Thread Comment

This is a very interesting thread. Thanks to all who have posted, it increases our firearm knowledge base, and has some great posts.

regard,

:):):)

Pictured is a favorite of mine, a hammerless .32. It's dead-nuts reliable, tiny and perfect for one's pocket. I actually carry the thing pretty often when I want something small and snag-free in the summer during shorts and t-shirt time. It's pretty accurate, too.

BTW, for all of you H&R fans, I'm selling a sweet 7.5" convertible 676 (w/both cylinders) and a near-as-you-can-get-to-mint 930 nickel-plated snubbie in the classifieds here.

This one, though, I'll never sell. It just comes in too handy:

H&R self loader question

I've just acquired an H&R self-loader in .32 acp and have been trying to find assembly / dis-assembly diagrams and information with no luck. Any one know of such a thing? Field stripping is not problem (yet), but I'd like to find complete info if I can. Help?

It is with profound sadness that I must announce the passing of one of our main contributors to this H&R thread. Member JamesJo (Jim Ritchie) passed away during the night of March 31, 2012. He was a good friend of mine and an avid collector and proud poster of pictures of his prized H&R convertibles and Sportsman revolvers. My deepest sympathies and wishes go out to his family.

very sorry to hear that Jim. My condolences to you on the loss of your friend and also to his family. RIP.

That is sad news. I became a fan of his H&R photos and posts.

Prayers for him and his family.

I'll check in with a Model 1904 "Double Action"...

If anybody knows how to adjust the front sight, I'd love to know!

H&R Model 949

I need to replace the mainspring/guide rod assy. I bought one with the plastic and one made from steel. Did anyone ever change one without going to a gunsmith?
Thanks

I'm very sorry to hear that, I always looked forward to his posts. I realize it's been a few weeks, but I hadn't checked this thread lately. Best wishes for his family in their time of sorrow.

I just picked up a Rice framed .22 special with a slightly lower SN than yours. Unfortunately the previous owner had stored it in a holster and it had some surface rust ruining the collector value but the gun locks up tight and the bore is minty. I picked it up for the princely sum of $100 and I cant seem to miss with it. I bought it as a truck gun a job for which it will perform yoman service I'm sure. It has peaked my interest in aquiring a nice Sportsman or 999 or both for that matter.

H&R 949 serial

So, I inherited a 949 from my dad. As far as I can tell the date code would make it's prodution date in the early 60's. Can anyone confirm this for me? Serial starts with AC. Thanks

Here's a few of mine. An H&R self loading .25

.32 S&W long. This one I'm quite certain is unfired. Very pleased with it.

Also got this longer barreled one that is earlier. Are these rare with the spurless hammer and 5 inch barrel?

Posted this elsewhere, but never in this thread. Shame on me. Sportsman 999 made around 1937. Single action is incredible - possibly the best I've ever shot. No take-up, and very crisp and light.

Only downside is sometimes the cylinder will slip on the center pin when opening up. I've replaced the "button" catch, but I'm wondering if the grove that it rides in inside the cylinder might be a little shallow...

A H&R Premier 22 Rimfire. This one came down thru my maternal great grandmother. IRRC the s/n dates to the late 1890's early 1900's. I still have the black gutta percha grips, they're just removed in this photo. And it has a story:

In 1959, or so, my mother used this revolver to kill a rattle snake. My dad was in the Air Force and they were living in base housing at Homestead AFB in Florida. My dad was a B-47 navigator and their Wing was deployed on a Reflex mission. So, at the time he was cooling his jets (literally) on a runway somewhere in Morocco. All the husbands were gone and all the wives were home alone with their little kids.

This big rattle snake was sunny itself on a concrete culvert structure which was in a back yard area shared by a dozen house. The wives were freaking out. Running in circles. "What to do? What to do?" My mom went inside, grabbed her H&R, killed the snake and threw it's carcass over the clothes line. Somewhere in my parent's family photos is a picture of that dead snake hang from the clothes line, it's gotta be about 4 feet long, with my mom standing by with her trusty H&R Premier.

Mike,

Thanks. I just noticed you and I have the same Join Date. Synchronicity. I've spent some time in Garland over the years. My former employer has a large manufacturing facility there. Hint: it's a household brand name know for their macaroni & cheese. (I am a "cheese head" after all). :p:p:p

Nice triple 9, Geldarr!

Maybe that groove in the cylinder that the catch rides in is full of crusted old goo?
