How many AR mags is enough?

It depends. If you bought an AR to shoot 50 rounds a year when you feel like playing G.I. Joe, 2-3 should be fine.

If you plan on passing them down to your kids, competing as much as possible, use the rifle for defense, etc, I can see a reason to own at least a dozen per rifle. Because certain people hate that I can buy them, a few more simply to spite them is nice.

Either 6+1 or 9+1, depending on what you need them for. For a SHTF scenario, I'd go with 9+1 (three pouches of 3 plus one in the mag well) and extra ammo on ammo clips.

I keep extras around because like alot of folks mentioned, AR mags will wear out.

20+ And don't forget the AMMO on stripper clips already. If you don't have the ammo 10 will be enough...

I have about 20 AR mags, all different kinds. When I go to the range, I like to shoot, not load magazines.

I don't see myself getting in a firefight with the authorities any time soon. Or ever.

One is enough... More would be better, but too many is just an inconvenience.. I have several mags for different uses, but if I need more than 5, 30 round mags, a couple 20 rounders, and 10, and a 5 then I am dead already anyway...I will just try to take 205 of them with me...

12 AR's in inventory 150 mags, 5 AK 47' 50 mags 2 AK 74's 25 mags, 10 min per pistol. There is can never be enough mags or ammo. Rifle does'nt even make a good club, got to have ammo.

My full load has 8 on the belt in four pouches, plus one in a dump pouch and one in the rifle. I also have four 20 rounders for bench use though sometimes I'll carry one in competition if I think I may have to get in to a strange prone position where the shorter mag may be a better option.

Plus I have five spare 30's that I don't use, I may get five more someday.

Depends on whether you merely want enough to use, plus a couple spares, or if you are concerned that you won't ever be able to buy mags again and wish to have a lifetime supply.

AR mags as originally designed were intended to be semi-disposable, and hence were optimized for extremely light weight rather than durability. The downside of that is that they are unusually susceptible to damage, as rifle magazines go. Five or six AK magazines will last you decades longer than five or six AR magazines will, given constant use and similar treatment.

If you are spending a lot of money on mags preparing for SHTF...

Stop and make sure that you have a chest rig that will allow you to easily carry and access your magazines.

I bought a suitable mag vest for 12 bucks at a military surplus shop.

I'm running a crappy Blackhawk vest right now (got it real cheap) but will be buying a Tactical Tailor MAV.

While magazines are available and affordable the question you need to ask yourself is how many are you willing to buy?

If you own but one rifle then 50 isn't an unreasonable number and if you own More than one AR15 then 100 magazines isn't an unreasonable number.
This is my tub of loaded magazines.

I also keep 50 M14 magazines and 50 G3 magazines for the .308 rifles.

I currently have 2 20rnd, 2 30rnd, and 1 10rnd. Looking to buy 2-4 20rnd PMags and possibly 2 20rnd SS C-Products Mags. What are your thoughts on the C-Products? I am still undecided as some ppl say they are bad and others great.

I think the major makes are all okay, but I'm not an AR person. I have one AR and buy a mag and some beef jerky at every other gun show. Now I have a small collection of RRA, Brownell's, PMag and such and some more PMags on the way. I was ordering an UpLula pistol mag loader and TopGun had some PMags for $15.95. I mean really, my 15-round FNP-45 mags were $37 (not the usual $48), so the AR mags looked cheap.

I probably should have bought General Motors stock. It was up over 11% today and finished up 5%

I used the Pmags for about half my last tour and loved them. They're tough and reliable, and easy to load.
To clarify...I was asking about how good the C-Pro. mags were...I know that PMags are great I have em'

What do you buy the other times? A holster and a funnel cake? :neener:

3-AR's
1-Sig 556

30- 30 round mags
7- 20 round mags

I'm a little light on mags but I'm also dead broke cause I bought too many gunz. :scrutiny:

I do have some bulletz for em though, more than enough to fill those mags several times over.

I also have a 9mm AR that takes 32 round Sten mags. I do have 17 of them. 8 of em are still filled with cosmo but I do have em...

I don't really like my 9mm AR. I may sell it and buy another Hi-Point 995. I miss my Hi-Point 995. Thats what I had before I spent over a thousand dollars on that stoopid 9mm AR. The 995 was more fun.

I need a SLED for slowfire and 8 magazines for the rapid fire stages of High Power. So... 9, plus maybe 2 spares.
But, back when I was all "tactical" back in 1970, I carried 21 magazines loaded with 18 rounds each (and about 70 lbs of miscellaneous other gear).

NC-Mike, you don't own a gunshop do you? Just wondering I know a mike that owns one in NC. ;)

After following this thread I determined that 12 Mags wasn't enough for my 2 AR's and FS2000. So I ordered 30 more.--Darn you guys for causing me to spend more cash.

Now 1911 Mags I got those coming out my ears...
