Just looking for input on a 6.5x55 "modern" rifle.

"The difference is in the psi that the modern actions can take that the small ring mausers can't "

The M96 Swedish Mauser would have to be considered a modern rifle by that standard. The earlier 6.5x55 rifles are the ones that can't take the higher pressures. A former Lyman employee involved in load testing told me that their test actions for the reloading manual testing are Model 96 Swedish Mauser actions.

Jrdolall;

Between my son & myself we have several 6.5 Swede rifles, including a Tikka, 550 CZ's, and the 1994 Remington.

Mine's the Tikka, but it's also a full-on custom gun, Tikka simply supplied the donor left hand action. It will put it's 140 grain Sierra GameKings into itty-bitty holes off the bench. They leave the muzzle at a nominal 2725 fps from a Lilja 22" sporter weight barrel. I do use the gun for elk hunting every year & don't feel undergunned.

My son has a CZ550 fullstock that he's working up loads for now. He's got a target load & is now after a hunting load. The gun, using the target load, can ring the 1 foot diameter 600 yard gong just about every time. When it doesn't, it means he misjudged the wind.

Take a look at a Steyr. Any Steyr in the caliber you seek. The fluted barrel is artwork and they are delivered at custom gun spec's.

hmm.. just looked at some ballistics charts for what a 6.5x55 can do maxed out to over 60kpsi from a modern action.. basically noticeably less drop and even less drift (due to the higher velocity) using 123 grain hornady SST bullets vs my preferred 196 grain 8mm mauser... and this was all the way out to 1,000 yards still being well over supersonic

compared to my 8mm which achieves the ballistics chart i compared to with a 196 grain bullet producing 3,500ft/lbs of muzzle energy, the 6.5x55 has a similar point of impact at 1,000 yards and does so with a 123 grain bullet leaving the muzzle with 2100ft/lbs of energy... which means both are capable of 1000 yard shooting, similar drop, similar drift, similar kinetic energy remaining but the 6.5x55 will have significantly less recoil

great round, even greater when pressures are increased

of the "modern" actions out there for this cartridge if i were to buy one right now, no hesitation id probably get the CZ-550 full stock rifle.. gorgeous piece of work and can handle the type of loads i described in 6.5x55

Can you still get the regular CZ 550 in 6.5x55? From what I can tell the are now going with the push feed 557 as their main rifle instead of the Mauser action 550. I'd rather have the 550, and if I got one it would be in this caliber or a Tikka T3 Hunter in .260 Remington.

Pilot;

Why would you change calibers just because you picked a different platform? I do believe that Tikka offers the Hunter in 6.5 Swede. Call SoDak Sports in Aberdeen SoDakia & see if they've got, or can get, one. They are a Tikka Master Dealer.

I just looked at the CZ USA site though & they show the CZ550 fullstock available in 6.5 Swede. I know CZ imports it because my son has one.

I actually prefer .260 Remington, and these cartridges are so similar ballistically I would pick a rifle available in either. It was unclear to me that CZ still offered the full stock 550 in 6.5 Swede. Thanks for letting me know. I need to look at their website again. Although after reading some reviews of the Tikka T3 Hunter, I don't know now.
