Kinda into rimfires right now. Fun and cheap to shoot with ammo prices the way they are. I have two CZ 452s, a taurus 62, and a Ruger 10/22. All good guns and fun to shoot. I was thinking about a Marlin model 60. Kinda like the tubular magazine and have heard really good things about the model 60 (except for the crappy trigger). Also one of the really iconic rifles that I don't have. Wally World here has one in stainless with a stndard wood stock. The barrel looks quite heavy compared to my 10/22. Is that the standard barrel for the model 60? Anyway, I would really appreciate any input regarding this. Also considering the little semi-auto from Thompson, but it does cost quite a bit more and has (I think) only about an 8 shot mag. Thanks.

I have nothing bad to say about the Model 60. It's iconic for a reason. However, just to present another option, check out the Biathlon Basic. There are a lot of threads at Rimfirecentral.com in the Russian forum. It would probably be my favorite 22 if not for the emotional attachment to my Remingtons. ;)

is there any difference between a marlin model 60, and a model 795, other than the 795 being clip fed instead of having a tubular magazine? I have a model 60 and love it, but I kinda want a clip fed .22

I have a marlin 60 straight shooter, trigger sucks a little, My next purchase is a Thompson or CZ

I rather like the Stevens Model 87, but I am likely alone in my assessment. It has not been made in years, probably decades, but has some neat quirks that I think a rimfire connoisseur would appreciate. It is semi-auto but will not release the bolt and chamber the next round until the trigger is released and you can lock the bolt closed and cycle it manually (making it a single shot...or somewhat of a bolt action). Like the Marlin M-60 it has a relatively long barrel (24"), is tube fed (18+1), but unlike the M-60 it is much more unusual and has neat slots milled into the left side of the receiver. :)

I agree that the Marin 60 would be a good addition to your collection.

Let me suggest a few others that I really enjoy.

BRNO #1 Sporter (bolt action)
Remington 572 (pump action)
Henry Golden Boy (lever action)
Marlin 39a (lever action)
Any old bolt action Remington, Winchester, Marlin, Stevens etc.

Bill,
How accurate is that 981? I've kind of wanted a scoped tube mag fed 22 for a while, but I can't find a Rem 512 with a grooved receiver or a Rem 582. (Obviously I'm a Remington guy.) But the 981 seems to fit all of my qualification.

I think you will find the 981 and the mod 60 equal in accuracy; if there is an edge i will give it to the 60. I have shot so many of both over the years, and this is just my opinion. Also the stainless is a nice model, with good sights as well, are they not? firefly type? the 60 bbl is a bit thicker than a 10.22, but not by much- has a very slow taper to it. The 60 has been made continuously ssince...well... 1960, and before that, it was the 99, and it's variants. Mostly all steel, steel receiver, walnut wood, fancy italian swivels- like that.
So it has been a long time semi auto, and is done very well, from an accuracy and reliability standpoint. the 981, has been around even longer, it has been the model 80 and 81, since about 1935 or 37. The DL version came out in 38, then they stopped making any rimfires during the war years, and immediately started back up, in either 44 or 45.
The older 80/81's could fire short, long and long rifle, and with the dl version, you got a killer peep sight.
If you wanna get either version, new, go right ahead, they will both be great.
if not, get used, an 81 dl, the older the better, preferably before microgrooved bbls; they just have a cool factor to them.
As for a used mod 60, look for one made between 85 and 88, the holygrail years. They had a 22 inch bbl, and a feed tube that went almost to the end of the bbl. It will hold 17 or 18 rounds in the tube, and these years also had the Last Shot BHO lever. These 3 years were the only years the mod 60, had the lever, and the long feed tube, with the long bbl.
new ones look similar, and have a feed tube pretty close to the end of the bbl, but the bbl is only 19 inches long, plus instead of the very cool and comfortable half moon shaped bolt lever, the new ones use what looks to be a knurled bolt handle for the bolt. Yecch in my opinion.

How does the new model differ from the 452?
The following was shamelessly stolen from RimfireCentral:

Had a long chat with CZ-USA today. The CZ 452 is being discontinued and will be replaced by the 455. The first 455 will be introduced in January. The first introduction will be with the new 455 American. The new 455 will feature standardized dimensions across all rimfire model lines of the 455 series read .22 LR and Magnums. Manufacturing tolerances will be better than even the current series of CZ’s. The action of the 455 will feature two action screws. One in the front of the receiver and one in the tang. The floating dovetail stanchion used on the current Americans will replaced by the new tang action screw. The new action screw design in the prototypes featured allen head type screws. The barrel lug with screw will be history (thank god!)

The excellent hand lapped barrels will still be utilized. Some consideration is being made to make swapping barrels and calibers easier. CZ was vague on the specifics of this change.

The trigger is still a single lever trigger but varies in appearances from the present trigger.

There will be a 456 out later to replace the present 453.
Looks like the 452 is safe till the end of the year, when the new models (which promise to be an improvement) are scheduled to be introduced. :)
