...when I was younger(20+yrs ago) I didn't give the M1 too much thought but thought I would like the AR or nothing....then a few years back, I began toying with the M1 and have since ignored the AR-types in a gun shop..now I have bought an M1(was stolen later)..and have now replaced it with another one(coming soon)...I have not owned an AR but have shot both, the AR quite a bit..my first experience shooting an AR was anti-climatic(ho-hum) but the first time shooting an M1 was pure-shooting recreation....I had a similar experience with the 1911...the M1 carbine was also enjoyable (my nephew really got a kick out of it)..anyone else have similar experiences..?

fond remembrance

When I had my first eight weeks of infantry training, followed by another eight weeks of advanced infantry training, it was all done with the M14 rifle.
Similar to the M1, if you are familiar with it.

Later, during my duty with the paratroopers, I trained with the "AR." The M16; and used it in combat also.

I never "got over" the M14, and much prefer it today, many years later.

Interesting you would bring that up. When I was in the Army I trained a lot with the M16 and had tremendous respect for it. I had never shot a M1 until yesterday. One of the member’s of my IDPA club had a special Veteran’s Day surprise for us. He brought his antique M1 and an AR15. We shot both. What a blast. I had not shot an AR in over 16 years. The M1 was incredible. I loved it. I hope to have one someday.

I'm just the opposite. I bought into the "7.62" hype and went big from the get go. My first autoloading EBR was a Polytech M14. Fun gun, but it's muzzle heavy, long, and horrible for CQB work. For me, being of smallish stature, it was a big pig.

I resisted AR's for a long time, but as I've gotten into them I find them to be infinately adaptable and useful, and a carbine 7.62x51 AR will do for me what the M1 does, with better ergos and modularity....and lighter weight.

Little from column a little from column b

It's kinda hard to say, back when I was 12 I think, I got my first M1 (carbine) I loved it, but ammo was expensive. A few years later after saving my quarters I got an AR-15. A few years after that I got an M1. I not too long ago purchased an M-1A. I shoot all of them, rather frequently. But today was bolt gun day, so I didn't shoot any of them. I have a tremendus amount of respect for the M1, and the M1A, they are great firearms.

I think if it really came down to "which one would you choose" I would probably take my M4gerie over any of the others. Pretty much due to the fact that the ammo is lighter, cheaper, and the gun is lighter.

Aside from that, I love them all. I definately think the M-1A sight is a cut above the others.

Tell me about it!

I'm up to my elbows in an 1898 U.S. Krag restoration, and I'm already hankering for a nice Trapdoor Springfield to add to the collection. :D

When I first got into shooting, I thought SKSs were the shiznit. I bought another one and thousands of rounds of ammo. Now there rarely leave the safe.

Anymore, I shoot my AR for scores and my M1 for fun. I'm thinking of selling off some other guns... SKSs and Mosin Nagants mostly and putting the proceeds toward a NM M1. Then I'll shoot an M1 for scores too.
