How many of you carry a multitool?

I have a swiss army knife and a "Great neck" multitool. I should probably get a high qualiy multitool some day but this works for what i need most of the time.

You never know when you might need needle nose pliers or a screwdriver or knife.

I've been carrying this first-type Gerber (the one that can really pinch your palm if the pliers slips:cuss: ) since '93. It is very much my "right hand" day to day. Several years ago I tried to find another one like it but had no luck. Seems the first change made was to keep the handle from coming together. When this happened they also changed the type of pliers. I really like the pliers on this tool. They are very useful to me. Gerber was no help back then when I asked if I could get THAT exact plier jaw set from them. Do any of you have or know of one of these for sale? Mine's getting fairly worn and this thread reminded me there might yet be one "out there".

Josh, are you wanting regular pliers as opposed to needle nose?

You might look at the Gerber 400 and 600 models, though most appear to be needle nose.

Also see my evaluation of the 650 in the knife forum.

Leatherman Supertool & Wave

I own & use both. The Wave is a bit more user-friendly when using hte pliers, but the Supertool has the nice locking fold-out tools with camming action. The Wave has a scissors.

I'll also carry a Micra on occasion.

LAK,

Check out the Leatherman Blast. It's only 6.9oz and 4in closed, and carries a bit easier than my large SOG powerlock, or something like the very nice Leatherman Wave (8.5oz) ... (etc)
Thanks Doug; I bought my wife a Wave - very impressive overall. I'll check out the Blast too.

Thanks again.

Gotta have the gerber daily...if I leave it at home its like leaving the house without underwear...trust me they get you out of tight spots...

I used to carry a Gerber (full size). Once I changed jobs I didn't have much use for it. I switched to a small Leatherman Squirt P4 and my EDC knife.

The P4 is tiny but has proven itself to be quite handy and capable. I put a lanyard on it that came with my cell phone instead of putting it on my key chain and carry it in the pocket opposite my knife.

I got a little silly today, and returned the “Blast”. I came home with one of the new “Wave” models. The "Blast" was a fine tool, but I guess I was tempted by the "Wave" due to all of the postive reviews on this model. It is a very nice tool. I compared it to the “Core” which is a very heavy duty tool. It had all double beveled screwdrivers. It was just a little bigger than I wanted. I also liked the idea of the Wave taking the place of my folding knife for casual carry (because the exterior blades open one handed without opening the tool itself). One less thing in my pocket. Also ordered a 21 piece bit set for the Wave. The case has a pocket which will hold the bit set with the multitool.

I use my leatherman charge at least 7 times a day or so for work and hobbys. Recently the tip broke off while I was carving pine. They should probably use more of a spring steel instead of brittle 154cm if they want to continue making such a small blade.

I have one of the old original leatherman tools that I carry. Wouldn't want to build a house with it, but you never know when you need pliers or a screwdriver.

Sometimes I am a complete MORON. Usually just an incomplete one:eek: . I forgot the picture in my above posting! Sorry NMSHOOTER. Here is the one I'm looking for. It has a fairly unique pliers that I can't find so far. The thing that really like about them is the perfect fit on the model paint jar lids I use alot.

I have two leathermans. I don't know the model of either one of them. I keep one in the house which usually keeps me from having to go out to my building to get a tool for a minor job of some sort. The other is in my drybox for my boat. I have really no use for one for daily carry, but I will take the one from my drybox if I am going on any kind of extended outdoor outing.

649, looks just like the one on my hip.

Once I have evaluated the 600 I am getting I will consider selling you my NIB backup pair...:)

Yes, I have a spare multitool.;)

Doesn't everyone?:D

I carry a leatherman sideclip. It is light and thin and still does everything that I have needed it for. I use it probably a few times everyday. It is a don't leave home without it item.

Leatherman

I have carried a leatherman for 11 years, both at work (police officer), and in in my personal vehicle. I cannot tell you haow many times it has been used and for a multitude of things as simple as screwing my license plate on, to stripping speaker wire, etc. There are many out there to choose from, but I am partial to Leatherman.

Looks like I'm in the minority, as all I've ever carried and all I've ever needed is an old Swiss Army Knife (Vitrionox Engineer, I think).

I work in IT, and handle shipping/receiving, installation, and basic system maintenance of a fairly large colocation center and have never once found the humble Swiss Army knife wanting, and it gets alot of varied work in a day.

Leatherman? Pffft! As girly a tool as its name implies!

gfen, just stirring the pot...

I used to carry a SAK all the time. Stopped carring it when we got Leathermans at work (yes, my employer bought them  ), so right now i have a Super Tool (7 years old) and a Wave from work. Also a Micra that my Sister bought me. I had a Gerber (with the pliers that slide out of the handle) but didn't really like it as much.

Funny thing is, my old wave accompanied me through the building of 4 different houses. If you don't try anything stupid, like using a blade for a prybar, or using one of the blades when you should use a utility knife, leatherman tools will just keep right on working. And when you finaly do something stupid enough to break it, just send it to leatherman and they will send back a brand new one, and a newer model if your's was outdated.

A Leatherman Micra has ridden on one of my keychains for about a year-and-a-half now. I find that I really miss it and my Gerber folder when I'm on business trips that have required air travel where I've had to leave the blades behind...they're the first thing I look for when I'm back in the car!

A quick grooming tip: Unruly eyebrows? Give 'em a careful snip with the handy scissors on your multi-tool. Not that I've ever done that or anything...:)

Leatherman Juice. All the "bells and whitles" in a somewhat smaller pack. I can carry it in my pocket with no problem.

I carry a leatherman wave. Before that a leatherman PST and a SAK Tinker on a keychain. The tinker was handier for opening packages, and made a nice key fob. I got the Wave for the one hand blade opening. The Wave sheath, worn horizontal, looks just like a cell phone cover. I wear it often with dress clothes. If you use the wave, the only drawback I have found is that there is no reach on the screwdriver bit. Buy some 2" bit inserts and grind the end to fit. The long reach Phillips bit is probably the most used tool on the original models.:)

Being a soldier i carry one sometimes two multitools and a flashlight and two pocket knives. They are all issued however the one i wont be turning back in is the Leatherman Charge Ti with interchangeable bits. It has never failed or broken under stress. I use it for everything from fixing humvees to machinegun repair.

Whatever that new style Gerber is with the cast handles and the rubber inserts is what goes to work with me everyday now. I like the pliers and the good wire cutter on this model, plus the scissors will cut the braided fishing line I often use. Before that I carried a Leatherman Supertool and before that, the original Gerber that gave me blood blisters on my palm at least once a month. I'm lost without a multitool.
