Have 308 vs 30-06 threads gone the way of the Dodo bird?

I have .308 and 30-06. Meh. My hunting friends ask if I have a .270. I don't . They ask why not because they say .270 is "better". I just thank them for their wisdom and tell them I'll get a .270 a soon as budget permits. I've been doing that for 30 years. :D

Have bored gun-forum-goers stopped beating the 308 vs. 30-06 dead horse? Well, I was grateful the last few years that they had buried the hatchet, until this thread had to pull it up by the haft.

I've owned both, and like both. But with my small frame shoulders, I prefer the .308 to the '06. Not that I've shot a lot of critters with either. My 7mm-08 gets most of the serious jobs.

There's a thread about perceived recoil while hunting. I've shot my 30-06 scores of times hunting without remembering the recoil. To this day hunting 30 years I don't fully comprehend how that's possible. On the range in the summer wearing just a t-shirt shooting an '06 I'm flinching after 10 rounds.

I totally understand (and agree). But I like to shoot quite a bit and spend a lot of time on the bench in a T-shirt. I don't trust a hunting rifle until I've put dozens upon dozens of rounds downrange and I am bored with consistently accurate results. Plus, I handload so that requires a lot of shooting alone. To add to that, I prefer carrying very light rifles. Not a good combo for anything that recoils more than the .308

! think they are both great and extremely useful. 308 for accuracy, 30-06 for power and ability to use heavier bullets. Both will do everything an American hunter ever needs. My current favorite is the 7-08 because of reduced recoil but that doesn't mean I dislike any other cartridge.

I will take a 30-06 over a 308 in the same gun, but I don't mind a 308 in a short action. It is kinda nice to share reloading components between the two, and most jobs the difference is unnoticeable.

I bought in high school at Gibsons for about $140.

I really miss Gibson’s. There are two left, in Kerrville and Weatherford. If I’m in either town I always go there.

I prefer 30-06 over .308 and have no valid reason for feeling that way. I have a 30-06, sighted it in with 165 grain Core-lokts when I bought it and haven’t shot it since.

I had a friend that offered me a CZ 7mm rem mag to try it before he passed to give it to me, after 30 rounds I fell that my upper denture was loose and thanked him but I passed.
