Hitting the lands

Started making up a ladder for some RMR 115 bullets and made a dummy with no powder or primer.

I got this result by spinning the round in the barrel. Plunked great but made this scraping line just above the case.

BTW I used a CZ 75 B barrel, always 9 mm with mark Feb 2023.jpg VERY tight.

What is you COL? It would appear that you could get away with shooting them, but I'd think seating just a bit deeper would be better. The next bullet may be just enough to stick in the lands. I've had near zero success with coated bullets so I've about convinced myself to quit trying. I appreciate lower cost, but the extra work effort to realize those cost savings isn't worth it to me. Others swear by coated...I swear AT coated.

I use X-TREME 115gr RN bullets that are loaded to a OAL of 1.145" in a CZ75b.

The OAL was chosen so not to touch the lands .

Sorry, should have noted that OAL is 1.128.

For the CZ I usually try for 1.100 average. It is a WIN case. I guess the 0.03 makes the difference.

I may need to try 115gr coated. I've only load 124gr Hi Tek rounds and they have been a total bane to my shooting/loading success. I'd be a pleased puppy to seat my rounds to 1.125" maybe a bit less and maybe just slightly touch the lands.

I've had to seat my 124gr coated rounds to 1.085" to plunk clean. Let me tell you, that is NOT a pleasant experience. Of course now that I know these babies need to be seated that deep I could (should?) reduce the charge by 5% or more. I need to do something to use them up.

Just maybe some 115gr RMR pills will find their way to my loading room...but I'll be sure to try 1.115" or a bit longer.

Remember that your pistol's barrel IS your cartridge gauge. If the loaded round will drop-in the chamber with the base of the case flush with the barrel shroud, there is no interference between the bullet and the leade of the rifling. If the OAL of the loaded round is within the specified max for the caliber, you should have no functional problems, though accuracy is usually better when the clearance between the bullet body and origin of the rifling is minimized.

PRD1 - mhb - MIke

If it was a rifle cartridge, I would say “see how it shoots.”

fir a handgun cartridge, I would seat .010 deeper.

Rifle is for long range accuracy.

Handgun is for function. I’m afraid those wouldn’t reliably function.

Just to be clear, RMR’s 115 is a FMJ, I believe the one in the picture has been “sharpied”.

In the pistol calibers I reload, I always do a plunk test to find the max COL the barrel will allow. Depending on the bullet profile, and barrel, it’s sometimes less than the specified max for the caliber. I presume you referring to the SAAMI max. CZs often plunk less than max.

I think that is a bit long for 115gr bullets...especially RMR FMJ in a CZ.

A bit confused here.

If it "plunked great" it should have spun freely in the chamber. If it was spinning freely, there shouldn't be any marks on the bullet

9mm- Yes they do plunk great in the CZ barrel. Maybe I put too much downward pressure on the round when I spin it, causing the marks.

Also, what OAL do you use for the RMR 115? BTW my last buy at RMR I received some bullets that were 5.70 long rather than the previous ones that were 5.555. Both were 355.5 wide at base.

Plan to contact Jake.

Gifbohane,

You need to go back and check those micrometer readings again.
You’re 1 to 4 decimal places off.....

I think you're right. OP was trying to find where he hit the lands. I was pretty excited to see what I thought was coated lead with nearly flawless coating.
That said...I DO need to buy some RMR seeds.

The RMR in-house projectiles are great. I've gone through a couple thousand of their 115gr FMJs -- very satisfied.

@gifbohane -- It seems like the ones from my latest box are a bit longer as well, though I only have a few old samples left with which to compare.
