44 magnum because, at the end of the day, there is more versatility due to the higher power on the upside, and because it is equal in terms of accuracy, and because I love my custom Ruger single actions chambered for it!

I would have to say .38 special. It has a light recoil, and is just an all around fun round to shoot.:) A close second would be a .357

The one I enjoy shooting most, overall, is the .22 LR. If we go centerfire, I have to say the .44 Remington Magnum, in a S&W Model 29.

The only center fire revolver I have is .38 special so it got my vote. If I had a .357 or a .45 Colt or a .44 mag. I would have gone there. I need to buy more/bigger guns.
Mark.

44Mag:

High end of rational conventional carry revolvers -- tactical, shoulder and belt holsters comfortable with DA and SA.

Power range from rats to moose.

Midrange loadings superior to most +P and magnums in smaller calibers.

Economical cast bullet shooting.

Rifle chamberings.

Well established accuracy record.

Well established hunting record.

Accurate out the box with few "surprises" in the tolerance area (chamber throats, bore size, etc.)

Huge selection of reloading components.

Über caliber performance without über caliber price using reloaded, Buffalo Bore or Garrett ammunition.

Just plain bloody fun to carry around off road and pot 'yotes.

.44 mag for all the reasons mausgun listed.

I'm a huge fan of the .357 mag. But if I had to give them all away and keep only 1 revolver, it would be my super blackhawk.

I really agree with this whole post. I still prefer .45 Colt because of the history and because the Colt SAA, my favorite revolver comes chambered in it... but that's a decision of the heart, not the head.

Again, fine post!

If I had to go centerfire (voted .22 because that's what I shoot the most and love to shoot), it'd have to be .38/.357. Versatile with a better range of available gun sizes, right down to pocket carry, than any .44. The .357 will kill about anything that needs killin' in a bigger gun, too. Also have a carbine in the caliber.

But, I'll stick with the .22 as my number one fun gun.

I chose .22lr. It seems that everytime I buy a big bore, I end up getting a .22 just like it. I love 'em. I shoot more .22 by far than any other round. When I deer hunt with a rifle I always have a .22. While I don't have any real close neighbors, the ones I have would probably get upset if I fired as many .357/.44's in my backyard as I do .22's. Having trouble hitting anything with your .38 snub, get a .22 snub. Want to practice 100yard shots for deer, get a .22 just like your hunting revolver. I hate to think how much $ I would have spent learning DA with a .38. With my .22, I was getting real good results within a couple of bricks. Number 1 fun gun.

.38 Special. A pleasure to shoot and a good self-defense round as well.

.45 Colt

.45 Colt

.45 Colt

It will do everything I want with sufficient power and excellent accuracy. It's easy to load. It's available in DA and SA guns.

I have tried many calbers, but my favorite is the .357mag
Recoil with of .357mag loads is nill. While it is a gimmer for open carry, a 4" L-Frame can be CCW'd with the proper holster and belt. 125gr JHp's for SD. With loads such as Buffalo Bore 180gr LFN it make a great deer, and hog hunting round.

While they make .45 acp revolvers, I have never seen much point in having one since there is such a large varity of good semis severial of them which now carry 13 round magizines
If you asked me "quickly, what .45 acp caliber handgun do you want right now"? It would be a revolver chambered in .45 acp. I like the concept of this caliber in a revolver alot but I can't get over the .357/.38 bug. I tend to rely on .357mag. that's what I voted.:) god bless variety and choices, though.

I finally got a nice sunday which i had no plans for and the weather is decent so i went to the range this morning with the S&W 500 for its first time

took a few boxes of Magtech 400gr

i decided to start at 25ft for first

i got loaded , pulled the hammer back ( i wanted to shoot single action for first ) took aim , made sure i had a good grip , and fired

the flash was big , muzzle lifed 2-3" , kick was like shooting a 44mag

it was very fun to shoot , off the rest i shot it one handed with no problem

we got up to 25yrds and last shot was 3/4" above dead center on the target.

out of my 4 revolver rounds id say this was my fav.

it was very fun too shoot

4 are

1. 500 Mag , 2. 44 Mag , 3. 454 Casull , 4. 45 Colt

cant wait to shoot it again

I'm happy to put forth my 10mm S&W 610. Powerful, versatile (shoots .40SW also), and ideally sized N frame with 5" barrel. Love it.

Second favorite is my old 1917 S&W US military revolver, in .45acp.

Auto cartridges in revolvers? They have several ADVANTAGES! Utilizing the full-moon clip, the loaded clip drops smoothly into the cylinder, slicker and faster than any conventional revolver speed loader. Extraction is more sure than with conventional revolver cartridges, since all six empties eject in one smooth motion, without the inevitable cartridge snagging on ejection so common in conventional revolvers.

Oh, did I mention my SW 940 in 9MM? :)
