Do you think that the future of the CMP may be in jeopardy under the new administration? I feel that the program is still around because it flies very low under the radar and most non shooters have never heard of it. Can you imagine what the reaction will be when they(the new admin.) finds out that the Government has been selling battle rifles to civilians for decades!! And that the ammunition that these fire will go though body armor (OK, most rifle ammo will do that anyway), so these will now be called cop killer battle rifles to frighten the public. Just to be safe I just placed an order for another CKBR, besides it takes three to use the stacking lugs. :)

Just a thought.

My CMP Garand arrived today. I had need to call them last week on a billing matter. I asked if there has been any word within the organization about changes under Obama and was told no. I was, however, speaking with sales and billing clerks who may well be among the last to know.

One thing I did believe, though, is that CMP has been swamped through all of their sales channels, mail order, online, and in their stores. I apparently, and if there are no more changes to my order, will receive ammunition that has yet to be displayed on the web site.

why offer the guns for sale to the public when you can destroy them at taxpayer expense ?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Clinton tried to kill the CMP completely while he was in office. The result was that it was killed as a governmental program, but resurrected as a non-profit organization with essentially the same mission.

+1 - that is my understanding.

Not to hijack, but I wonder about C&R FFL's as well. Does anybody have thoughts about that subject as it pertains to the new admin?

The CMP was authorized by Congress. It would take a change in the law to kill.

I'm not saying it can't happen. I'm just saying it would take more then an Executive Order.

CMP isn't going anywhere. In 1996, as a compromise it was spunoff from the DoD and became a corporation. The only threat to CMP is that eventually they will run out of Garands and carbines to sell.

Clinton and CMP M-14

During the Clinton administration supposedly the CMP was in process to sell decommisioned, semi-auto only converted M-14's. Clinton intervened and had all the M-14's sent to the Baltics so that they would not be available in the USA.

about the C&Rs

To answer Big Matt We C&R FFLs will probably be safe depending on what we collect.If you collect AKs,SKS and other semi auto then I cannot accurately give you a realistic answer.I myself collect bolt action (That's single shot) and historic antiques(before 1896). Getting back to CMP I have a feeling that they will be left alone.The M1 Garand is a respected part of American history.l do not collect them because they are not in my genre.

oh yes, there is a reason why those M1, M14, and M1911 were obsoleted decades ago.

I heard they'd barely penetrate a simple t-shirt!

No CMP m-14s. Once a machine gun, always a MG. There are a few "marksman" rifles, similar to the M-14 floating around the .gov. They were never designated as M-14 and do not have any full-auto provisions. They are slightly rarer than authentic tighty whiteys worn by Gengis Kahn, and priced accordingly. This info came from the Garand Collectors Association magazine.

Buy a M-1 from CMP. Then get 1k rounds from same source. The rifles are 55-60 years old, and the ones I've bought purr like a tomcat full of sardines. Plus Gen. Patton loved them.

There is that poem about despotism and inaction on behalf of one's fellow man-you know the one that goes "and then they came for the ---- but I didn't worry because I wasn't a -----.

If you re-write that poem to include a stanza that begins, "And then they came for those citizens who own and are proficient with the U.S. Rifle Caliber .30 M-1..."

Well, I'm not sure where the poem started, but I know where it ended.

The CMP has strong angels on its shoulders.

Happy Thanksgiving and please remember Our President and President Elect in your Holiday Blessing if you are so inclined.

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social Democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social Democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I was not a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out

Oh posh--the M-1 Garand is a 'fudd' gun anyway---it can't do the damage those dangerous and dastardly AK's and AR's can. After all, THOSE guns are made to KILL people!

And the ironic thing is given a choice of being shot by one round from and "evil" AR-15 or one round from a Garand, I'd take the .223 every time.

The whole gun issue is essentially up for sale under an Obama Presidency... but I can tell you it doesn't look good based on his Chief Law Enforcer.

As this effects CMP, hopefully it having been spun off the USG will help it (in terms of avoiding getting axed). Granted, if Obama turns out to be the terror to free enterprise the talk radio cicuit thinks he will be, that would be no issue for him.

Anyone who really thinks that the M1 rifle is within the foul lines in the eyes of our adversaries is either naïve or misinformed.

On a curious note as a supporter of the CMP I would like to know if there was a crime commited with an M1 garand or an M1 carbine issued from the CMP.
It would prove to be interesting just to find out.
