Finally broke down today and purchased some .22 LR.

No .22LR limit (Two-Three months ago) in Dick's, at a mall in Charlotte NC.

We were at the Doubletree Hotel, which touches the parking lot and I don't know the mall's name, but it has a Cheesecake Factory on the opposite side.

I've managed to stock up on mid-priced ammo through the internet. I'm really digging the Norma stuff for suppressor use. Also picked up some Federal Automatch from Cabela's but prefer Remington GB's. Still waiting to see bulk ammo at Walmart. Maybe I don't check enough, because I hate Walmart but I haven't seen any .22LR at our local stores in years. Checked yesterday and not a drop.

I made new year resolution of not shopping at Walmart. That was after I realized America was better place before there was Walmart in every town and "mini-Walmart" in every neighborhood. While I don't shoot .22lr I noticed LGS had plenty of suitable ammo. The Federal brand 325 count "dairy container" was $19.99 a piece with no limit. Much cheaper than Warmart and why one might ask? You know it will be there and you will not need to track anyone to help you plus wait about 20minutes to open the cabinet. Time is money.

I hate Walmart and have had that resolution for several years now and kept to it to the point of even ordering household items off Amazon. Unfortunately, there are a few things you can't get anywhere else, particularly when you need it right now. Cheap bulk .22LR is one of them. Of course, before the shortage, I was shooting five or six bulk packs a month. That said, I had just found a source to order t hem by the case that beat even Walmart. Then Sandy Hook.....

Yes I have bought 22 when I see it and will continue to do so if the price is right but I won't pay ridiculous prices!

you ever have issues with the automatch either 1) one box being super accurate and the other not. 2) some rounds sounding like there isn't enough powder? I purchased 4 packs of those a year ago for my savage mk2 and the first box was a tack driver and the 2nd box about every 10th round sounded like it was a CB and all over the paper.

I've had that exact issue, with one box being total crap and the next ok. Some boxes I'll have FTF's as high as 10%, which makes them worthless in a semi-auto. Accuracy is sub-par regardless of if the contents of the box reliably fire or not. Sure, it's plinking ammo but it shoots far worse than Goldenbullets and even give make Thunderbolts look like a reliable and accurate round. I still have 6 bricks left that I'll probably die owning, as I refuse to shoot them anymore.

Around here .22 has been available for close to a year. Cabela's always has a decent selection at good prices, and Dicks and Bass Pro and the smaller gun shops almost always have some Automatch or Golden Bullets in stock as well, they're just normally around $0.08-.09 a round.

The one place I've yet to see any is Walmart. I was told back in the thick of the shortage by employees that there'd be guys 30-40 deep waiting around the gun counter whenever a shipment would arrive. I suspect the same thing is going on still.

An update to my original post.
Stopped by my LGS today to pick up some bore brushes as I have been shooting a lot the past couple of weeks. I nosed around and was stunned to see 22 ammo on sale, There was a fair amount from most of the major mfs and prices were reasonable, after the silly prices we had till very recently.
He also had lots of 9mm on sale too. various brands and priced at $11 box. Same with all the powders, and primers, all back to reasonable prices and lots of inventory.
Had a quick chat with the owner and he said that business is quiet with fewer sales on everything. He did say that his sales over the past few years had been very high. He seems confident that sales will come back slowly and with the inventory situation, he feels that more people will get back to normal shooting.
This same LGS was really helpful during the time of scarcity and kept me supplied with plenty of reloading supplies at a reasonable price. I enjoy my LGS as they have looked after me well.
Support your LGS, get to know them well and hopefully if we go through another bad period they will keep you supplied like mine did.

Things are definitely getting better lately. This Fed Auto Match was $240 not long ago. Getting closer to "normal". Normal being around $150. Might not get back all the way, since it has been 8 plus years, and in general most things have gone up. Time will tell.

No limit at the local Academy or Gander Mountain.

During the height of the shortage, my father ran out of .22 LR. He called me and asked him to bring him some the next time I came to visit. I had a small stockpile and pulled a couple hundred rounds out and took to him, but I also took him several boxes of reloaded .223 Remington and told him to just make his Mini-14 his "go to gun" until the shortage eased because I could replace the .223 more easily than I could .22

It was during that time I discovered what a mess a 52 grain hollow point on top of 21 grains of IMR-4198 could make of an Armadillo, Muskrat and the like.

Prices won't be back to normal on .22lr until 550 packs of federal are back on the shelf at every Walmart in the country for under $19. That's less than $0.035 per round. That was the prepanic price and availability. We'll never see it though if people think 325rd boxes of automatch for $20, and 500rd bricks for $30 are good deals simply because the store has it

I don't think it is a matter of "just because the store has it" anymore. The current prices ...about $0.055/round...are the New Normal just based on increased Demand and a fixed Supply.

You may even see supplies shrink as manufacturers back off from the extra shifts they put on

You have to factor inflation into the mix. 22LR at $0.03/round is a thing of the past, I think. It's been a long time since 22LR has been common. I've only been able to buy some at an acceptable price just this year.

I do think prices will fall a bit more once the market is saturated, just not quite there yet.

Haven't shot much .22 for a while .Been testing loads for the AR. I have not seen much .22 but I also haven't been looking for it. I've only got 1200 rounds so if I see it I'll pick up some. It is time to start adding to the stock.

I was at WM a few days ago, and they had several different .22LR rounds available. They didn't have a lot, but that they have more than one brand is kind of a surprise. They also had about a half dozen different brands of 9mm available, with some Federal, I didn't look at it other than it was 115gr. for $9.78. I didn't need either one, so I left them for someone else. I have a LOT of .22lr.

Gun shops out here have plenty of .22, but it's still $40-50 for a brick of cheap stuff.
remember we were told by economic "experts" here about supply and demand and that prices were high on 22 ammo because the demand was more then the supply. now that supply is up and demand is down some guess what? the price is still high and never to go down to where it was. greed and chrony capitalism outweighs all economic theories. it is 40$ at dicks for rem thunderbolts

I have more faith in Supply/Demand than in greed...because greed pales when you have "dead money" tied up in stock. When supply isn't moving off the shelves, product gets discounted. Very few large corporations can afford to have their stock not turn over regularly.

Until that happens, Demand hasn't abated enough yet

I believe they are holding off on production to keep the price up so what ever gets out there and the hoarders are still hoarding what there is on the shelves. you will never see 22 discounted to pre panic days. as stated above wal mart tells them they want 22 at a certain price point and they will not sell it to them at a lower price. it has been what 7 years and counting

My daughter's boyfriend showed up for her birthday with a huge bouquet of roses for her and 600 rds of copper coated CCI for me.

I hope she marries him... ;)

Things are definitey getting better, got an Email from AIM Surplus they have Aguila .22lr for $250/5000 rounds (100 boxes) + shipping (~$25 for me). When I stocked up and by dumb luck took delivery of large order just before Sandy Hook it ran ~$225/5000 rounds + shipping.

Got my Email order confirmation from AIM, so have at it!

That would be Southpark Mall. Dick's has kept low prices all during the shortage. Less than $.07 a round, often $.065, and sometimes $.055. I've bought Federal 325s and Remington Golden Bullet whenever they had it. Also Academy online and BassPro when they'd get a large shipment.. I've acquired about 4K rounds during the shortage and tend to shoot my CC .45 ACP more to keep in practice so I only shoot 100 rounds an outing.
