i have a taurus g2c since december 2018, i have always cleaned it after i shoot it. i now am in a spot where i can't shoot for a while but still carry it, i always wipe the outside of gun off with oily cloth every night before putting it away. i carry my gun every day, so my question is how often should i break it down and reclean even when i am not shooting it? thanks for any help.

I like to shoot and recycle my carry ammo 3 or 4 times a year. I fire it all off (as a confidence builder), clean, and then reload.

If the gun is clean (or even not fouled with lots of shooting), a simple wipe down is all you need. I get wanting to take it down, blow out the guts, detail it, etc. However, if you keep it wiped down and exam it for any fuzz build up in the action or if you carry gun has a hammer every once in awhile, you'll be fine.

I don't religiously clean my guns. I have done far more damage to the finish and/or pins needlessly taking the gun apart over and over.

Here is my carry gun routine when I buy it:

Take it home and field strip it so that I can get used to it and/or look up any youtube tricks if it's a tricky one.
Clean it and lube it
Cycle the action/check for function, etc
Load it, chamber it, top of the mag, stick it in my holster and head to the range
Shoot the heck out of it
Head back home and clean it well before loading it up for carry.

I won't do more than a wipe down and visual inspection until I shoot it again. If I shoot it just a little, I'll probably just wipe it down some more and make sure it's not fouled up.

By a few of those $0.49 Rem Oil Disposable Wipe Packs at Academy an slip the wipe back in the pack after you use it. I usually change them out once a month. Rem Oil doesn't have much smell so it works well for that app.

I use LB8008 (C-5A) Loctite Antiseize (It's rated -30 to 1800F) on the rails and a few friction points. (Rumor is that's copper colored stuff Glocks have from the factory). I would clean once a year just because but a SW9VE Sigma so treated fired just fine after 10 years in a Buddy's Truck exposed to subzero to 100F+ and heat and air conditioning swings.

I tend to clean all my firearms after each range session, my Dad was ex- Navy and insisted all my gear was "ship shape". How do you carry your firearm? Pocket carry, in a holster, a fanny pack? Do you see pocket lint, or any signs of corrosion?
I would inspect and clean at least monthly, or if the weapon experiences harsh conditions.

Never. Wipe it off with an oily/greasy rag once in a while. I use RIG grease on a cloth.

I agree but I use G96 gun oil instead of RIG grease although there is nothing wrong with either of any quality oil/grease.

Personally, I wouldn't disassemble until after 500 rounds for it's break-in period.

This should allow for the sliding parts to wear in together.

Clean the bore, chamber and feed ramp until then after which then go for a full disassemble clean-up. Just my .02.

Best,

Ed

In my experience with 1911s (that like to run a bit wet), I have observe failures for insufficient lube after 2 months of carry. I solved this with better oil that won't run out, and grease for the rails. I would not recommend switching to grease without testing.

In your case: good oil that won't run out, and relube once a month.

Depends. What do you do for a living? I do tree work so my pistol is always getting covered in sawdust. I blow it out with a compressor every day or two. My brother works in an office so his doesn't need that kind of treatment nearly as often.

On carry guns I usually clean about once a month.

Doesn't consist of much. Unloading, disassembly, inspect, wipe down, line, reassemble, loading and back in the holster.

The round in the chamber is thrown in the pile to get shot the next range session. I usually shoot whatever is in the carry guns and reload it with fresh ammo anyway.

Like was said above. I wipe down occasionally with an lightly oiled rag, and more frequently blow the lint out. Other than that it stays in my holster to get removed at night and replaced on my belt in the morning. I try and avoid handling of it outside the holster when not necessary.

I agree with Walkalong. I do, however, run a lightly oiled patch down the barrel (unloading it first of course) once or twice a month.

I wouldn't recommend grease.

If it slides, use oil, if it rotates then use grease.
