Lipsey special edition J frame in 38 and 32mag

At $759 it is tempting to trade my standard 442 in for the carry improvements on the Lipsey model. The only question is, .38spl or .32H&R Mag? Probably .32, an extra round, more comfortable to shoot, similar capability (at least vs. standard velocity .38spl). I'm a fan of the 110gr .38 Critical Defense (both +P and standard velocity). I'll have to check some gel testing on the .32mag. The only other question is, do I actually trade the 442, or just "replace" it...

Neither. Keep the 642; you're just adding to your choices.

I'm thinking the closest equivalent might be something like the Winchester Supreme Elite .38 Special +P 130 Grain JHP.

Maybe. I don't remember how they tested.

While I like the Luckygunner tests, everything penetrates more in Clear gel. 14 inches is more like 10-12 in proper ballistics gelatin, for example. At the same time, bullets don't expand quite as easily in Clear because it's less dense.

Of course even proper ballistics gelatin only simulates muscle tissue. The best use of all of these gels is to compare bullets against eachother with it.

My point is no .32 mag or .38 load expands and penetrates to my satisfaction from a 2 inch barrel. Sometimes the hottest .38 +P does, but not consistently and always with heavy recoil.

Therefore I choose non-hollow point bullets that penetrate more. Heavier bullets with enough speed are better at breaking bones and not deflecting away from the initial path. So are very fast bullets, but we can't really get that with these two calibers.

I choose a 100 gr SWC as fast as possible in .32 mag (950 fps from a 2 inch) and In .38 a 125 to 158 gr +P SWC depending on weight of the gun and point of impact.

Longer barrels change things of course.

One or more of the boutique ammo companies produces a cast full wadcutter +p load in 38 special. I wouldn’t load them in a speedloader, but for the initial five shots I like the idea of a full diameter nose punching a big hole.

Hope this hasn't been posted already.

Looks like a great J frame edition (Ultimate Carry) with a lot of upgrades AND 32mag coming back which I love;
NIICE! Is the frame steel or aluminum, or whatever light alloy they use now? NO lock hole! (YAY!) Now, if they would only do a 3" barrel. I'm assuming (a dangerous word) that if they would do a 65 Ladysmith style revolver with the 3" barrel, and also +P or 357 Magnum/38 Spl. rating, it would probably sell like hotcaaes!😍

Al frame from the info I have seen on it. No lock is a key (har har) thing for me as I just can't stand the look of them, nor need/want it. That said, I don't think this model was ever made with a lock on them due to their design (guess there).

Sorry, I don't need something that small/light in 357.

Nice! I’d be in for a .38. Lots of reloading components, 5 gallon bucket full of brass, years loading it. And some Speer 135 grain ammo in my stash as well. Wish I could find decent re-manufactured 148 grain wadcutters or 158 SWC’s like I used to get for $7/box, but I can reload them OK too. I’ll be watching for one of these in the wild.

OK. So I made a liar out of myself. I bought an old third model Hand Ejector, 32 S&W Long, "I" (eye) frame Smith and Wesson not too long ago. I ran a box of wadcutters through it and thought it was sort of fun, so I stopped at the gun store and picked up a couple more boxes. But they weren't the same thing. The wadcutters were Fiocchi, and so were the next ones, but they weren't wadcutters. They were 97 grain, FMJ, at a listed on the box velocity of 949 FPS. Now, I know very little to nothing about the 32 S&W Long, but that sounded HOT to me. Maybe too hot for a little 100 year old "eye" frame.

So I did the only thing I could do. I went to Buds, found a Taurus 327 and put it layaway (The least expensive 32 I saw). That should handle them.

I tried wadcutters in speed strips and was surprised that they can be as fast as FMJ’s. I’d assumed they just couldn’t work, but now I plan to practice with them in live fire and see how they do.
