I was wondering if anyone else has had problems with the slides on their M&Ps rusting. I have a M&P .40 that I carry daily ccw in an inside the waist holster. In only two weeks after purchasing the pistol I noticed a large amout of rust starting to form at the front of the slide. I contacted S&W and they replaced the slide free of charge. I have now carried it for about a month since getting it back and it is already starting to rust again. I would be more suspecting of the holster if it wasnt for the fact that for an entire year previous to carrying my M&P I had an XD that I carried in the same exact holster without so much as one spec of rust forming. Can anyone give me some advice on what is reasonable for me to expect S&W to do in order to rectify the problem or any other advice on my situation. Thanks in advance.

There was another thread where this happened to a member, but I can't remember if it was on here or TFL. A quick search should provide more info. :)

Hmm.... There have been a few(at least one I can think of for sure) people who have complained about the M&P rusting no matter what Smith did. One guy sent his in three times, and had the slide changed at least once. The general consensus was that some people have a very acidic chemistry that just does not go with the M&P's metallurgy.

It could possibly be something you're doing, though you might think whatever it is isn't the issue. If you could tell us the following items, maybe we can link some things together:

-Your usual methods of cleaning and lubrication. products and how thorough (do you make sure you oil the slide serrations thoroughly, etc)
-Make and material of holster
-Common carry environent
-What types of ammo you shoot, both in the M&P and in any other guns you shoot alongside it at the range. (any old or mil-surp ammo that might be corrosive?)

While I can believe the slide you purchased may have been in a batch that had bad metal treatment, I would expect Smith to replace it with a newer slide that is confirmed okay, though I don't rule out the possibility of another bad one. These are extremely rare happen-stance. On the MP-pistol.com forums there is always speculation going on about repeated issues. I'm just trying to factor in anything that might be a possible cause from your end.
