Is It Time To Stockpile Ammo?

I’d buy some now if you think you’ll want or need it. If you’re planning to buy a new Glock or a new Ruger Marlin during the upcoming year… buy some ammo to go with it now.

I am of the opinion that we should be adding to our loaded ammo personal reserves, not playing spray-n-pray games and leaving the ground glittering with spent brass. A global conflagration is a real possibility, and there won't be recreational shooting if it happens.

My two 21y/o grandsons and two of their friends came out a week ago to do some shooting. They went through more ammo in two hours than I burn in a year and thought nothing of it. When they got done shooting all of theirs and too much of mine I asked them how much do they have at home. They looked dumbfounded and said they just go to Scheels and buy what they're going to shoot a given day.

I'm not advocating hoarding, just some judicious buying. I think a well thought out plan to accumulate 22LR, 38 Spl, 9mm, 223, and 308 ammo is something most of us should consider. Watch for sales and pick up a few boxes of what you shoot. With China pressing forward against Taiwan, Russian aggression, and the Middle East fuse now lit on that powder keg chances of a black swan flying are all to real.

What ammo should each of you consider buying more of, bearing in mind it might never again be plentiful and affordable?
Ammo sales person starting trouble

I’m 60 now, retired, and not all that healthy. I bought ammo and reloading components as I could afford pretty steadily since the Clinton AWB and I have a basement full of stuff “just in case.”

I’m starting to think I need to start burning through some of it if for no other reason than to make it easier on my wife to get rid of my stuff when I die.

It’s always time to buy ammo. I’ve been buying ammo and/or reloading components once per month for two years. It has helped me get an amount that would be impossible if I tried to get everything in one big purchase.

I’m debating if I want to make a second purchase this month due to the fear mongering from Sgammo that I’m falling victim to, unfortunately.

This ought to be tempered, at least in my opinion, by restricting ourselves to shopping smartly. And Shopping for ourselves, not for others' notions of what constitutes "enough."

We cannot ignore the very real and very present, effect of inflation on the goods we buy. Given current inflation trends, there's merit in spending current cash before it can devalue further. Now, that's also a very esoteric Economic argument, too. And, it wants consideration as it can be like driving 20 miles out of one's way to save 1¢ per gallon on gasoline.

And, while OP's notion has the virtue of prudence, we ought not let parsimony "get in the way" of necessary training and skills retention. These latter may look like one is "burning" ammo in a non-frugal sort of way, but, there's a very real adage about how "shot placement" will trump "shot size." So, "burning" a box to get one's group size 10% or 15% smaller, is well worth the cost. That being "more sure" about where POI will be, is a great and real boon.

Like as not, we all ought be loading ammo, and buying it, too--but, we ought not shop badly, and pay in excess if we do not have to. And, this is especially true for bulk buys online, where the cost of shipping often "steals" all economy out of the "buy."

IMO there won't be any shooting of consequence. If you know what really hits the fan, there'll be mushroom clouds in the sky and your best bet is to hope you're at ground zero of one of them vs being an unlucky survivor and dying a much slower death.

I shoot my guns and I've also sold off some of 'em along with mags and ammo. Heck, I sold off all my 7.92x57mm. Made a pretty penny off that Turkish stuff I bought cheap.

The societal collapse my family experienced in Cuba says nukes was the least of their concerns.

The conflicts of the Balkans, MENA, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa say nuclear conflicts are not the major killer of people.

I'm sorry to hear about that, but America is not Cuba/Latin America/etc to say the least. If one is living there, then yeah I get the hoarding.

So far.

Again my point if that if thinks really fall apart globally, having lots of gun n ammo aren't likely to matter.

Romans once said the same thing too. They thought their society would never collapse.

We've already had societal collapse in the US. McDuffy Riot, Rodney King Riot, Hurricame Andrew, Hurricane Katrina, the 2020 Summer of Love, lawlessness in a number of cities, etc...

Heck, it was Sherman who burnt Atlanta to the ground.

Anyways, I'm not worried about a nuke strike. I am worried about another hurricane. I recall the looting that happened after Andrew. I witnessed it first hand.

The US can go to hell and the rest of the world will suffer, but go right on by and survive.

I am allways picking up a box of this or box of that. And have the stuff I enjoy shooting alot like rimfire and my carry pieces that I make sure to have plenty for shooting and plenty if I ever need to do any SHOOTING. I don't have 20 thousand rounds for each caliber but I keep enough in stock so I can shoot what I want when I want and still be able to fight if and when need arises. I got caught with my rimfire pants down during obama when you couldn't find a box nowhere unless it was 4 times the price. I still had few thousand rounds but was scared to do much shooting cause it was irreplaceable. Since then I make sure to have more rimfire ammo then anything else. Worst part is the shelves wouldn't ever be empty if it wasn't for the guys who here "shortage" and run out to every local store and buy every box and the scalpers who get every box they can so they can flip it for profit. Its allways a man made shortage mainly from panic buying.

You forgot Ferguson, Missouri and the lunacy in Seattle...

If you're talking about such localized things, that's one thing. But if we're talking about a country-wide American collapse...tbh I don't think there's any point going back and forth on that any further as we clearly have differing viewpoints and you're entitled to yours no more or less than I, but neither of us will convince the other. Suffice it to say I think if this country collapses, the reverberations and net result will be to put your head between your knees and kiss it all good-bye. This "New World Order" and Mad Max stuff is the stuff of movies, not reality.

I buy it cheap and stack it deep not for the end of the world. But because ammo is a commodity and costs rise and fall. I buy it when prices are low, so when times are tough. I can go shooting and not spend a ton of money doing it. As an example, I'm still shooting Norinco boxed 7.62x39mm that was imported when Clinton was president. I haven't purchased 7.62x39mm in a VERY LONG TIME.

Those riots are what brought on the popularity of the AR 15 . And HRC.
Move to tornado ally. Less teeth and claws. We just hit the ditch.

I started stockpiling when Hillary was running for President. In fact, I know all my UPS drivers by their first names and feel obligated to send them Christmas cards...

If you haven't been stockpiling for a while, you're way behind the curve.

My only concern is, I'm facing a cross-country move within the next year and will probably have to rent an extra big truck. Or two.

Maybe the invasion will occur first. I've been stockpiling the beer and bourbon too, so if any of you don't have other plans... Got two big grills, on a well and septic, got a powerful generator, access to a lotta beef and a bunch of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood DVDS (as well as every season of Miami Vice on Blu-Ray).
