Just FYI, the 2 96 scores up are about on par with what you'd have to shoot slow fire prone to win a very competitive CMP vintage or modern military match if your offhand and rapid scores were up as well, and would get you well into the silver cut scores, flirting with gold. We're giving you a high bar, but you can get there!
Well, I said I'd give a report from the Finnish Front, and so I shall. Took advantage of severe cold and winds to infiltrate behind Soviet lines. Was just warm enough to get them out of their bunkers for a bit of scouting today. Left ski tracks across a patrol route, then doubled back on my trail to some spruce trees and waited in ambush at 100m from behind a curtain of upturned roots. They should have stayed in the bunker and faced the Komisar's Tokarev. That's how we used to write up "after actions" in our military matches on SR.com. Added a bit of fun to getting out and shooting these historic weapons.
Did better than I thought I would, but not as well as I could have, luckily for the group. Did some winter component cleanup and slapped together a load with 108 Barnes Frangible, 51 IMR 4064 and some well used Serbian brass destined for the scrap heap. Couldn't get a proper zero, had to hold above the black with the sight set at 300m. Not conducive to precision. The rifle liked the load though, need to tweak the zero and charge, see if I can get it to land on an even yardage notch. Ran 96-2x, prone in the snow. Sling was too short for the heavy coat I had on, but the 6" of dry, grainy snow made a pretty solid position. Working on pictures. -9F air temp at time of shooting. Rifle is a '43VKT M39 in 7,62x54R. Never thought about a tie. Right now Maxxhavoc is in the lead with more 10's. I think his m14 is class 1, not national match.

very good group , just low. Had it been in the black it would probably toward the top in winning.second gun, class 2, Winchester M94 in 30-30, Hornady 150 gr American Whitetail
couldn't see sighters, so took my best guess and blazed away - cold and just wanted to go home

not a bad group, considering all, but not in a good location
oh well, next time.....
Al considered, great shootingI think this is a 90-1x. If a shot breaks a scoring ring does it receive the higher value automatically, or does it have to be more than half in the higher ring? If it just has to break the ring, I got 90-1x. If it has to be more than half, I got 89-1x.
Also, a disclaimer... I thought I had ten rounds loaded. I shot them, and found only nine holes. Did I miss one? Did I miscount and load nine? Did I pull a Patton (If I did, it had to have been my x-ring shot )? I loaded another shot and got one of those nine-ring hits. I didn't win my division anyway, so I don't think it really matters, but I figured I should tell you all.
Same lower as before. Upper is from Brownells. Sights are straight from Mao's dollar store, via fleabay. Couldn't get them to adjust elevation either, so I'll have to figure that one out. Used "Kentucky elevation" and came out halfway decent (I thought) anyway. First time this upper has been out! Notice my sling mount Shoelaces are handy to have around. I tried to use the sling, but it was pulling my shots WAY left, so I shot for score prone unsupported without the sling. Ammo was the same Federal American Eagle 55 gr FMJ. Except that last shot, which was an American Eagle 50 gr HP. Glad it shot to the same point of aim (maybe). The sign I passed on the way to go shoot said 33.8 degrees on the way out, and somewhere close to 38 when I drove back. Wish it was about twenty degrees colder! Since I hike rather than risk the drive, I think I'd rather deal with frozen mud than liquid mud and just throw on a couple more layers.
Al considered, great shooting
Well I gave it a shot, but both rifles I tried to use shoot pretty high. Had no sight picture and didn't hit the paper half the time. Oh well! Maybe next month.
Well, it looks like Maxxhavoc is the overall and class 1 winner with a 96-2x and one more 10 than me. Great shooting! Not sure about the class 2, I was surprised we didn't get a lot more scoped "deer" rifles out as these were legal rifles for class 2. Guess they'd rather shoot small groups off a bench. Thanks for all who got out and gave it a whirl. Hopefully we can keep some of these running.
looking forward to shooting in some balmy 40 degree weather!
Lionking has a rimfire match posted for this month. Maybe come April we'll see.Are we going to do one for next month? How about a bench rest class as well? If we do something similar again as well I'm going to give it a shot. This time I'll just post a target below the target for score to have something to aim at!
