My sister (who lives in Panama) is here in the states for a few weeks visiting. While she is here, she wants to buy a .22 rifle to take back to Panama with her. She says that everybody in Panama comes to the US to buy rifles (at least .22s) because they are cheaper and better made.
I know she couldn't buy a handgun without being a resident of the state (I am in New Hampshire right now), but I am not sure about a long gun. Can she do that?
I told her to just order on off the internet.
And help would be appreciated. Thanks

CZ 452 LUX Preferably one of the older ones before the "A" prefix. They run $200 to $250 used around here. Fantastic rifle, amazingly accurate, tougher than any other .22 I know of. It's built and balanced like a high end commercial Mauser. I've killed a mass amount of small game with mine.

I don't believe she can just order it on the internet from a dealer stateside, though. But she should be able to get the same rifles from Panama. They're Czech and are available all over.

My understand is, she can't unless she's a perm res. or otherwise a legal alien with a hunting license and a certain amount of time in state. And there may be additional problems with buying it stateside and then trying to get back through Panama customs.

That is more or less what I told her, but I wasn't sure. For a handgun, I knew she had to be a resident, but long guns are much less restricted.
As far as Panama, I told her flying with it out of the US was no problem, what happened when she landed in Panama was her problem. She seemed to think it wasn't a big deal there (I know down there, money finds a way somehow:rolleyes:).

I spent 2 1/2 years in the CZ. I would suggest something in stainless steel unless you're prepared to clean and oil it religiously.

The answer to the

correct rifle is a K10-22 (stainless 10-22) unless semi-autos are verboten.

The problem is federal law. As a resident of Panama, even though a U.S. citizen, she can't legally purchase a firearm -- ANY firearm -- in the U.S.

The Second Amendment Foundation currently has two suits running in federal court -- one in Texas and the other in Ohio -- challenging the legal prohibition on expatriates buying firearms. Why TX and OH? Because the 5th Circuit has ruled the Second Amendment protects an individual right, and the 6th Circuit has ruled the opposite. SAF is hoping for contradictory rulings, opening the door to a SCOTUS case.

Hmm. As a relative, I don't think there is anything prohibiting you from giving her a rifle. As long as its not a straw purchase, you can give her a nice gift.:)

something cheap, and will stand up to the weather, would be a marlin mod 60 in stainless, or mod 981 bolt action stainless. both will be about 150 and 180 dollars repectively , they will have either lam or synth stocks, and of course will be stainless steel, with the great marlin accuracy. Plus she will have plenty of money left over , to pay off anyone she needs to, in Panamanian air staff, customs, police, etc.

Careful! That's still a transfer, and you can't transfer to a person you know to be prohibited. That includes foreigners.

Being a relative has zero bearing on the transaction.

The obvious answer is to ask the ATF via email or letter.

This is Panama, The Republic Of, correct? I mean, we're not talking about Panama City, Florida, are we?

The reason I ask is because during my trips to the Republic of Panama, I never got the impression that they could own guns. I mean, you can't even buy switchblades there.

Wait. That's Mexico. I did buy some switchblades in Panama. $4 each.

Never mind.

Thought about that; however, I am not currently a resident of New Hampshire (used to be, but then so did she). Thanks all, I will pass on your suggestions as which to get, and tell her go the internet route if she wants one.
