Hm...Which 9mm?

My hands don't work well with double stacks; those pistols have a tendency to twist in my grip. For that reason, I generally would go with any of the 39-series S&Ws (like my current S&W 639), a C&R P1 or P-38, a 1911A1 in 9mm, or a Firestar

Okay I looked up the CZ. The mags drop free right? I compared it to another CZ and it listed it as an Added feature.

The mag brake is easily pushed back on the CZ, to make the mags drop free. CZs are still a value, even after the current price hike

Another vote for CZ. Try one before you buy anything else.

I don't personally care for Glocks, but I have shot plenty of them and they are reliable if nothing else.

Sigs feel a bit awkward in my hands. Front heavy I guess.

Haven't shot the Ruger, but I have held one and it felt good. If it shoots anything like the other two craptacular Rugers I have owned then I won't ever be buying one.

I do like the XD. I have one in .45 ACP and plan on adding a 9mm to the fold. I hate that SA won't sell spare parts, but I haven't needed any yet.

I also like the Berretta 92. They are a bit heavy, and are definately overbuilt, but since this won't be a carry gun that shouldn't be a problem. Very accurate gun in my experience.

I have also had my eye on the new Taurus 24/7 series. I haven't shot one, but they do feel very, very good in my hands.

These are only my opinions and I am not an authority by any means. My favorite 9mm pistol is the CZ-75B, period. You can easily bend the mag brake out of the way. Nobody who has shot mine has had a complaint other than my best friend who is not a fan of cocked and locked carry. Everyone has shot it well and most "oooh" and "aaah" over the ergonomics. If it was me, I would buy a CZ 75 and slap on a Hogue over mold grip and be quite satisfied. Your mileage may vary of course.

If CCW really isn't a concern, then I like a Beretta 92. True it's big, but it has a good feel for most people, at least the people I know. I have most of the other guns you guys have mentioned, and for the most part they are all good to very good, but everybody should have a Beretta 92F IMHO. Beretta's and Glocks are like cockroaches, they'll be around forever:D. Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the listed pistols.

Try Them All

I would go to a range that rents pistols and try them all out. For a range gun, I would go with a BERETTA or SIG. The BERETTA is cheaper and just as reliable. I also prefer the BERETTA'S double action to the SIG. I find it smoother.

If you go for a GLOCK, I would go with a 19 unless you live somewhere that it is prohibited, like CANADA.

I have not tried the RUGER, so I cannot comment on it, but I also recommend the WALTHER P-99.

Everyone should own one of every gun mentioned so far.

All are great guns, I have never shot the ruger but I am sure its a good gun. I vote for the Sig 226 it is one of the best handguns ever made.

I m gonna add my two cents as well. I would have to agree with the masses. I have owned a sa xd, s&w m&p9, and now have a kahr cw9. All have been great pistols. I have to say the kahr seems to be more ammo sensitive than the others. My next gun will be ruger's sr9. This gun has got it all. Id at least give it some consideration. All are great guns though.

love love love my m&p...feels great, price is very right, quality has been great -so far, and shoots sweet.....im getting another when the 45 comes out...HOWEVER, that is my opinion. owned a glock 19 and say enough great things but after a couple multi day trainign classes i realised it just was not comfortable for me to shoot. it is very versitile though, accurate and reliable. used can be picked up relatively inexpensive.....hearing greta things about the new rugr and that price is nice too...

I've been looking at various 9MM semi-autos and I like the CZ 75B

* yeah the magazine is designed to only drop out so far, but their are
different ways to modify the stock part so it doesn't or you can buy the
replacement part which some models have that allows the mag to drop free.

* I like the DA -or- SA Cond One option.

* All Steel construction - absorbs recoil more consistent in weight. and the shape of the grip fits my hand - reminds me of a Browning Hi Power
I had some time back.

* It is also easier to field strip than the 1911 with no bushing or link on the barrel.

While I truly enjoy and appreciate the CZ75, I am a Sig guy at heart. The 226 you mentioned is one of the greatest handguns going IMO. Tough as nails. Shoots very comfortably, and holds its value if that is important to you.

I would also have you consider the Sig 228/9 pistol. Very much like the 226 only smaller. The 228 is my favorite handgun by far.

I can't argue with the Glock folks on reliability, function, price and such, but I would caution you to shoot one quite a bit before purchasing one. There are a lot of people who just aren't comfortable with the grip angle. If it feels good to you, then great, but I sure wouldn't buy one without shooting one first.

+1 with JR1:

The Sig 228 is a great choice for a 9mm. It's a true mid-size, and it's high cap....but small enough to carry if you ever decide to get your CCW.

Another gun to consider....don't laugh....is a good old Browning or FN Hi Power. They feel absolutely perfect in the hand, are reliable, and time/battle tested. I just picked up a FEG PJK-9HP (Hi Power clone) for $235 and LOVE it.

Out of all the polymer service pistols I've owned (Glock, XD, P99, USPc, Kahr), I can honestly say the XD is my favorite. I highly recommend it, and for around $500-$550 they are WELL worth it.

Ruger SR9 or maybe a new Beretta 92FS/92D

The new Ruger SR9 9mmNATO or maybe the Beretta 92FS/M-9a1 9mmNATO. The Ruger is highly rated but some have made complaints about the pistol already(jams, misfires, etc). You may want to wait a year or two before you get a SR9.
The Beretta 92FS or even better the M-9a1 model 9mmNATO would be a solid choice. The 92FS/M-9 has an ambi safety and is proven by years of hard use by the military/US law enforcement. The M-9a1 model is the military upgrade with an accessory rail and improved features over the older M-9 pistol.
Check www.gunsamerica.com or www.gunbroker.com for new listings/prices.

For protection/CC ammo get the Remington Golden Saber +P 124gr JHP(bonded) or the CCI/Speer Gold Dot 124gr JHP +P(bonded). The Glaser safety slug(silver) or Magsafe 9mmNATO loads would be great for home protection too ;).

Go Sig

...

Have to agree, IF you can find either a CPO P226 or a nice used P228, and if you could find one, a P229 9mm.. great ccw gun as well. All 3 mentioned are very very accurate guns, dependable, reliable, and one of, if not, the easiest guns to field strip, disassemble, inspect, clean, and reassemble, out there, bar none.. Key

And as mentioned, they hold value over the long years ahead for you.

Enjoy your first pick, and gun

See if you can shoot an M&P. I became a convert once I pointed a rental downrange. Points very naturally for me versus the glock.

Definitely find a range where you can rent or a buddy and try them all out. The latest and greatest features won't help if the thing doesn't fit you and everything you listed should go "bang" each time you pull the trigger.

I have a CZ 75B and three Glocks, a 26, a 21, and a 36, and they are all great guns, but lately I've been shooting a Springfield XD 45 Tactical and I have to admit that if I was to do it all over again, I'd have three XDs, a subcompact 9mm, a full-sized 9mm, and a full-sized .45 ACP, and one Glock (Springfield doesn't make anything comparable to the 36, which is my primary carry gun).

But I haven't shot the new Ruger, which feels great in my hand, or the S&W M&P, about which I have read nothing but good things. Before I bought anything I'd spend some serious range time with both guns. Who knows--I may like them better than the XDs, which I like better than my Glocks.

And I recommend you do the same. Any of these guns will last your lifetime, so you should make sure whatever gun you get is right for you. That's a lot more important than what any of us think.

"See if you can shoot an M&P. I became a convert once I pointed a rental downrange."
This is my experience as well. I do not own one currently. I have been looking at them for quite a while but went with the HK P2000, SIGP226, SIGP228, and G19 instead.

Just a few weeks ago I finally got around to shooting a rental fullsize M&P9. I was amazed at its accuracy, crisp break, immediate return after recoil, and pure shooting bliss. I spent the rest of the day analyzing the experience. I could not shut up - spent the whole day talking about it. It was easier to shoot accurately and at faster speed than my P226, P2000, and G19. (sold the P228).

Needless to say, I have caught the M&P bug and am eagerly awaiting the release of the M&P45c.

Considering that CDNN has the M&P9 for $399 in their catalog, and you get a $50 rebate check and 2 free mags from S&W - there is not a better value buy on the market - Period.
