I've seen a lot of posts regarding CA and NY CCW laws.
How hard is it to actually get a carry license in each of these states?
Are there any states, other than open carry or no-permit-required states, that do not have CCW?

Depends on your local police chief and/or sheriff.

Some places like Los Angeles are very very difficult to get them from, I know a few people from Bakersfield (city) and my 'hood, Orange County (county sheriff) that got them.

Most states, a CCW is good for the entire state. Here in the PRKa, it's by county. As to how hard it is to get one, I think that depends on where you are and who (ie: easier for Feinstein to get one than me.)

In CA, a CCW is good for the entire state, not just the issuing county. No other state recognizes a CA CCW, nor does CA recognize any others.

Lets put it this way....

San Francisco = 8 ccws
Los Angeles = 44 ccws

So for the two major cities that have a population of million and millions of people a total of 52 ccws.

Noban, are you sure? I was at a shooting range last weekend and was listening to a cop explain that CCw's were issued, and valid in, a county-by-county basis.

I can answer for Noban,

That LEO is mistaken about the law (funny that we trust him to enforce it). A CCW issued in Kali (regardless of county) is good for all of Kali.

It is after all a California Concealed Weapons Permit, not a San Berdino, or Modest Concealed Weapons Permit.

In retrospect, maybe what the LEO has confused is that a CCW is issued by the Sheriff or Police Chief only to the residents of his county, It was different before, but the law changed in 1998 hence, you as a resident of a county (having maintained residency for a certain period) can only apply for a CCW from the head LEO of that county, but once you have a CCW, it is good for the whole state.

Absolutely correct. I'm looking at mine now and it states at the very top:

Lincense to Carry Concealed Pistol, Revolver, or Other Firearm Within the State of California

The tricky part is that you have to reside in the county of the issuing agency; either the county sheriff or the chief of police, and the majority (ok ALL) of the major metro areas won't issue one. Now in the central valley or up way north it's probably different.

The only places you can't carry, as stated in the DOJ paperwork is: Federal Property, and businesses who's primary business is the selling of alcohol for consumption on the premise (bars), which was further defined to EXCLUDE businesses that sell alcohol AND serve food (restaurants) OR have live music/dancing (nightclubs) because the selling of alcohol is not the primary business.

Yup, thats what mine says too.

At the bottom of the Kali permit, is an area called restrictions(if any). A buddy of mine, who owns/operates Defensive Pistol and CCW training tells me that 99% of the counties use that space to put in County Only or other nefarious, petty curbs on our freedoms. It's good for the entire state if that space is blank, else it's up to the local LEO to what you get.

A California CCW is recognized by 9 other States. They are AK, ID, IN, KY, MI, MT, OK, TN, and UT.

I believe that that is not literally true. Counties rarely have authority to override state law. They may put the restriction there, but I don't believe "county only" would be a legal restriction.

Just my opinion, of course. Your .02 refunded if you get arrested. ;)

Quarterbone: you got a picture with your CCW??? I didn't get no stinking picture!!!!!!!!:cuss:

Actually on mine "Restrictions" it says "see reverse" and on the reverse it just states the standard No Nos.

No carrying under influence of alcohol or medication
No carrying in airports or planes (ESPECIALLY IF YOUR MIDDLE EASTERN)
No carrying in the courts
No carrying on school property
No carrying in the State Buildings (apparently politicians don't trust us)

If you can believe it; the picture part of the permit is optional. I chose to have the picture on my first permit, but havn't bothered on my renewals.

If this is the case, it may be that I missed some of what the cop had been saying. (Or, he himself didn't know.) Thanks for the heads up.

Ohio does NOT have CCW in any way/shape/form.

There are 5 others that also DO NOT HAVE CCW. Kansas & Missourri are both No Carry, unless I am grossly mistaken [not beyond the realm of possibility] and I do not recall the others right now.

Alaska just became a "No Permit Required", similar to Vermont. Alaska will still issue, for the reasons of having the "paper ticket" to prove to other states that have reciprocity w/Alaska

Yeah, me and those other 7 guys should get together and go bowling some time; but unfortunately they're all probably political cronies or campaign contributors- no fun at all.

The hard way; I don't suggest you use my method.

I used to manage a indoor shooting range/retail store in Santa Clara, CA. We were also the local LE NFA/ClassIII dealer. I applied when we started having to transport the select fire stuff in my personal vehicle. I figured 'I'm a good guy, I'm transporting machine guns to law enforcement dept.- what's not to like?'

Nope. "Insufficient reason given for justification for CCW" was the response I got back, which told me that unless you are one of the above mentioned political cronies or contributor, the chance of ANY average citizen getting one were slim and none.

And then we had a little incident at the range

After that, they decided that yeah, maybe it might be good idea that I was armed at all times.

KIDS! Don't try this at home.

edit: forgot to add that I was living in Santa Clara County at the time but when I moved they transferred it to SF County.

In Kali, it depends on the county you are in. A friend I shoot with lives near Oakland in Alameda County, and he got a CCW permit no problem. In my (Santa Clara) County, you couldn't get a permit for a boatload of gold bars. I have heard that Orange County near LA has some that do issue, but LA proper is a "No Way" zone.

The good news is that if you have a permit, all of Kali has to honor it. But, you have to be an actual resident of the county to apply, you can't just drive over and get one.
