First of all, great question. I like this one much better than a five gun or 3 gun or 1 gun question. Those always make people assume the world is ending or something. Which, if I was only allowed one gun, it very well may be.

No AR-15. Just not a fan but certainly do not have a problem with those that enjoy them. In the super tiny remote chance I actually need a combat rifle for actual combat I suppose the Mini14 would work just fine. I do believe it prudent enough to have a few 30 round mags. You know, just in case.

Also, I would only require the 22's, the Savage 24, the Defender, the airweight 38, the 19, and the 30-30 to actually be for shooting. And the mini 14. I would prefer the rest to be safe queens. Especially the revolvers. I want them vintage, mint, and untouchable.

Good thread

The first gun I ever bought is a Sig 1911 stainless carry model; it covers all my "needs", everything I've bought since has been a want. I don't hunt and I live in an apartment, so my no hunting rifles and my "home defense weapon" is a machete (I'd be really, really hesitant to fire any gun in this place. Unlike bad guys I have to worry about where the rounds end up).

So my list in chronological order of purchase looks like:

Sig 1911
Beretta 92FS
M1A
CMMG dedicated 22LR upper on a RRA lower
Walther P22
M1 Garand
Sig 556
CAI AK-74

At this point I realized I was really only shooting the 22LR pistol and rifle, about the only centerfire shooting I was doing was at work where I'm not paying for the ammo. I also realized there were some nice cheap and available C&R guns out there, and I'd always been a history buff. So my next purchases were:

a second 22LR upper so I could have one scoped and one with irons (doesn't really count as another gun)
M1895 Nagant revolver (which is incredibly fun to shoot, and 32S&W isn't too bad on price)
CZ82
Yugo SKS
Mosin 91/30

The Nagant, SKS, and Mosin got to me in absolutely excellent/like new condition. I just got the Mosin two weeks ago and am very, very happy with the stock on it, thing practically looks like it was made yesterday even though it's dated 1931.

So I own 12 and I've got a 22LR Marlin 25N bolt action that the mother-in-law left with me for safekeeping and said I could shoot all I want. Really the only guns I'd want now short of a M4A1 (which I couldn't afford anyway thanks to that d-bag Hughes) would be a 22LR revolver, a 22LR conversion for my Beretta (which isn't even really another gun), and I guess anything cheap and available that pops up on the milsurp market, say a TT-33 Tokarev for example.

I have yet to sell any guns and don't plan on it.

Something tells me that if you could pick any twenty guns you wanted, and then were given the option to swap them for something else, you would end up with a very different collection in just a few years. I have owned all sorts of guns that at the time I though I just had to have but after using them for a while decided that I wanted something else.

Perhaps.

My collection probably would not be very different in a few years. Some things might change, sure, but many of them wouldn't be going anywhere.

The first three guns I ever had are still with me and are on the list I posted. And if I had to cut the list down to 10, they would still be there. Actually, I think that if I cut the list to a mere 5...those 3 would be there. And not for sentimental reasons, but because they are exactly what I need/want, and that is very unlikely to change.

All right. Let's see here.
I don't own many of these, but this is the minimum I intend to get my collection to eventually.

When I first saw this post, I thought it was pretty silly as the nth iteration of 'if you only had n...', but seeing the results and noting the distribution of guns by type (shotguns, rifles, etc.) is proving interesting. I'll take a shot, but realize that I'm left-handed so my choices are pretty constrained.

Handguns
1. H&K P7 M13 (9mm) (I'll take two of these)
2. H&K P7 M8 (9mm)
3. H&K P7M10 (40 S&W)
4. H&K USP Compact V2 LEM Lite trigger (left hand) (9mm)
5. Glock 26 (9mm)
6. Diamondback DB9 (9mm) pocket pistol
7. Desert Eagle (50AE)
8. H&K P7 K3 (.22LR and .32ACP - but counts as one)
9. Benelli M95E Atlanta .22LR Ambi

Rifles

10. Tikka S3 Sporter LH .308
11. FNH SCAR 17H .308
12. Kel-Tec RFB .308 Ambi Bull Pup
13. Stag Arms 3GL LH .223/5.56
14. FNH FS2000 .223/5.56 Ambi Bull Pup
15. Sako 85 Hunter LH 30-06
16. H&K MP5 SBR Carbine or H&K94 (if no SBR) (9mm)
17. Anschutz 1416D LH .22LR
18. Stag Arms/CMMG AR Carbine LH .22LR

Shotguns

19. Browning BPS All-Weather 12 Gauge (20" barrel) (tactical marine finish)
20. Browning BPS Engraved Receiver 12 Gauge (28" barrel)

First time I ever put together a list like this. Pricey but it's something to aspire to.

My collection for life would be pretty boring.
5-1911 .45's
5- Benelli Super 90 Shotguns.
5-AR-15's in 6.8SP
5- electics

I'm 69 years old and my "Top Twenty" list has evolved to these after a whole lotta playing in the bush. Each selection has a carefully prepared (but omitted) explanation of "why". And I should add that each section is listed in order of preferance.

Ruger Single Six 22/22mag 9 1/2" bbl

Centerfire Rifles: (here, the top three are difficult for me to rank - they're that close as essentials IMO)
Marlin 45-70 Guide Gun
Rossi Puma 92 44mag Trapper
Ruger 77 RSI 308 - came factory equipped with iron sights & scope rings
Marlin 44 mag Cowboy
Springfield M1A 308 Nato

Most of these are simply because they are unique. Tho as I made this list I felt like the only other person with a similar list would be someone who spends too much time with video games.

I HAVE limited myself to 10 guns lifetime.

And I already have them.

Pistols
9mm STI Sentry 1911 + Tactical solutions 22lr conversion kit + aimpoint micro
45ACP Colt Combat Elite
45 ACP Colt Wiley Clapp Commander
45 ACP Smith and Wesson 22-4
9mm Smith and Wesson M&P pro
38 Special 2" model 10

Rifles
AR15 Carbine
Ar15 Rifle DMR / Service Rifle
AR15 Rifle 1/12 3 gun / 22lr suppressed upper

Shotgun
Remington 870

Done and.... Done.

A bit different than the usual question so I will play.

Rifles
I love rifles. To me they tend to fall into hunting and self defense. I socially shoot with both. By having a limit of 20 weapons total, I'm likely going to skip super specialized weapons.

Self defense - I would start with just one kind of rifle, the M1a in 7.62 NATO.
Hunting - i like compact hunting rifles. I don't plan to shoot beyond 200 yards. I'd go with a 30-30 lever action Marlin and a Ruger 77 compact in 308. Both would have irons and scout style scopes.

Shotguns - I use these for clay shooting and self defense. I like 12 gauge. I could easily get by with a Mossberg 500 wood stock, forearm and screw in choke. Te second would be a Mossberg 590 with ghost rings.

Pistols - These are tools. For a back up hunting weapon I would have a Ruger revolved 44 magnum. For semi autos I could live with a Glock 30 and 21 in 45 ACP. Just for the heck of it, I will also get a 45 acp Sig 220 in stainless with nice wood handles.

22 rim fire
Gotta have some of these. I'd want an older Marlin 39 lever action, a Ruger 10-22 ( likely the takedown model) and a Ruger 22 pistol (the one that is more like the 1911 but I forget what it is called).

So, the total is 12 firearms. For now I will hold there. I could come up with ways of expanding but I would wait for quite a lint time before buying more.

1. Cabot south paw 1911
M1911s are one of the most common built semi auto pistols, but choosing one isn't that hard. Being left handed I have to adapt to most guns, even with ambi safeties.
south_paw_composition.jpg

Hk p2000sk
I love hk build quality and ergonomics. Ambi everything and concealable.

lg_p2000sk.jpg

Masterpiece arms protector 380
Super compact pistol with weight to manage the recoil. Can't CC without a tiny pistol
mpa.jpg

Imi galil sa
Regardless to its weight, its reliability can not be shaken, I would add a hk mr556 stock and ergo grip and call it a day.
517galilc.jpg

Keltec ksg and rfb
As stated above I am a lefty, and even though I love bullpup designs, most eject brass right into the face of a left handed shooter. Keltecs bull pup rifle ejects rounds out the front, and the shotgun ejects them down.

Rfb compared to fan fal

Not done yet just want to post what I got so not to loose it

Here's my 20 for today. Ask me again last week, and I could easily come up with a different list.

Handgun
1 Glock 21, 45 ACP
2 Glock 19, 9mm
3 Kahr P380
4 S&W 686, 4”, .357 Mag
5 S&W 629, 5”, .44 Mag
6 S&W 638, 1 7/8”, .38 Spl

Centerfire Rifle
7 Armalite AR10A4, 7.62mm
8 Colt SP6940, 5.56mm
9 Marlin 336, .30-30
10 Marlin 1894SS, .357 Mag.
11 Shilo-Sharps 1874 Sporter #3, 34”, .45-70
12 Winchester Model 70 Sporter, 25-06 Win
13 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade, .30-06 Win

Shotgun
14 Remington 870, 18 ½”, 12 gauge
15 Beretta Silver Hawk Featherweight, 28”, 20 gauge
16 Savage 24C, .22 LR/20 gauge

Rimfire
17 Ruger 10/22 Take Down, .22 LR
18 Savage Magnum 93BTVS, .22WMR
19 S&W 617, 3”, .22 LR
20 Ruger Mk II Competition, 6.88”, .22 LR

Warp, the one thing I notice your list is missing is a proper hunting rifle. Sure the M1a or 357 lever could be used. However, would you really want to go the rest of your life without one? Also, do you really want to choose all 20 now? I don't think firearms really change all the much but your tastes over time may change. Just out of interest in the thread I challenge you to cut out 5 to leave room for other things at a later date. It's mean in good fun. Ya know, the kind of conversation we would have at a campfire. Your list is a good one.
