I carry hardball in the woods and sometimes in the second magazine. I usually use whatever is on sale usually Speer, UMC, S&B or Federal American Eagle. My LW Commander doesn't exhibit a preference of one brand of hardball over another.
I stay away from PMC and the real cheap stuff.
I'd probably use TZZ hardball ammo by IMI. Rock River Arms uses it for accuracy testing their hardball bullseye guns because it is the most consistently accurate.
Random note, if I couldn't use hollowpoints for legal reasons I'd use flat-point or semi-wadcutter (either FMJ or hardcast) instead of round-nosed hardball.
I like Sellier & Bellot, becasue the red lacquer line around the case mouth and bullet gives me a good visual mark to check for bullet setback in rounds that were chambered. Also, it's just about the least expensive ball ammo in my shop, and it's been 100% reliable in my guns.
That said, right now I have more UMC around than anything else. It's just so convenient to pick up a box or two every time I hit Walmart with the SO.
I have used just most anything over the years. That said a few things seem consistent in my personal observations through a variety of handguns. Understand a couple of things for me personally I started and stayed with the same platforms. K frames, 1911 style and BHP...that is not to say I don't shoot others, these are my preferences. Another is even tho' Big Green has an ammo plant about an hour as the crow flies...I grew up on Winchester...everthing. That said...be surprised. This is FMJ as requested...in order of preference.
Fiocchi FMJ across the board gives me what I want.
Fed Classic ( C45A especially)
Winchester.
The sleeper of the bunch is Black Hills...I really like but I need to shoot more of it.
I'll carry FMJ's as backups to my regular hollowpoint carry ammo (in case I have to punch a hole THROUGH something in order to punch a hole IN something... ). So far, S&B's been good ammo--esp. the 158gr. FMJ flat-points in .38SPL & .357MAG. Great penetration there...
If I can find some, I'd like to get some 9mm NATO ammo (124gr. FMJ +P+) as my "backup" ammo. But I think most of it is being used right now by people who need it more than me...
Only gun I carry hardball in is my keltec p-32. All of my 9mms get gold dot hollowpoints. In the p-32 I carry fiochi 73 grain bullets, and ahve been very impressed with the accuracy, recoil, and power of this small cartridge. The .32 with hardball will never be my first choice for a grab and go gun, but is great for when the only other choice is to be unarmed.
I don't carry hardball , but if I did it would be Hornady 230 FMJ/FP .
I like the flat point design . I've used it on solid targets and compared to round nose , it seems to transfer energy with more authority . I had no way to measure , but the targets dropped "faster" . IMO .
