I was wondering if there's a list somewhere for the "Handgun of the Year" for every year in the past that they've been doing it? I was wondering because for 2007 I saw someplace it was the Smith & Wesson M&P 45, 2006 it was the Springfield XD 45, and I swear I heard someone say that in the past it was a certain Glock model.

I would think that in most gun magazines, the criteria would be who spends the most in advertising dollars.

P-345 handgun of the year?

I'd like to think that dry firing a handgun without the magazine inserted should damage the firing mechanism. I wonder how they base their votes for Handgun of the year?

how many people that actually own/ccw do think really take the time and train like they should? also how many do you think actually do dry firing drills to improve themselves? i think this is a non issue. is the problem you have with this that the mag being in the weapon presents a safety concern?

i have no issues with a clear safe weapon dry firing with the magazine inserted. what about guns with magazine disconect safties where the mag has to be in for the gun to function? do you just not dry fire them because the mag has to be in the weapon?

i don't believe that this is a big enough issue to disqulify a particualr handgun from handgun of the year and i am sure that my opinions are shared by those that make the deciseion on the winners.

i am sure there are many more, more "important" variables in the selection process for handgun of the year. ie reliability, price, accuracy, finish, trigger pull, sights, etc.

I also have to wonder what the criteria are. Maybe the M&P was simply the best selling of those released this year and it just happened to be a 45. Regardless, congrats to Smith.

About every gun mag from Guns and Ammo, to the American Rifleman, to Gun Tests has their own list of the best offerings of the year. I'm not certain there is any one list accepted by all as the most authoritative.

the HK45 Compact looks sooo sweet! i want a usp 45C more though, my usp 40 with Hogue grip jumps into my hand more than any other gun i've ever held

Don't you wish there existed a publication like Consumer's Report but for firearms?

I was expecting the EMP to win. I was mostly thinking the most innovative handgun would win, but as stated, it would be interesting to find out how they judge these things.

The EMP in .45 acp was the American Rifleman's "Handgun of the Year" for 2007, I believe it was in their July 2007 issue or thereabouts.

I am going to be the spoilsport here and say "who cares". A good gun is a good gun regardless of what awards it racks up. From a purely practical standpoint, those awards do nothing to add to the value of the gun, nor do they indicate superior quality or reliability. It's a nice thing to use as an advertising tool, but in the end, it means exactly nothing.

"Consumer Reports" ITSELF used to review firearms. I remember standing in the magazine section of Montgomery Ward in Oak Lawn, IL in the '70s, reading their reviews of a variety of handguns, including the updated version of the Browning M1922 in .380acp.

Just so.
It's a seller's and advertiser's gimmick, designed to pique customer interest, nothing more.
