Have 308 vs 30-06 threads gone the way of the Dodo bird?

My point is that with 270 or 243 or all the other debates it's largely subjective and there can be no concrete answer really. But with 308 and 30-06 (and even 30 carbine which was a mediocre calibre at best) there are millions of classic historically significant rifles that insure that the calibers are concreted into our history and therefore future.

.30-06 is a great round. I've had several over the years, but found I was gravitating to my .308s. Sold the last .30-06 four years ago.
Last year I realized that I wasn't shooting my .308s much any more, as my 6.5mm and 7mm rifles did everything I wanted. Sold the last .308 last year.
I won't debate anybody's love for a .30 caliber rifle. I just don't need one.

Six Million Reasons - why the .30-06 is not goin' anywhere.

I am old and old school. The .308 continues to be one of my favorite calibers and one of my favorite rifles in .308 is an old Remington 788 I bought in high school at Gibsons for about $140. It still shoots 1" groups after all these years. Also have a M77, Springfield Armor M1A and a Ruger Precision rifle all in .308 and I shoot all of them regularly for hogs.

I'm not seeing a valid versus here and like both cartridges just fine.

Two of my favorite bolt-action rifles are in these chamberings: a 30-06 Heym-manufactured, Western Field-branded, Mauser 98 mid-length actioned, full-stocked dream from the 1960s --

and my newish, ultra-light .308 Kimber Hunter semi-scout rifle (shown here without the optional, forward-mounted red dot) that ignores the weather and points like a magic wand!

Ammo for both is easy to find or make, though if you're feeding a military autoloader, factory 30-06 M2 ball is much harder to find in my neighborhood these days than .308 M80. Forget arguing and get several fine examples in both chamberings!

There's nothing cool about the '06 and 308 that the gun writers can hype as the latest and greatest.

I wish people wouldn't be recoil sensitive. If they weren't, the 280AI would be more popular.

if we stay soft as we are now.

There won’t be any AMERICA
because some foreign soldiery will invade us

and breed a hardier race!”

What caliber is better is a never end topic. However, I solved the dilemma like that.
30.06 gave the reasons to have a Rem 700 and a Garand.
308 gave the reasons to have FAL, CZ 550, AR-10, PTR, M-14A1, AK and the like.

Both have proven efficiency in battle fields and hunting capabilities

I recall hearing a while back that the two calibers with the most R&D were .224" and .308". Now, all the old .308 vs .30-06 arguements... it all seemed to be less about bullets diameter and more about ranges of bullet weights and powders. Other than some comments about not needing a .30caliber, is there really any reason not to have one or the other or both?

I guess people are too preoccupied arguing over which color makes the bestest "favorite color".

Same difference

And then, a good many of those who agree about .223/5.56... unless we're talking crankbolts... still seem to have to argue about what color the rifle is. The .30Carbine/.30-30/.308/.30-06 fans don't seem to have that problem.

That's a different kind of cool. Knowing you can take a variety of older crankbolts and semi-autos, knowing they go bang every time, and get ammo just about anywhere in North America and get the job done.
