Today at my local gun store I bought a Savage MkII. I complete the 4473 and the guy who waited on me did the NCIC check. After he hung up he looked me directly in the eye and said "They told me to hold you here and call the police." I stared back at him for a moment not knowing what to say. So finally I say "are you serious?" Then he smiles and says "just kiddin ya"

Jeez that scared the crap out of me.

I had an almost identical experience a few weeks ago while picking up my Charles Daly 1911. I was finishing dotting the I's and crossing my T's on the paperwork and the head clerk comes out of the office, sees me and goes "Hey, I'm glad you're here. When you're done, I need you to talk with someone." Curious, I ask who. "I think his name is Agent James, from the ATF. He called the other day when we put your 4473 through and he said you're buying too many guns. He just needs to ask you a few things. It's probably nothing." Straight face, no hint of a joke.

I was about to stutter a response, when he breaks down and goes "too easy."

He got me good.

The problem is I've had identity theft problems before and have even been arrested because of it. Hence why it scared the jeebus out of me.

I'm sure he didn't know that, but still it was just plain unsettling and didn't really feel like a good ol' gotchya joke afterwards.

That happened 2 days ago to me. The seller came back to us, looked at my gf I brought along, and told me, "I've got some bad news." Looked at her," Do you know how big of a sicko he is?" I took a sigh of relief there. It was around 6pm then and I was thinking he couldn't get though. She replied jokingly with a, "So all his mom was saying has been true?!" We had been shooting the bull for about an hour or so by then. Got my heart pumping but he got a huge grin out of me.

I'd like to think I have a sense of humor but I think I'd object to having a trick like that played upon me by anybody but a friend.

To have a business pull a trick like that on a customer just doesn't seem all that professional.

Again, if I knew the business owner pretty well then maybe I wouldn't mind but I'm not on a first name basis with any of the people behind the counter at any of the local gunshops.

Fun is fun

I really don't see it as a problem. I know I'm legal, I know I didn't do anything wrong, so choice #3? He's pullin my chain. No harm, no foul.

I guess some folks are a little more high-strung.

Depends on the dealer. If it was one I didn't know, I'd be a little upset. If it was Will (with whom I deal almost exclusively), I doubt he'd even be able to finish it before I called BS.

In other words, it depends on your relationship with the dealer.

Many people do not know the dealer has no idea of why if there is a problem with the NCIC.

The only thing that I get is a transaction number for the 4473. If it starts with a "A" I can transfer the gun. If it starts with a "D" I can not do the transaction. I have no idea why some one is denied.

Happened to me... kind of. My business neighbor and friend, who is an FFL, was transferring a couple rifles to a THR member from Correia as a favor to me. I won't mention the THR member's name, but his initials are b.r.a.t.c.h.

When I walked over to see how it was going, he looked at me with a straight face and said: "Did you know your friend is a felon?" He held the straight face for a couple seconds and then broke out in a huge grin. "Just kidding!"

Got me going for a little bit.

the guy I have bought a few from and where I most often shoot played a similar joke on me when I bought my SA .45. He told me that he couldn't let me take it with me as I failed the check and that I'd have to give it a few days and call him back. Confused, I asked why it came back and he said "Oh you know, there are probably a thousand guys named XXX and one of them probably did something illegal and that little confusion is more than likely it. We talked about how incompetent .gov workers are and blah blah blah. I was a little ticked since I had to leave my newly purchased gun there until they figured out the problem. As I was getting in my truck to leave my cell rang and it was him. He said he was just messing with me and we both got a good laugh out of it.
I agree that that would not be cool if I didn't know the guy but I did so it'd be no different than me playing a joke on a good buddy.

Yeh, they can joke at you, but you'd better never try joking with them, or you really would be in hot water.
(Customer, filling out form) "By the way, do you happen to have Al Queda's phone number? I had it here, and now I can't seem to find it . . ."
(Clerk) "SECURITY!!!"

I really don't see it as a problem. I know I'm legal, I know I didn't do anything wrong, so choice #3?

Yeah, and the ATF is known for taking the person's legality into consideration and not picking nits where there's nothing to fret over, aren't they?

How could anyone here think this was a "funny" joke - unless they're a sadistic bastard, that is?

What's the reasonable response to such a statement from someone like that? Well, if you know you're innocent of any wrong doing, you're likely to get pissed off and angry, or at least scared. You're likely going to have a hefty load of legal fees, and have your property confiscated now, you're thinking. And every little thing you've done relating to the government will now likely be scrutinized to nail you to the wall, because the ATF doesn't typically just let people go when they find out you've done nothing wrong in respect to firearms: did you file your taxes properly, not making a stupid mistake? Every year? How about other legal dealings with the government? Will your employer enjoy you being arrested by federal agents?

In short, the guy behind the counter is joking from a position of authority that your life is now over. NOT FUNNY.

If a local shop were to do either of the first two described situations to me, I'd never return and they'd lose that sale, just like that. Maybe I'm paranoid, but filling out that 4473 each time makes me nervous enough as it is.
Let's see, how about this: if you were to go to the PD to get a license renewal and the person at the counter was taking forever, and you asked why. S/he says, "Oh, I'm sorry, sir. It's just that something came up when I looked at your name in the database, and we're waiting for federal law enforcement officers to respond before we can continue." Yeah, that's real funny.

This joke would leave me cold.

I came back from an overseas assignment after a number of years and went to buy a gun and failed the NICS check. The background check folks are not supposed to tell you much about what the problem is, leaving you mostly in the dark. I had to get fingerprinted, request redress of the NICS system, and appeal. It took about three months to get cleared.

It was a case of someone else with the same name, and similar information as mine. (found this out after the fact...)

It was not fun, and I still get simaltaneously annoyed and nervous when I do my paperwork for a purchase.

Wow. Maybe I'm missing the boat, but I can't believe some of the responses. Sure, you might not have appreciated it, but to be fair, my sense of humor is not THAT skewed. I know the guy, he knows me, I know that if I had come up in such a call from the ATF he would have had me stopped before I could get to ANY gun so the problem (if any) could be cleared up.

What he did, to me, amounts to something like "Hey, is that your car they're towing out there?" because I KNOW there would be no way the ATF wants me, and I KNOW that he wouldn't be standing there calmly if they did. He caught me off guard, with a funny (if somewhat mean) joke, and I fell for it.

And to the commenter who said it's ok for them to joke with us, but not vice versa, I guess that's why I have the clerks in tears dang near every time I'm there. Last pistol I bought, the one clerk kept tearing the reciepts, so I asked him if he wanted me to buy him a new crash helmet since he'd obviously lost his, and he didn't get mad at all. Fun is fun.

when I was denied last week. I just kept asking the guy if he was joking. I must have asked him 5 times if he was joking. I really wish he had been joking.

Haha Nice one

A local dealer did that to me.

I maced him.

No, I don't mean the freakin' stuff in a spray can. The medieval club with multiple edges, you know.

Haha.

I play that joke the other way sometimes.

When I travel for work I usually dress business casual and I stop at any gun store I come across, time permitting.

When I walk into a new store, I usually enter saying "Hello, I represent the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and I'd like to speak with the owner." I've also introduced myself as a representative of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and as agent Joe Smith of the BATFE.

I've gotten responses ranging from "Oh Sh**!" to "I don't have to answer any of your F****** questions!"

Most of them can take a joke but I've been tossed from one store because of it.
