S&W M&P 40 Slide rust

I purchased the M&P partly due to their advertised stainless slide. I discovered rust and pitting on the slide. Has anyone experienced this? Does S&W warranty this sort of damage?

Stainless steel can & will corrode.
The conditions must be right for the corrosion to set in.
Where was the pistol carried?
On an offshore patrol boat?
R U sure it is stainless?
That slide looks blued.

Its carried IWB and while hunting as back up firearm. I live near the coast. The slide says stainless. But it's also blued.

S&W will warranty the weapon just give them a call. Also understand even though the slide is stainless it is coated in tenifer which is a rust resistant coating and not rust proof. all guns will rust if u put them in right environment even glocks rust just give s&w a call theyll fix it for you.

I'd just brush the area with a brass (or stainless steel) brush dampened with a little gun oil or preservative, wipe it off and move on. Hardly seems worth worrying about.

I wipe down all my gun with an "oily rag" regardless of finish or alloy. Quick, easy and I don't recall the last time I had any rust living here in the humid Southeast..

It is a working gun, not a showpiece. I see no problem here. Any gun that is used is going to show wear, and normal wear is what I see there. If you expect it to be pristine keep it in the box and don't use it.

I have not had any rust issues but I have noticed my M&P finish wears pretty quick.

Stainless will rust. Any gun that is used will develop "scars" over time. Unless you are looking for a safe queen I wouldn't worry about it.

Unless it's seriously corroded, do NOT do this, you'll just screw it all up.
If you're going to try something more abrasive than just an oiled cloth, try some very fine 0000 steel wool and some oil. This can remove light rust without gouging up everything around it.

Tenifer isn't actually a "coating" like Duracoat and others, it's a 'treatment' that alters the surface of the metal, just like melonite and Sig's Nitron

Naaw ... been doing it off and on for over 50 years. The worst that can happen is you get a bit of surface brass on the slide and that can be wiped off with your thumb or a coarse cloth. It's no worse than using that same bore brush on the bore of a stainless steel barrel.

Stainless is really just an alloy that is less likely to stain "IE rust". Doesn't mean it won't rust or that nasty environments don't cause issues. If it's cosmetic, I'd clean it and lube it. If it looks like it may cause function issues, I'd call S&W.

Most of what I have read says that if you are going to do a QPQ nitriding then you are better off with regular steel. I am not sure why S&W and SIG are using stainless steel if they are going to nitride them.
