G3 or AK47

matches. Slamfire posted a photo of the rear sight in post #8 that is not what the HK G3 sight looks like at all and I guess that the different manufacturers of HK G3 clones have different quality levels, that lead to different accuracy. .

The original PTR rear sight had a notch for the lowest setting, which I assume was 100 yards. I was used to an aperture, and PTR said they had "surplus" ones, so that is what I put on.

Having a G3 dropped to you down a two story building, I am sure it gets heavier every drop. Sammy, our last WW2 veteran, survivor of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, he made the comment that getting hit with a bandolier of 30-06 ammunition did not tickle. Marines would be hollering for ammunition, and no body wants to stand up and walk over, as bullets were flying over head, so the Marines learned how to sling a bandolier, while prone, in the general direction of the needy. I think there were 48 rounds on eight round clips to a bandolier. And you can imagine getting beaned by one of those, as they came flying through the air!

Having owned both an HK-91 and still own an AK varient, I agree that both have their places.

For those that talk about the weight of the HK-91/G3, have you ever carried it? HK designed one of the best slings ever made. You could carry the rifle in the standard on the shoulder position, assault position or in a biathlon position. Many have copied it over the years.

The factory HK scope mount is another feature that no AK can match. Plus you can remove it with scope attached and replace it without messing with the zero.

The HK-91/G3 is also the basic rifle that gave way to this beauty.

The AK will always be a great rifle for its intended purposes. No one will ever doubt that, nor will they be able to.

Depending on the area I was in the most would be my decision maker. Short ranges, city areas would be an AK. Long open areas, I would take the G3 with a factory scope/mount option.

Having owned a number of different rifles, my 'collection' recently shrank down to a few imported AKMs, a VZ-58 and this spring, a pair of PTR-91s; "classic GI" and A3SK.

Partly due to the nice aperture sights on the PTRs, they are my favorite guns . The ergos were expected to be simply what they Are.... and don't bother me one bit.
The PTR's rear sight diopter ('drum') is easily rotated Without using any tool.;)

A German friend (from Essen NRW) who had Never handled any HK or PTR charged one of mine, then pulled the trigger a few times. He has owned a 'green box' Colt AR since 1985 and recently added a nib Springfield M1A-1 to his collection.

Ralph feels like Americans are So pampered by other guns' ergonomics, and simply shook his head o_O when I described common complaints about PTR-91s. He offered to buy my "classic GI" 91 on the spot.
