For giggles I went to Gunbroker and looked up 22 ammo.

[QUOTEI thought I'd never see the day .22 ammo would be cleared out. ][/QUOTE]

It was back in 2009. The only difference between now and then is that people are paying exhorbitant prices for it.

I've got several bricks of 500 22LR I had sealed in ammo boxes and checked a few bricks of brand name and all was under $10 a brick sticker wise.

I stopped by Dicks and Walmart. Of course there was no 22LR. I asked about it. The Dicks store said they get about a case a week of 22LR and sometimes a case of bulk packs of some kind. They were limiting sales to one brick or bulk pack per customer, but at least their prices were their normal prices. So, to get some, be there when the truck rolls in.... same goes for Walmart. Be there when the first put it on the shelves and buy some. Otherwise, you are probably looking at paying very high prices or not being able to buy at all.

I thought I'd never see the day .22 ammo would be cleared out.

That happened 4 years ago and supplies started coming back by late spring. As mentioned above, the difference this time is pricing being outragious by private sellers.

I started buying at least 500 rounds every trip to Walmart and that was at least once a week. It builds up unless you are really shooting a lot.

Conspiracy theory of the day:

I think this all could be working out as designed. Obama knows he does not have to pass any NEW laws to have gun control. Obamacare will work fine for that. However, he also knows that people assume he wants to ban most, if not all guns. If he combines that fear with openly talking about how he wants to do just that, then he can create a buying frenzy so fierce that the majority of all gun dealers sell out of nearly anything desirable and profitable and their ability to make money disappears. These dealers are not going to be able to hold out indefinitely, waiting for new guns and ammo to come in. If it goes on long enough, many dealers will go out of business.

Now, when you combine an ammo buying frenzy among the civilian population with the US gov't coincidentally ordering massive amounts of ammo, you have the prospect of an unending ammo shortage, so dealers can't even count on ammo sales, not to mention this will severely limit the civilians ability to purchase large amounts of ammo, or any amount of ammo as the case seems to be.

I too have never seen things get to the point that .22 is impossible to find and it is really irritating me, considering I have purchased or otherwise acquired four .22 handguns recently. I really want to go shooting but then, a guy has to wonder, what if the supply never returns? Or at least, how long until the supply does return?

Interesting times.

The ammo run didn't start last week. It has been going on since Thanksgiving weekend. It just took about a month for supplies to be depleted from retail stores. Things started ramping up right after the presidential election.

The scary part is that supposedly all the manufacturers are running ammo 24 /7 - but WHERE IS IT??? I know there sure isn't any here in stores or anywhere online except gunbroker....

Thats what I'd like to know. If all of the companys are running at full tilt, where is the stuff like presses, dies, bullets? Seems like someone should have something in stock once in a while. Glad I'm stocked.

It's more people buying then you are realizing.

Seriously if you're looking it's out there for not terrible prices. Sure it's more, but not even double on most. It's just going in minutes online.

I have the benefit of being able to be online almost all day. I get the email alerts if things are back in stock and I use aggregators to check others. TODAY I was over 120 bricks of .22lr go in 30 minutes at sgammo for $35. That was subsonic (won't cycle a semi) and a 4 brick limit.

If you want to get stuff in person ask the clerks when they get shipments. I know pretty well now when Walmart gets in its ammo. I show up and grab my 3 boxes and it's something...

The administration's grand plan to make sure no one has guns or ammo involves getting everyone to buy guns and ammo? Wouldn't that be like if Prohibitionists decided to make the country dry by convincing everyone to have one massive drinking binge?

to be fair: assuming you have ZERO ammo and still really want to go shooting at the range.... $10 for 100rds of .22LR is still much, much cheaper than spending (in current prices) $40 for 100rds of 9mm or $1 / rd for .223 .....

surely .22LR is crazy overpriced right now.... but it's still the cheapest available round (if you can find it).

I just looked again and am seriously considering putting 5k rounds of .22 on Gunbroker. I am seeing Blazer ammo in 5k lots being bid up to $650 and I paid less than $200.

Man if only I had bought a million rounds 6 months ago.

You wouldn't be willing to mail about 55 rounds to me for a modest profit, would you?
