I looked at the rifling in his bore, and it reminded me of Marlin's micro-groove, which seems to clog up quickly with lead, so I thought the Sierra HP would be a good starting bullet. It was only about 50% higher than lead when he was on Midway. Still WAY under factory ammo prices. And yes, I understand that accuracy trumps velocity, especially with a hammer like the .45-70. Again, this is a new caliber for me, and I appreciate everything you have said, as well as others. Are my concerns on the shallow rifling and lead unfounded?Well then, just for killing paper, you are wasting expensive bullets and extra powder. Even a 300gr Cast Bullet will kill deer and bear too at fairly low velocities.
There is no need to push a 300gr JHP bullet to 1850 fps to kill paper or deer. Load up some Trapdoor type ammo from the Lyman manual, find an accurate load and call it good even if it's below 1850 fps.
