Frustrated by Cabela’s & BassPro’s Faulty Website Primer Inventory?

So, per the mention on the where are they in sale thread, i called bps and inquired about the federal small match primers that said available Dec 15-18th. 15 Min hold, 15 min call time.

I was told they would be backordered for me and am email generated upon shipment. I ordered five bricks. No shipping or hazmat due to ship to store. $242 total taxed for 5k.

I may or may not get them but it was encouraging to even allow a backorder.

I have a retired LEO down the road who has bought about 4k of primers from me since the pandemic. I've got him good on all but small pistol primers. 2k for him and 3k for me would be a great deal regardless of time.

Bps said they would maintain my backorder for 60 days before canceling if the product doesn't arrive
Interesting...following your lead, I just called cabelas and they wouldn’t take a back order. Put it on wish list was their advice.

just tried wish list and it doesn’t work for anything but CCI and Federal regular. In fact drop down for match primers only has rifle, not pistol. Tried bass pro, same thing.

The SA BPS "theoretically" moved them from store shelving accessible to anyone to locked drawers at the knife counter (should primers actually be physically present) a while back. The shelf tags were removed and the shelving reconfigured.

ETA: Ive NEVER seen a store employee manning the knife counter, so I consider that sign an inside ironic joke in more than one dimension.
Then to try and find and employee to check for you. Lol.

Just an FYI, I ran across this that I think is probably an "official" update to BPS & Cabela's posted policies. While I would substitute the word "ainaccurate" for the word "unavailable" it speaks to what some, if not most, of us posting something helpful have experienced firsthand. Color emphasis mine for clarity, and IME extends to reloading component primers (Due to High Demand). To wit:

What products will not be available from the online inventory?
  • Some Boats, Trailers, ATVs, UTVs, Firearms and Rimfire Ammunition (Due to High Demand) or clearance items may be unavailable for checking in-store availability.
https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/hodgdon-varget-rifle-powders

The only real way to find out if components exist available for purchase t any point is to check firsthand and may include need for direct assistance of a store employee such as checking the locked drawers at the knife counter of the San Antonio Texas BPS for primers per the in-store sign regarding primer location.

And there's this for backorders, timely based on some recent post in where components are available thread. I'm among those who have experienced this on plain orders that weren't backorders (up frontorders?) in 2020, at least as far as I was aware when I made orders that were subsequently canceled without my request.

One interesting thing to me is the inconsistency between information found on Cabela’s & BassPro’s websites. In many respects BassPro has much more comprehensive information on the FAQ/Help areas, but it’s not always consistent with Cabela’s actual practices.

They obviously haven’t completed the integration of the two and it’s more than simply cosmetic.

Tracking ship to store is but one simple example. I have always used Cabela’s and have always been able to track ship to store and always through FedEx. BassPro on the other hand has an FAQ saying one cannot track ship to store items. Clearly the corporate policies were (and still are) different.

I also am curious if they have consolidated the customer service departments. I doubt it. I always call Cabela’s and thus get Cabela’s policies such as we don’t take back orders on primers, add it to your wish list instead. But elsewhere on this thread, one of our brethren reported a BassPro customer service rep actually placed a back order for him.

I won't sign their logsheet that shows I picked up my orders until after the employee at the online purchases counter opens the box or boxes and every item on my order is verified and placed in a bag. Then I leave the counter and store with my bag of items I purchased online. I don't consider that as holding up the line, just IMO. I don't really consider doing this as holding up the line. If there's a discrepancy I want it to be revealed there at the counter and by having the counter employee opening the boxes and transferring all the items to a bag there's no question about me pulling any sort of shenanigans if a discrepancy is discovered. With the online orders counter at the San Antonio also serving as the returns counter there's been plenty of customers with item returns that take longer to resolve than unboxing my items, cross checking, and transfer to a bag. I'm never unhappy waiting for them to complete their business at the counter, everybody gets their turn and it takes whatever time it takes for them to resolve whatever they got in that line.
I make them open my boxes too.

I've had my frustrations like many of you, but they come through more times than not. Ordered 11/27, received yesterday.

Mine work 95% of the time. I suspect it may be because I live in Phoenix. It's a hub for all kinds of things. I've only had one cancelled order.

On a side note, I noticed that they had stockpiled primers in the stores, off the shelf, for black friday, in order to get people in the stores. They all showed available in the stores only, for about 2 days. Maybe this will happen again on another shopping period.

You’re fortunate. Since September 23 I’ve ordered primers five times. Three were canceled outright, one was delivered but without advance notice was reduced to just three sleeves vs the five bricks ordered, and the fifth is scheduled to arrive Tuesday. Before September I had much better fortune.

correction 6 times I’ve ordered and once I received as ordered. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.

I've definetely been lucky. One of my orders of 4k spp got lost in the fedex facility. Two weeks after the package disappearing, I walked into a local reloading supply store, and saw that they SPP, limit 1k. I told the owner my story just un casual conversation, and that I bet someone stole them, or stashed in them in the facility to grab later.
Next thing I know, he comes out of the back with 5k! I bought them all. A few days later, I get the package from fedex. I have a feeling the investigation they did found my package somehow. Fedex did take it very seriously, I told them what I thought could've happened.

And to ensure good future karma, I called cabelas and told them I got the package, cancel the refund. They never would've known, as on the initial shipment, tgey screwed up the paperwork for fedex, and fedex returned them back to cabelas that day. Therefore cabelas had no tracking numbers. They reshipped them using the old tracking numbers, which were invalid. I thought about not calling for a second, because cabelas charged me $90 per thousand, the next week the price was $70. But I don't live my life being dishonest, maybe that's why things turned out the way they did.

my question is are you low on primers and only realizing it now? Or are you just wanting to buy because of a panic?
Do you burn through 2000 primers a month?
Maybe slow down your rate of expenditure until better times.
I like buying them when they are cheap not when they are expensive.

- Just started reloading
- They won't be cheap for a long time
- Dems will look to restrict anything that will stick

Now this is funny; Just received an email notice from BPS titled," According to your recent purchase, you should check this out!". It then lists the whole gamete of CCI primers and takes you to their web page, only when you click on any one of them they are all listed as completely out of stock including ship to store.

Now I immediately went thru it as soon as I got the email and from the looks of it they never had any. What a joke!!!!

Depending on whom you are asking, I like buying cheap too, but they’re not cheap and I like shooting a lot.

Shooting is my primary, almost only, outside the home hobby since the pandemic. And, since I shoot only reloaded ammo, I need components.

I’m not constrained by cost, only availability. I buy what I want, pay what I must, whenever I can find it. (And I give or sell to my son and neighbor friend at my cost.). Overall while I don’t typically shoot 2000/month, it’s not at all unheard of.

Years ago, I bought Sunoco 260 103 octane leaded fuel for about .30/gallon. Now it’s equivalent is over $5.00. Prepandemic, I was buying as much as I wanted.

Cabela's website is now showing the 'Add to Cart' button randomly lit up on a lot of ammo, primers and powder. When I click on it, it then says '0 in stock, not added to cart'. This makes it doubly difficult and frustrating to find what actually may be in stock.

All of this for me too.

Looking forward,
If I were in a similar situation, I would stock up for about 2yrs. worth as that seems to be about how long these droughts can last. At $40 a box pre pandemic for 1000 primers that is a total of $960 plus tax and shipping. 2 yrs worth. at 1000 primers a month.
I currently have about 10 years worth for my needs.

I don’t have nearly that much but I’m good for a while.

I only started loading September 2019 and accumulated quite a bit as I was learning and trying to find powders I like, etc.

A long time reloader I bought supplies from at gun shows advised me to buy more than you’ll ever think you’ll need because you’ll need it. He was right and thankfully, I did.

For whatever reason, they're not showing where I can add them to my cart:thumbup:, nor when I checked around 3:30 AM CST after seeing your earlier post. I hope you & others are having success with this and it's just something at my end.

Yea.. the availability seems to have a regional thing to it. I was able to add 10 to cart, which I removed, before posting the second time on the where are they thread.

Place order for same item dec 12. Still in process, hope this means mine will eventually process.

Ordered cci large magnum pistol primers on the 12th and show shipped to store today. Still waiting for delivery but every time I've made it to shipped they have arrived. That 44mag bullet mold can't come soon enough

Good for you and good luck. Let me tell you my last experience (last week)...I thought I was getting 10 sleeves of same thing (large pistol magnum) and when I opened the box at the customer service desk it was empty! I have little confidence may latest order will be fulfilled.

They shipped an empty box or they stole it at the store?

My order placed November 27 for 800 CCI #500 Small Pistol Primers that shipped on a Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's owned / operated truck with a tracking number that provides zero value to me as a customer as well as Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's Customer Service employees never showed any further info after transitioning from "Processing" to "Shipped" on December 2. I had a digital "chat" session on December 10 due to lack of further info and my order was confirmed to have been shipped on December 2 from a distribution center in St. Louis MO. I was advised to keep waiting for an email from the store when it arrives. I started an email inquiry on December 13 and was given the same advice plus informationthat proved to be completely erroneous later as well as a bunch of also erroneous speculation. I phoned yesterday and after an hour of the same speculation I was transferred to a CS supervisor who confirmed tracking numbers assigned to orders shipped on Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's owned / operated trucks are as worthless to their CS departmentas they are to customers. The supervisor phoned the San Antonio store, who informed her they were too busy to check whether my order had ever arrived.

I did receive notice another order, placed on December 7 for a 1 lb container of IMR-4350 shipped via FedEx had arrived, so I went to BPS and gave both order numbers. They were also lacking any further info on my order placed November 27 other than it had shipped on a company owned / operated truck in St. Louis MO on December 2. However after returning from that shadowy area always referred to as "The Back", two boxes were brougt to the online orders counter, my 1 lb container of IMR-4350 and my 800 CCI #500 Small Pistol Primers. The explanation given was nobody at the San Antonio store ever checked in the box with primers, and paperwork showed that box was delivered on December 6. If I had (stupidly) kept silent waiting for email confirmation that order had arrived, that box would have been transferred to store stock on December 20, 14 days after delivery to the store, and my payment would have been refunded.

Yet another case of it being wise to not be passive, and instead be persistent if there's anything suspect WRT an online order purchase made through the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's websites.
