Not to pick on PG11 or his fine lady, but I didn't want to let the teachable moment pass, because the example is so striking.

Scroll up to the pictures w/ post #125, and you'll see a fairly common mistake, which is most frequently seen done by the fairer sex.

Lennyjoe's youngest is doing the same thing in #135, and I'm sure I can scroll around this thread for more.

The first thing that most people see is the pronounced backwards lean. If you look closer, however, what you'll see is that she's leaning backwards to compensate for lack of upper body strength because she's fully extended her service sized pistol all the way out, locking her elbows. If you squint properly, you'll see that the backwards lean is centering the mass defined by 2 lbs of metal in her hands, and her shoulders.

Ladies, unlock those elbows, and bring your sidearm in a little closer. Your center of mass will shift to something more reasonable, your shoulders won't be sore, because they'll no longer be the fulcrum of your personal biomechanical shooting machine, and you'll also find that you're recoil will be properly absorbed and distributed.

geekWithA.45 is right.

If your already fully extended back when you shoot that shotgun, it's going to hurt a lot. Because it has no where to go, your body can't absorb the impact.

Same the pistols, less painful, but still not good.

Wifey and "Her" collection

My wife with last years B-Day present. Thought it would make a nice upgrade from the Taurus I bought her a few years ago. I bought a POF 18" predator rifle last month.....so she requested the ownership of my other AR :) ... DPMS , JP trigger, Troy ind quad rail....16" HB. Only downfall of your wife becomming a shooter ?.....My ammo budget has doubled. Thank god for the reloader. THRHK.JPG

Nope, Arizona. A free state where shooting out in the country is still allowed.

geekWithA.45, you are correct. I've broke her of that posture since them photo's were taken. My wife was doing the same but I've since broke her as well.

Marshaldodge,
I hate to be the one to break it to you, But after seeing the picture of your wifes target,I think that kimber is HERS!:)

Re: The Stance. Went shooting last weekend with a bunch of new-ish shooters, and two of the three females and three of the males were using that "left foot forward, right foot back, arms locked out, lean waaaaaay back" stance.

I kept thinking of something I once heard an instructor say (not to me, of course): "Go ahead and lean back as far as you want, but your face won't get any farther away from the gun."

like someone pointed out, most females without adequate upper body strength do in fact tend to "lean" back to compensate for the weight of the gun.

I never paid much attention to that until now.

geek ~

I don't have tremendous upper body strength, and that's why I lock my elbows. I do not lean back; quite on the contrary, I use Ayoob's "Stressfire" Isosceles stance which is very aggressively forward. I love to keep my elbows locked as I lean into the gun because I can feel the recoil go straight through my skeleton into the ground. Using this stance, it requires no muscle to realign the firearm immediately after recoil and make really fast follow up shots. In contrast, the unlocked elbows stances all require me to use the upper body strength I don't have, to absorb the recoil and then muscle the gun back onto the target after each shot.

Well, as you point out, Pax, leaning back is "faux isosceles". ;)

I go back and forth on it. In the spirit of your Cooper quote, I've never been pedantic about stance, because you + your gun = unique biomechanical shooting machine, and reality wins over holy writ each and every time, so whatever works best for you wins.

On the other hand, I dislike fully extended defensive shooting positions, because the odds are really good it's going to be at close range, and the need for retention is, IMO, something we all underestimate.

But maybe that's just me, whose aikido sensibilities inhibit me from getting that close to the edge of my balance.

geek ~

Understood the comment about balance, and my danzan ryu experience agrees with your aikido sensibilities. But I need to note that Stressfire Iso is actually very balanced, no matter how it appears in photos. The weight is neatly centered on the balls of the feet. With feet shoulder wide & a half-stride apart, and hips lowered, this gives an amazingly stable base for your shooting turret. Movement in any direction is inherently easy, too, which is why you'll see football players and other athletes using the same basic techniques when they need to be stable but also remain mobile.

Side benefit for gimps like me: that agressively forward stance with weight on the balls of the feet is much (much!) easier on the muscles in the small of your back than most of the upright stances.

Indeed. When I was working on pistol stance with my GF, I kept telling her to "Lean forward and stick yer butt out!"

She rolled her eyes at me, but it worked.

Just got in from a week or so with my Girlfriend and her parents. We're home for my sister's wedding. We had been on the road for a few hours and had just unloaded everything. I picked up my saiga to adjust and tighten the scope, as well as put some batteries in it so the illumination would work. I set it down on the bed while. When I looked back, someone had gotten snug on my bed. The picture was too perfect.
