Ithaca 37 questions

Yes, Ithaca did make nickel-plated Model 37s; I've seen a number of Deerslayers that were nickeled, and they also made a number of other models with nickel as an option (Military & Police), and even some with matt chrome as an option.

Featherweight 20ga

I walked into my local gunshop this afternoon. Always looking for Model 37's.
They had just taken in a 1963 Featherweight 20ga. 95%+ metal and wood; and unmolested. Mint bore. Not even a recoil pad. S.N. 862xxx. Old flourescent bead sight the extent of upgrade. Plain 28" modified choke 2 3/4" only barrel. I about fainted. Tagged $395.00; got it for $350.00. So light I thought it was a .410. (I had to read the barrel to determine the gauge) If I hadn't recognized the receiver engraving I would have thought it a Model 42 Win at a glance. This is going to be my chukar/huns gun for steep terrain. Wow! I'm still shaking...
I let a beautiful 37 deluxe slip through my hands 20 years ago. (bought it and resold it an hour later for the profit)
I'm hanging on to this beauty.
What else do I need to know about this little treasure? I found the year through diamond gunsmithing website.:)

Deerslayer Help??

I have the old SN charts, but I'm still not sure about an M37 Deerslayer #3716015xx I have. It should be 1975 or '76, but my chart shows nothing in that specific range.

Can anyone shed any light? The gun apears to be a standard deerslayer in 12 ga., sort barrel, rifle type barrel mounted open rear sight, triangular shaped 'raybar' front sight, no rib. Blued, and the barrel finish appears nicely ground, not polished - very similar to the receiver sides in finish.

It is in very near mint condition. Has impressed checkering of sorts on a routine grade walnut stock and forend, no recoil pad.

oh, there i am! i need info with the mfg. year on a Ithaca Model
37, 20 ga. modified choke, pat # 1849982. serial # 109299.

Model 37 Featherlight

Hi,

I was wanting to know what year my 37 was made, the serial # is 748357. I looked on Diamond Gunsmithing's website and it said 1946. I just want to confirm. Thanks for the help.

I've got a Rem. Mod 17 (Rem sold the Browning design to Ithaca in '37) 20 ga. it is the smoothest pump it have ever shot. With the hammer cocked and the barrel pointed up if you hit the bolt release, the slide runs all the way back! Its been shot for 80 years and it is still tight!! It makes my 870 seem clunky.

New to the shotgun world. My dad has left me a model 37R 12 guage. Serial # 309746, 30" barrel. It appears to be in very good condition with minor scratches from the pump action and some minor wear on the upper receiver. Judging from the earlier threads I'm guessing it was manufactured in the late 40s, early 50s. Is that correct? Anything special about this gun?

your solid ribbed 37R was made in 1950...and yes there is something very special about it...it was your Fathers...

I remember going out bird hunting with him when I was 12-13. Brought home quite a few dinners.

Thanks

Ed

Didn't want to resurrect the Ithaca 37 Defense shotgun thread from back in Dec '08, so bumping this instead.

Does anyone have any idea why the current Ithaca Defense 37 has no support for the mag tube? Is that an accident waiting to happen, or are folks fretting over nothing?

Kinda reminds me of the old Colt revos with no shroud for the ejector. So horrible design flaw or not a big deal? Like other THR folks have stated, I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks more for a WWI-esque heat shield and bayo lug...

I ask because I'm vaguely considering moving from Arlington VA to DC proper (up on the Green Line) to take advantage of the housing market, but if I do, due to DC's terrible gun laws, I'll be leaving most of my guns (especially the NFA items) and just registering one revolver and one shotgun with the DC Metro police. My Stevens sXs 20ga isn't an actual serious HD piece, so I figure if I'm only going to register one DC-legal HD long-arm, might as well be an Ithaca with the spiffy downward ejection.

I think this new model has the barrel fixed to the receiver for added rigidity of the firing components. That would not allow the original method of a 90 degree twist of the barrel to clear the mag tube. Not sure why they didn't come up with some alternative means of support, but there seems to be a lot of chatter about this new model, must be something good about it.

You've actually got it backwards. The Magazine tube supports the barrels on removeable-barrel guns. Since it's a fixed barrel, the magazine tube can be free-floating. Ithaca originally developed this system for slug guns. MUCH more accurate that way. In reality, since the Ithaca bolt and carrier come out from the rear of the receiver, a takedown barrel is only a luxury needed for packing the gun. Takedown guns are not in vogue today and are really silly on a gun with an 18 or 20" barrel. Enjoy the slug accuracy.

M37 questions

Great thread, just spent a couples hours going thru it. I was just given a M37 and am trying to figure out its background. The s/n is 371692672 ( should be an '81 year) 2 3/4, 12 Ga. The grips are Pachmayer presentation pistol grip with macthing slide grip. Written in ink, on both the gun and the pistol grip, at the seem is VK1596. Does this mean anything? Has a 20" barrel with one ball sight at end of barrel and a 7+1 cap.. Finish is an OD green color which needs some resto, is this a blueing, parkerizing etc. finish? There are no DS or MP markings however it does have the standard duck scene engraving either side. Is this a production setup gun? Any pics or info of one would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the board.

Your gun is not a production setup. Ithaca bought their pistol grips and plastic stocks from Choate. They were really uncomfortable. The Pachmeyr grip and forend are hard to come by and can fetch a pretty penny.

Hi,

I found my dads model 37 and plan to rebuilt it. It must be one of the originals. It has serial # 58XX. Any of the date of birth?
