found this scope new on line for $200; should I(apparently it is now discontinued)?

I own a vx2 in 2-7 and compared to Nikon prostaff, vortex, and leupold vx1 its 5x the scope!

Discontinued? I thought it was odd Natchez showed a vx1 and vx3 in their catalog last night but nothing in vx2.

The VX-2 just became the VX-Freedom. Dunno if they made any changes, other than the name.

the freedoms are a little lower in price, so i assume they made some changes.
Well that sucks!! I'm glad i got my vx2 when i did. I compared bother the Vx1 and VX2 side by side and the Vx2 seemed like the housing and turrets were a little better and the glass about 40% better IMO. I've been debating on getting a VX2 in a higher power 14-18 to replace my Vortex crossfire II 6-18 but i hate to say it i looked through the vx2 on 7x and the Vortex on 18x and i couldn't really tell a big difference.

I have a VX1 3-9 on my Ruger 77 Hawkeye. For the one week a year that I actually use it, other than checking zero, it is fine. As I recall the price was about $130 on ebay shipped and no tax NIB.

ya, DDDWHO, i might have to settle for the VX-1. tho kikon,s are on sale at cabelas right now for a hundred. i just need something with a better eye relief then the chinese scope on the 700 now. my shots have always been under 50-60 yards. i dont need a fancy one. just something that works for a few weeks a year.

Is this for a hunting rifle? I have Nikon prostaffs and right before the sun goes down i cant see squat but this past season i was able to make a 110yard shot in thick hardwoods on a 150'' buck. I'm not a sales guy for leupold but even the vx1 at minimum would blow that Nikon out of the water. Also, since eye relief is an issue look at both models and compare eye relief. When i was setting up my lever action the leupold 2-7 offered more than any Burris, Nikon, Bushnell i looked at. I was a big fan of the Nikon BDC as well but in a hunting situation when its getting low light they have become useless. I am slowly changing everything over to non BDC scopes if that helps.

Good luck in whatever you choose. I got my vx2 on amazon for about $200 when they put it on sale but a Nikon maybe better for you, you just have to try them both.

i would honestly prefer the VX-1 and i have some time before i need to get one. just trying keep the cost down. I so far its only a 309 dollar hunting rifle after rebate. and it did slay a deer last season.

My experience is exactly the opposite. While i wouldnt chose one of the new buckmasters 2s over a vx-1 or rifleman, id take an old prostaff over either.
I do choose original new prostaff or original buckmasters over the vx-2, as they are generally in the same price range used.
I think i actually like the athlons i own, and the bushnell elites better than either tho.
Again that just goes to show the difference in how people see thru scopes. Its best to try as many as you can hefore buying.

That said the VX-2 is rarely a bad choice, and (imo) never a bad choice for a general hunting rifle.

The main difference in the clarity/low light for me i noticed between the two brands was the Nikon you can almost see inside the scope like a tunnel and the luepold i cannot see the inside walls. I also think the luepold might have a little more FOV making it appear clearer for me.

Ive heard people say that the leupolds have a smaller "ring" of scope tube visible around the edges of the image, which has been my experience as well.
If your actually seeing the inside of the scope under normal conditions then you most likely have an issue with eye relief, or head placement.
Im pretty sure you mean the "ring", just checking....

My issue with leupolds is that while they (vx-2+) give me a good image, and object resolution is good, I have an issue with overall brightness, and everything looks a little brown/yellow. This makes them useable, but not pleasant to look thru.
Again this is most likely something to do with how my eye (and contacts) and leupolds coatings deal with light.
There hasnt been any other brands ive had as much of an issue with, but theres also no other brands besides leupold i keep trying.
One other ive had similar issues with is the very large, expensive, and (besides wierd lighting issue) very nice Trijicon one of my friends has on his .308.

Again this isnt to say i dont like Leupolds, I do, and i recommend them, especially for general hunting rifles. For specific uses i think there are better options at a lower price point, still unless the scope itself is poorly suited for the task, a leupold is rarely a bad choice.

At that price I’d get one because I see extremely well through VX-2’s. If I saw through them the way LoonWulf does I wouldn’t. If you have the chance to look through one before purchasing you should.

The VX-2 has noticeably better glass than a VX-1.

Never an issue with any Leupold scope and I own Leupold exclusive. The best warranty you will xever need.:thumbup:

+1 I can attest to this!

While I was putting my rifle back in the gun safe this year, it slide off a chair & fell just right to bend the scope tube at the ring juncture. I was sick. I sent the scope to Leupold explaining what had happened - clearly my fault. They no longer make the same model in that power so they replaced it at no cost with a newer, more expensive scope!

Scope prices/quality/service are quite competitive these days, but I'm a Leupold scope buyer for life!

IMO....

One more vote for buying a good scope for any hunting rifle. This one was taken about 25 minutes after sunset at last light. 155 yards as later verified (he dropped, stood, then fell over). The rifle belonged to my father who had a broken Bushnell, so I pulled my Sightron from my rifle to replace it.

He insisted I take the first shot and thanks to the glass and 150 gr max. load of Triple 7 I got a lasting memory and lesson. I very much doubt that Banner would have spotted him at all. His choice of replacement was a Leupold and I have more of them than any other brand at present.

Do yourself a favor, buy the VX-2.

For an idea on scale, my hand spans 10” which is size XL or in some cases 2XL glove.

Picked up a new VX-2 for $200 and plan to put it on my hunting rifle and practice with it this spring. I have another Leupold on my 22lr and the clarity is excellent. Plus it’s made in the USA with a lifetime warranty.
