This is just a "for what it's worth" thread.
I own 3 Kahr.40cals, an NAA .380, a Kahr 9mm, a S&W .38spl, a Glock.357sig and a 23 year old Ruger MKII Target with the 7" barrel. I go through the safe about once a month and clean and polish those that I don't carry. Saturday I popped open the box on the old Ruger, and I thought "what a beautiful old gun she is" then I realized that I hadn't shot her or any other .22cal in over 5 years. Jumped in the truck went to Wally World bought a box of 550 Federal .22LR's for $8.65 (can't beat that) and took old Ruger to my indoor range. What a blast, I forgot how much I enjoyed shootin' that old .22. No sore hand from recoil no empty bill fold from buying ammo just a lot of fun. The adjustable sights were still true and at 25 yards, resting my elbow on the bench, I can still make one ragged hole with a mag of 10 rounds. I had all the good 'ol boys coming round wantin' to try her out and they too had a good time. That was so much fun that today I went and got another box of 550 (for $8.65) and headed back to the range. This time I took my Grandson and his Henry Lever Action .22LR and old Ruger. What a great gun that Henry is, I bought it for his 13th birthday at Wally World for $187.00. The two of us had a blast and we're gonna keep doing it till the novelty wears off.
My point to all this is simple, you don't have to spend a pile of money on macho hardware (I'm guilty), if you have 8 bucks in your pocket and an old .22 laying around, clean her up and take her to the range, maybe you too have forgotten how much fun a .22 can be.---------Jed

KK ... never a truer word!! Sometimes too easy to forget the sheer joy of .22 shooting.

My 22/45 gets way too little excercise .. but is a treat to shoot when I do get to it. Even blasting with my cheapie HP-22 is fun ... way too easy to empty a magfull or several!

Best of all tho usually is the Marlin 60 ... always take that to the range regardless .... run off mag after mag of 15 rounds .. never gets tedious at all!:p

Sometimes I get more serious and shoot (try) bullseye with Single Six .. or as i can now do .. try same with a pre K-22 I recently got .... and as for value well ..... it does not really hurt the pocket book at all does it!

Most grin for the Buck!:D

Never forget your .22's.

You know, I hate to admit this and I am not bragging, but I have so many guns that I sometimes forget about one of them. I was sitting here a couple weeks ago and noticed a rifle case leaning against the wall. I have a bunch of rifle cases leaning against the wall, but none of them contain a rifle (they are in the safe) but this one obviously did. I walked over and opened it up. There was my Winchester 9422. I looked at it and realized that I had forgotten how beautiful it looked. I did the same thing you did only I already had the ammo. I immediately drove out to the desert and ran 300-400 rounds through it and had a great time.
I came home and was going to start a thread just like this one but figured no one would care. About how much fun a .22 is and how I get so caught up in practicing defensive type shooting and practicing for hunting, or practicing for some competition or gun school that I forget how much fun it is to just lean against the tailgate of my truck and plink.
Now that I think about it, it was a Sunday morning. I tuned the satillite radio in my truck to Tom Greshams Gun Talk radio program, turned it up so I could hear it, set out one of those metal spinner targets and spent a great morning.

We were doing the same thing last weekend. My son and son in law were playing with their .22's out back shooting at pepper poppers.

Did you know if you have a popper set to drop with one .45 acp it will drop with about five fast hits from a .22? Using a timer, both guys were able to empty a 10 round mag in just under three seconds. My son was able to put 9 or 10 hits on a popper, sometimes dropping two with a mag. My son in law, a newbie, was putting about half of the rounds on a popper. This was at about 15 yards.

.22 pistols are great fun ;) . Me, BamBam-31, and another buddy went to a local shooting range last week and they have steel targets for pistols at 35, 50, 60, and 100 yards :D . BamBam-31 brought, among others, his 22/45 with a red dot and I had my CZ75B compact with a .22lr Kadet Kit. Other buddy has a Glock in .40 (don't know the model number). BamBam-31 and I were hitting everything in sight, even the 100 yard targets :D . I didn't even know I could hit something at 100 yards with a .22lr from a pistol  . I used that cheapo Remington gold bullet stuff that comes 550 rounds packed loose because I like the feeling of just grabbing more ammo out of the box like it's candy  instead of dealing with those pesky dividers. We let our other buddy try a few mags full to share in the fun and two days later he goes out and buys his own 22/45 :D . In addition to the fun, it's a great practice tool and confidence builder ;) .

Never miss a chance to go plinking with a .22lr. I try to tell new shooters to hold on to their .22's as one day they will remember how much fun it is to shoot them. Sadly a lot dump them as soon as they get a centerfire, but time will one day tell them of their grievious mistake.
Everyone needs at least one good .22lr firearm for training, correcting mistakes, or just plain having fun. A brick of .22lr is about the cheapest price you can pay for a days worth of grinning.

Beetle .. would you happen to know what mounts he has for that ... and how fixed. I have not looked into any mods on my 22/45 but really do fancy a red dot .... if no major mods to make.

IIRC they are called "So-Low" (because they mount so low ;) ) or something like that. He just did some research and bought the mount and red dot and put it on himself, made it sound pretty easy. Also said it would work for a Mk II (the Ruger .22 that looks like a Luger). I'll let him know about this thread, so you can get the info straight from him ;) .

That red dot is great, also too easy to use :D . If you flinch or anything, you can see the red dot moving around, so the instant feed-back is good for a rookie like me. Once the red dot is zeroed, you can't miss unless the thing you are aiming at is smaller than the dot ;) .

Thx for comin back on that Beetle ... :)

Yeah if he can give exact info it'd be real useful. There are a lot of conversions out there .. maybe a B-Square will do the trick. I have ''red-dotted'' so many of my guns now .. old eyes and all that ... but does appeal to me to go the red dot route on a .22 ...... sure as heck works on my hand cannons!!

If it is a Sig line they sure stole it from .22lr shooters. Since .22lr been bringin smiles to faces for many decades.

We were having dinner the other night with two couples. One lady said she had a 9mm SW she needed to shoot! She said she was looking for a 44 magnum or larger. She was openly contemptuous of the idea of a .22

My friend and I took her to the range Sunday before the game. She wondered what in the world I was bringing a 10/22 along for.

She has had some firearms training, but not much. We got her set up and ran through the safety stuff. Helped her load and watched real close to see how she was going about things. When it was time to shoot, she screwed up her eyes, turned her head away from down range and started to squeeze one off!!! I got her to at least look down range while shooting two clips.

I got out the Ruger MKII, showed her how to load the mags and the gun. She started shooting. We left her alone to shoot for a while. After about 200 rounds she got back into the 9mm. She tried a couple of the other guns, and really liked my Sig Stainless Stock. She went back to the Ruger MkII.

I broke out the 10/22 and showed her how to load the mags and the gun. She was wondering why we had it out. I set her up on the bench sitting down and told her to fire away at out targets at 25yds. She shot the rest of the .22's. We couldn't get her to stop. I didn't get home until half time, and decided not to watch that. Oh well.

She called tonight to tell me she had her own brick of .22 and was looking at a stainles Ruger MkII with bull barrel. Her next gun will not be a .44 magnum.

P95Carry,

My Ruger 22/45 w/ 5.5" barrel has an Ultradot 30mm red dot scope mounted on it with SoLow scope mounts, found here: www.solow.com. They're $40 and come with everything you need to mount it on your Ruger 22/45 or Mk. II. The website can describe it better than I can.

I think they're great, and a lot of older gents come up to me to ask me what my setup is because their eye's aren't quite as sharp as they used to be and they're looking for a red dot.

The scope I bought from Larry's guns for $135, I think. Plus $40 for mounts, plus $200 for 22/45 = $375 total. Best grin for you buck, definitely.

:D

(Majic, I think he meant a signature line, not a Sigarms or Sig-Sauer line. ;) )

Even my wife likes shooting the .22

My wife bought me a Beretta NEOS .22LR for Christmas and she generally dislikes ALL guns. However, I let her shoot several clips in the NEOS and she pronounced it FUN. Folks, that is a miracle.

This NEOS, with the extended barrel and a decent scope will be death to all varmints. The only limitations the gun has are the feeble eyes of the shooter (dat would be me)

A big fat "AMEN" to the pleasures of shooting the .22 round and, after all, I am the "22luvr."

Best Wishes

That Solow mount looks like a god idea. It's a shame I don't have a Ruger .22lr to try it on. I had one many years ago and really didn't care for it. Shot several of the ones owned by my friends over the years and still didn't warm up to them. Now here yall folks come with all these ideas for them and i'm really....:banghead: ....starting......:banghead: ....to dislike...:banghead:.....yall....more......:banghead: ......and more.

Interesting thread -- I just went out to turn the horses out (I feed them every morning in their stalls) and took my M1927 Argentine with the Colt Ace Conversion kit and practiced some double-taps from the holster.

With Wally World selling 550 rounds for under $9 bucks, and no brass to hunt for afterwards, it's surprising how much fun a .22 can be -- even for serious practice.:p

I bought a MkII about a month ago. It's one of the 2004 models that come drilled & tapped with an included weaver base so I just had to put an UltraDotFour on it. What a blast! Like KahrKarrier, it had been a long time since I'd fooled around with a rimfire but now I'm going to make it a habit to bring this gun to the range. Can't beat 500 rounds for less than 10 bucks.

I always bring at least one .22 with me when I go to the range. Either a Ruger MK II or 22/45 or Kadet Kit and/or Benelli. I do reload centerfire rounds, but I still find I shoot a lot of .22. When I go to the rifle range, out comes the 10/22! They are just a blast and cheap to shoot!

I love shooting my .22's also. I always bring 500 or more rounds with me and I usually use them all. Cheap and great fun to shoot. I have 3 pistols and 5 rifles for .22 and I use them all. I love to rapid fire them. Fun to waste rounds when they don't cost much!

I alway's bring at least one .22 Lr to the range...between my 2 sons and me we have collected 13 of them (you can't have too many .22s!). One just leads to another.

I particularly like shooting flies off of targets with the NS522 on the few warm, summer afternoons we get around here...almost peaceful.

My buddy and I have been in a $ race lately buying more and more handguns. Last time we were at the range we decided that we needed to do more .22 shooting. We decided that every other time we go to the range we are going to bring only .22s, we will save on ammo and have a ton of fun.

Kahr Karrier,
YOu're absolutely right about 22s!! I usually keep at least one in my range bag. When I'm all done with the centefire, I'll break out the 22 and blast away. The club I go to leaves photocopied targets in the indoor range.

Federals and Remington Golden Bullet bricks go for $9.50 here including tax. If I can hit a good sale at a sporting good store, the price drops a buck or two.

A box of clays for $4 and a brick of 22lr sure leads to a day of cheap fun.

Dangit. This thread has convinced me that I need another .22 pistol. I have an Iver Johnson Target Sealed 8 that my father-in-law gave me for Christmas. I have been really wanting a ruger .22. Either a 22/45 or a Mark II. I don't know. Maybe in a few months. :D
