Hmmm...I wonder if there's a way to affix a really thin and really tough filament wire to the end of that bullet, and turn it into a mini-grappling hook...?
While 7.5" penetration in properly calibrated gel is not very good...if that gel is denser and this load gets 12-13" in properly calibrated gel, then it would be an outstanding defensive round. Large, permanent cavity, ideal penetration (without over-penetrating). Any tests of this load in calibrated gel?

But people are not made of gel. That non-homogeneity is usually glossed over, but this is a really unusual projectile! If your target was muscular or fatty enough to have a couple of inches of soft tissue outside of the ribs and those petals start to open up there, I could imagine penetration through the ribs really going into the toilet.
In a way, I agree with realgun.
It reminds me of the online experts who've never handled a Python, much less shot one, and talk about it's not that great, fragile, goes out of time easily, etc.
I would tend to think that 7" of penetration (or 5" or any depth in that range) with a 2"(!) wound channel is going to be a fight stopper; the pain itself of that size a bullet wound has to be astronomic. And add in the rapid, large loss of blood...
I mean hold a ruler up to your chest or gut and see just how deep 7" is. Maybe it won't reach the vitals or spine but that would have to hurt worse than smashing your thumb with a sledge hammer...
Interesting. I was given a cobray lienad DD .410 derringer and that thing sucked balls. I would guess 4 inches penetration from buckshot, maybe an inch from birdshot. Then again, with a 3" shell, the barrel length was around a 1/5" (Yeah, you read that right) So basically no barrel. I ended up cracking part of the release latch by firing BB +P hardcast .45LC through it remotely in a vise with string as a test. Oops.
