FWIW, Assault weapons now include all semi-automatic firearms

Food for thought: California's "assault weapon" ban, all iterations of it, allows grandfathering but not inheritance. There will be a point where no legally registered "assault weapon" will be around in the state as the generations pass. Fighting this stuff head-on is the only path.
Meh. The guns will go underground when the legal avenues exhaust themselves. The only thing that's for certain is that people will not be without guns.

So who are you going to vote for in 2020 to help preserve gun rights/2A?
A local radio show this afternoon was theorizing that, if it looks like he might lose the 2020 election, President Trump might choose not to run and let Pense run instead.
Why the silence?
Possibly because they are afraid of censorship by the mods for voicing what they really think. After all, some of us are thinking of "non-legal" actions we might have to take in the near future should the politicians violate their "oaths of office" even more than they have already.

gun community itself must take more responsibility in making sure that problematic people don't get guns.
No. Car drivers are not responsible for keeping drunk drivers from buying cars.

And safe drivers without accident record CAN become drunk drivers. ;) Cars don't kill people, drunk drivers kill people. And I don't think you would support banning cars, do you? Let's see, what are the most dangerous "assault type vehicle" ... yup, all cars can kill.

Arbitrarily calling one type of car more "dangerous" won't stop the drunk drivers from killing people.

Maybe there is absolutely nothing that can be done to prevent such tragedies.
It's called "life". Some people all around the world "choose" to kill people.

And would you support banning drunk people?

Apparently some of us will try to use the voting process to protect our rights while others are content to become felons based on personal prejudices.

This is a really bad analogy. We do in fact designate certain vehicles as more dangerous than others. That's why we have different classes of licenses and any jurisdiction that I can think of requires a specific endorsement for motorcycles.
As well as restrictions based on vision, diabetes, seizures, and other disabilities.
There's a reason why I avoid using the car/gun analog in discussions YMMV.

I meant 2 door vs 4 door and sedan vs hatch back as assault weapons are "arbitrarily" designated by "features" on same type of firearm - Essentially same car but different features.

I understood your intent but at the same time all laws are at some level a list arbitrary rules and features. How much more dangerous is a commercial vehicle 1 pound over the threshold for a CDL vs one loaded to one pound below?

When the argument is classifying certain firearms as more dangerous than others bringing up cars weakens your argument. Like I said it may work out but it carries a bit of risk to what you are trying to argue.
