Follow up to rusty m&p 40

Furthermore, this is one of the most heavily visited gunforums in the world, if I saw this thread and I was an S&W rep, forking up $500 for a new gun is alot cheaper than this kind of poor publicitiy.
I've been watching this thread since it started, since the M&P was my next intended purchase. It's evident that a problem exists. I most certainly will not consider this product until such time S&W corrects it, and announces that it's no longer a concern. I'm sure they will, but until then, no M&P for me. Thank you THR!

I've never heard of a properly maintained modern semiauto rusting. What do Glock, CZ, HK know that S&W doesn't???

Looks like S&W has some QC problems with the M&P. Mine came with the front sight off center and shot low and left. My experience was they fixed the problem rapidly (Sent by Fedex on Wednesday and returned by UPS the next Wednesday). Problem fixed. No muss, no fuss. I thought they had some early production problems they were rapidly fixing.

I haven't seen any rust, but I clean the pistol and wipe it down with an oiled cloth.

what's with the Freebies? I've read about extra mags, no replacement night sights. Wow. I just got my pistol fixed, competently and quickly. But, that's all I wanted to begin with.

I agree with you, Jeff, and most everyone else in that they should have never sent the gun back with any amount of rust on it (especially considering it's basically a brand new gun).

Also, I don't know why their "customer satisfaction" techniques vary so widely. In your case, it appears that they returned the gun after simply replacing the slide. Not that one should expect any more than that, but it's odd that some people receive free mags and/or night sights when their guns are returned and others get nothing at all (and in your case, receive the gun in a state that isn't even "factory fresh").

Don't get me wrong, I applaud S&W for standing behind the gun and attempting to remedy the problem, but buying the gun and then having to be without it for several days would be an inconvenience at best and I think the least they could do is send a free mag for the trouble. It would be a kind gesture on their part that would help ensure that you're a satisfied customer that continues to purchase products from the company.

"The M&P is actually an American refinement of the Taurus 24/7 which has been around for a couple years longer than the Smith and has a reputation as a problem gun too."

I don't know where you got that idea but it is incorrect.

I feel sooooo lucky , I got one of the early production ones , so far not a hiccup in nearly 18 months of ownership . No mag problems , not rust issues , no FTF ...and as for that darn mag safety thing , a few minutes perusing Burwells site and 3 minutes with tools at my computer desk , no more mag safety .

Even my Taurus hasn't rusted like that (no it isn't pot metal)... and it has resided quite a bit in my gym bag with sweaty stinky workout clothes...

jamesr, It sucks that S&W is giving you the run around...

Wonder if you could find some stainless roll pins, darken them and then replace them yourself...

If this is a big issue, anyone that is experiencing this needs to write to S&W and complain, they will probably not do anything until there are a lot of complaints I guess...

The NEXT day, there was a semi-circle of rust where she had touched it and the blade still had some residual factory oil on it (it was new). A light stain from that rust is still on that blade to this day. That was some kind of acidic touch.

and thats why the men in my family do not touch metal on guns we do not intend to buy. my father could turn a fine blued barrel into a rusty finger painting in a few hours. while iv never experienced my own "acidity" in this manner. i dont touch the shiney things unless i have intention/interest to buy

Oops - minor correction. I got curious and just looked for the knife I mentioned above since reading this and the stain is not still there after all. There is a slight place where I cleaned it off, but the original stain is not still there.

Guess my memory was a little stained...

I have had an M&P .40 since May 07 and live in Virginia with 90 degrees and 90% humidity all summer long and have not had any rust issue so far. I have wiped it down with an oil cloth, but I do that with all of my guns. I use it for carry some times and have put 900 rounds through it with out a problem. I wonder if they did not scratch the finish putting the pins in?

I have a 40c (and a 9c before that) and I carry every day and I'm a big person and sweat a lot, I have not seen any rust on mine. I agree, cann S&W and ask for a supervisor. Maybe not to get a new firearm but to get your's fixed correctly.

I've been watching this thread since it started, since the M&P was my next intended purchase. It's evident that a problem exists.

And for an even longer time, I've carried my M&P40 in and out of the weather, and there's been not indication of rust at all. Once a week, if it doesn't get to the range, it gets wiped down. Sometimes I'll even wipe it down with G96 (if it looks dirty).

I'd have to counter that it's not evident to me that a problem exists. I'll pick up another M&P if the opportunity arises.

If you're waiting evidence of a gun's "problem status" to be resolved on the internet, you'll never buy a gun ever again.

LOL. These could be the truest words I've read on the "internets."

Hola from a fellow H'villian.

I'd love to hear S&W's explanation.

I got transferred to Jeff in customer service. He said my original slide was not finished properly from factory. He said the finish is done by salt bathing the slide, and when done incorrectly it will rust fast and can not be stopped. But if done right should not rust from water, sweat, or anything I did. He is sending another prepaid label to send the gun back in for the other items to be replaced. He said they should have never shipped it back with those items still having rust on them.
