Not too long ago, I asked for a low-down on the SIG series - and was usefully informed. I still tho find it hard to remember what is what - same with Glocks.

I am more than interested in getting a SIG .. and may even (gulp) weaken and add a Glock. Leaving aside caliber choice as a major factor, can you guys with either or both, ''sell'' me what you consider is best, for you.

Tell me what you have, what is the physical size (full, compact, sub compact) .... why you made the choice and why you like it (assuming you do!).

After some input it might well help me make a better informed decision if I go this direction. This is not BTW a ''Glock vs SIG'' competition! Just that I am looking seriously at both and want a more rounded user feedback reference.

I am a SIG guy. I like the manual of arms, field strip method and in my experience I have never shot a more reliable autochucker.

I currently own the following.

P220ST .45 Big ole' full size .45 ACP. The finest double action .45 period.
P226 9x19mm basically the size of a P220. 15 shot capacity.
P229TT .40 caliber 12 shot middle sized gun.
P225 9x19mm single stack 8 shot. Very comfortable gun. Easy to conceal.
P239TT .40 caliber tiny single stack 7 shot. Super easy to conceal shoots like a full size gun.
P245 .45 ACP red headed step child of the P220. This is a tiny carry version. 6 shots, small grip that doesn't fit most people. SIG's least popular gun but it fits me well and I love it.

Glock 30 little brick .45 ACP. 10 shots, very small but thick. Generally reliable but not as much as the above SIGs. Great finish, great capacity and one trigger pull to learn is nice. I do not like having to pull the trigger to take down and I felt the trigger was too light for me to feel comfortable carrying. Just a personal thing, not a dig on the gun.

If you want picture comparisons let me know.

Chris

I like the Sig P225. I guess Sig considers it a compact. It handles very well and shoots even better. I really like the single-stack grip frame. The 228 is great, too, but the 225 is a better fit for me. The P239 is pretty slick as well but it doesn't feel as good in my hand.

I don't have one, but I also like the Glock 19. Compact, accurate, and reliable.

I only have 1 glock and it is the only one I will ever buy.....a G26 for conceal carry and it is starting to lose favor for my CZ P01 instead to carry...If I do break down and buy another glock it would have to be the G20 or G29, and I already have 4 10MM's......too bad the Sig's and H&K's are so much more pricey than the glocks...

All i can say is had a sig 229 didnt like it sold it less tan 3 weeks after getting it ..

Want a G-17 9mm shot one a ton shoot awefull well with it fits my hand pretty good on 2005 want list

Wow! Nice response and so quick. Thx a lot guys - this is what I am after. Chris - thx for that detailed line up.

tc300 ... what was so bad re the 229? Just curious. Fit? What?

Forget model but guy at club was showing me a Glock .45 which was a double stacker ... felt rather good and capacity made it more than desirable!

Here is a basic size/profile comparison less the P245 and the P226. TT stands for two tone, ST stands for all stainless.

In order from the top.
P220ST .45
P220TT .40
P225 9x19 mm
P239TT .40

The P245 would fit in between the P239 and the P225. The P226 would fall in right after the P220ST.

A Glock30 would basically be about the size of the P239 but easily twice as thick. A Glock 19 is a tad bit smaller feeling then the P229. A Glock 26/27 would be smaller than the P239 but again much thicker.

I totally agree with Cslinger EXCEPT I think that the polymer SIG's arent that great...I shot one and i have smaller hands....didnt care for it at all really like the P229 I have both the 40 and 357 sig barrel...with the 357 factory bbl it is quite accurate....I also have a P239 9mm...great carry gun....none of the sigs I have shot have jammed

Glocks are good too..I have a g27 for CCW...and a glock 21...my best friend has 4 glocks...a 36, 27, 34, and 22....they are all more accurate than I am..but from the bench I can shoot the 34 better than most autoloaders....they all fit the hand better than some autos...berettas, etc....never had any glocks jam either with quality ammo....one thing about the glocks is that to me they are light weight so easier to carry especially the G27(next to the P239) it is a great carry gun

either way they are great guns...any of them...just depends on what one fits your hand better and you like better....

Handle 'em both. Glocks just don't feel right to me. The grip angle is wrong and I can't bring myself to like their controls. SIGs, on the other hand, feel very good. They point more naturally for me than anything else I've tried.

I have a P228 and a P220. They've been dead nuts reliable for years.

BTW, I much prefer the SIG triggers over the Glocks, even taking into consideration the first DA shot.

Try them out. Shoot them both and see what you prefer. They're both good guns.

The only Glock which I'm intrigued by is the Model 29. A concealable 10mm for carry would be nice. Of course, I'd want to shoot one before buying. It might be one of those "better in theory" things. :scrutiny:

Dear P95Carry

I own several SIG handguns and have owned a variety of Glocks e.g. 19, 26, 30. and 21. Currently I own 3 SIGS. A 220, 220ST, and a 232. My EDG is a standard 220 two-tone and I find it excellent in every way. The ST is a real shooter and IMHO the 232 is the sexiest looking gun on the market.

I will not say anything bad about the Glocks. Glocks are what they are. All that I once owned were reliable, accurate, and highly functional. My problem is that I have never been able to get comfortable with Glocks Safe Action setup. I admit that it is my problem - not Glock's but, having said that, I just have never been able to feel safe with Safe Action as a carry gun. FWIW  Good shooting;)

More good stuff ... oh my - the information we have here is awesome. Thx again guys and the latest posters. This is becoming a SIG/Glock databse!

I am I think drawn to the 226 currently - not only as a carry but I think it could serve well for IDPA. Still thinking tho.

Dairy - I am same as you with Glocks .. it's an ''ergonomics'' thing! Bit late in the day perhaps for me to make that much of a change.

One small SIG question - no two actually. How much will spare mags run me .. approx? And .. is SIG customer service good?

Exactly. Couldn't have said it better myself. Not the guns problem, my problem.

I have both brands:

Sig 220
Sig 225
Glock 17
Glock 19
Glock 21

Both have proven absolutley reliable in my shooting. I think both brands exhibit excellent quality. IMHO you couldn't go wrong with either. Handle both and buy what feels good to you.

I have more experience with Glocks, so I can't really do a fair comparison. However, I'd have no qualms about recommending a Glock. I own a model 22, which is a full size frame in .40. I've shot a model 17 extensively, which is essentially the same gun but in 9mm.

Personally, those are the 2 primary calibers I'd consider (though .357 SIG would be a good one too) for a Glock. When I buy a .45, I'm going all out for a 1911.

Depending on how big your hands are, you may find the compact counterparts more comfortable. This would be the model 19 (9mm) and model 23 (.40). I can attest that the model 19 is extremely comfortable to shoot; there's very little muzzle flip, and it's very accurate. Even with the compact frame, you can hold 15 shots of 9mm or 13 of .40.

The subcompact versions are too small for my hands, but I'm sure they fit just right for some people.

As others have stated, Glocks will be less expensive. Mine was a police trade in and was $400 (including taxes and paperwork fees) for the gun, 2 magazines, the box/manual, and night sights.

The "safety" trigger is a bit off-putting for some new Glock users, though I found I got used to it quickly. They are easy to field strip and clean and have relatively few moving parts to break. New, full capacity magazines will also be a bit cheaper.

That's my $0.02

If you want some pictures or have other questions, feel free to send me a message.

Kjay - you are right of course ... ''try b4 buy''!

I have some options to try from fellow shooters at the club ... tho our IDPA season will not kick off again now until April ( :( ).

Reason for this thread is to get as broad a view as I can, never having actually dug deep to try and ''see'' the whole range of options. Once I can feel I have narrowed down the options (for me) then I most surely will be out to try what I can. I have tried G17 and a buddy has just got a G19 - so will hope to try that. Overall tho I think for now it'll be down to a SIG as a first choice, mainly because I am not a ''Glock trigger fan'' ... well not so far! :)

A comment about magazine costs was mentioned. Glock magazine will most definitely be cheaper.

For SIGs I would almost always opt for the MecGar +2 flush fits and the ACT/NOVAK 8 rounders for the P220. Both are very inexpensive, around $21.00 and both are arguably better than the factory originals. Of course MecGar makes the factory originals but I digress.

You will be depressed should you go pricing 8 round SIG P220 factory stainless magazines. Not HK P7M8 mag depressed but certainly not happy. :uhoh:

In case anybody hasn't noticed I am having a very slow Monday and it is my countdown to vacation week so I am completely unmotivated and some would say bored. So thanks for the intellectual exercise so to speak.

One more thing. Be sure to check out Glocktalk.com and sigforum.com. Lots of good info, pictures etc. The Sigforum folks are also very good about giving info on other makes and models as well. They tend to all be the purest of gun nuts in that they may have a favorite brand but if it goes bang reliably it's cool enought to try and buy. :D

I like Glock's simplicity and tough finish but I cannot get used to Safe-Action. It's not the Glock's fault but my own. I've gotten to the point where I prefer to make my tools work for me rather than me having to work for them. Between Glocks and SIGs I give the nod to SIGs. I've only one SIG choke, but it had been sitting for months and wasn't cleaned and lubed before the range visit. I've personally seens lots of Glocks choke, could've been limpwristing, could've been bad ammo, I don't know but I do know that we make decisions based on experience, and in my experience SIGs are more reliable.

Accuracy depends on how well the operator has mastered Safe-Action vs DA/SA. In my experience people are more accurate with SIGs.

Try before you buy because what works for me might not work for you.

One other thought to consider when comparing. SIGs, in my exp., tend to like to run wet while Glocks tend to like to run dryer.

Does it matter, not really but like I said I am bored and trying to compare and contrast.

As for the comment about the SIG Pros. I don't own a PRO and I was one of those snobs who's first thought was "A plastic SIG!!! What kind of heathen would want that?" Now after I have had a little experience with the GLIG or SOCK, I have to admit that the triggers have all been marvelous, better then the classic series triggers IMHO. The grip is a bit odd and I don't like the takedown, mostly because I love the classic series takedown but they seem to be fine plastic pistols.

SIGs do like to run wetter than Glocks, not slobbering wet dripping with lube, but a drop in all the right places will keep them ticking like a fine watch. You're right about the SIG Pros, the DA and SA tends to be better than on the Classics, but I don't like how they feel in the hand.

Sigs I own are P220ST, P226, and P225. I had a Glock 34. The Glock pointed differently that all other hanguns I owned. The grip angle made it hard for me to go between shooting my different guns. CZs, 1911s, HKs...for me all have a similar grip angle, the Glock was too different. I had no problems with the glock. It was reliable and accurate. I replaced it with a just as reliable and accurate XD9 Tactical. Someone people are better able to transition between Glocks and other pistols, I wasn't one of them, so it went to an owner who's using it for games.

I own G19's, G32's (w/.40 bbls) and G20's (w/.40 bbl and soon to add 357 SIG bbl). I also own a 226 (357 SIG w/.40 bbl) and 229 (357 SIG w/.40 bbl), and I used to own a SIG Pro (.40).

Re accuracy, in .40 and 357 SIG the SIGs have it over the Glocks; maybe 1/3 - 1/2 more accurate. My G20, on the other hand, is very accurate - on par with the SIGs. Having shot (but not owned) various 9mm SIGs, I'd definitely give them the edge in accuracy as well, tho my G19's will shoot 2-2.5" rested, and that isn't bad.

For carry, I use a G19 abt 99% of the time. Accuracy is good, and I like the fact that Glocks are simple to use, durable, and I can use them hard and not feel bad about it. Glocks not only tolerate abuse, they are so ugly as to deserve it. Not that I have any qualms about the durability of SIGs - they seem to do well when put to the test and mine have held up.

Size-wise, the G19 and 229 are comparable. The 226 is bigger, but is nearly the same size as a C&L'ed Commander-size 1911, which ironically is often touted for its concealability. The 226 is a bit thicker, tho. For my hands, the 226 fits the best of the SIGs. I use the rubber decal grips on my Glocks to build them up to fit. I have pretty big hands, and the baby Glocks and SIG 239 are way too small for me. The stock plastic grips on both SIGs and Glocks are too slippery for my taste.

Re ergonomics, I'm now so used to the Glocks that they are a "natural" in fit and point. In terms of design grace and elegance, the metal SIGs win, but the SIG Pro was the most uncomfortable pistol I've ever owned or shot. Neither of the interchangeable grips fit me, and it was a major disappointment after buying the 2xx series guns - I gladly dumped it, tho it was reliable.

Speaking of reliability, I've had nary a problem with either make. Both eat various ammo brands and bullet wts with impunity.

With regards to SIG magazine pricing...

Before the AWB sunset, I was making due with 10 rounders for my P228, since factory standard-caps were going for between $50 and $100 each. I did pick up a couple Pro-Mag 13-rounders for $13 or so, but they don't work very well.

That joyous sound you may have heard the day after the ban ended was me ordering a bunch of 13-round factory mags. I got used ones for around $15 or $16, and they have been perfect. I've also heard good things about the Mec-Gars.

For my P220, I picked up some 7-round factory mags from CTD (I think). They work great and were under $20 each.

Since I don't own one, I've never bothered to price Glock mags.

Glocks not only tolerate abuse, they are so ugly as to deserve it.

Well, I think that's a bit harsh. Glocks may have a spartan appearance, but that doesn't mean the aesthetics aren't pleasing in a more subtle way.
