Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

I’m either switching to 6 creedmoor or gay tiger

I have another 6 creed barrel for my Seekins, and two more Dasher barrels for my Defiance. I’ll likely put together another Defiance (maybe Impact) but in 6 creed. Once those two Dasher barrels are gone, unless the game totally changes, I’ll either stay Dasher or go all Creed.

I’m interested to see where the 25 cals go in the next couple of years.

I talked a bit around this topic this morning with another shooter - not the same angle as “picking which cartridge,” but rather discussing how the game might change in coming years and how cartridges could change with that.

Prevalence of target flashers (and shorter max ranges in many cases) made room for the 6mm’s to take over, and unless the game changes, I believe that will hold.

But....

I think there are many things about the game which could change in the next few years - I’m not sure any of them would dictate a larger caliber, higher recoil cartridge, but it’s feasible to me. If we shot smaller targets at longer ranges, for example, where a 30lb rifle in 25 RSAUM or 6.5 PRC could become more advantageous than dis.

There’s been a lot of PRS specific stuff, a sub-cat of long range shooting, but by and large, I feel like we’ve done 30+ pages here of discussing long range rifles and optics, plus dabbling in other gear and techniques.

The thread title is much different than the topic of conversation so I had never seen this thread. While I don't compete in any sanctioned matches, I've had a good time with my 6x47L. This is the second one I have put together and @taliv hooked me up on the action

how's it shooting?

this has been a great thread, mostly because of the progression

Title is fine, I guess I was reading it wrong, looked to me like someone was looking for a scope. Now that I read it again, I see my error

@taliv - The gun shoots well. I put a 26" 7.5 twist Hawk Hill barrel on it. This was a few weeks ago, 3 shots at 1000 yards on a 12" plate. Definitely not a typical day for me but the wind was dead calm and I was in a groove.

Load was a 115 RDF and RL16.

I really enjoy this thread. I am still thinking about a competition gun, but am not sure I want to play with a 6 Dasher or just stick with 6 Creedmoor. While I figure that out, I'll spend some time playing with the Bergara Premium HMR Pro in 6.5 PRC that's on its way to my FFL. $1,300 delivered seemed like a reasonable price to check out the new cartridge. Of course, I'll need dies and brass, too.

We've come a long way since @Walkalong asked opinions about a Ruger Hawkeye Long Range!

Jeff that works with me and shot at Blakely with Sam and I just started reloading and had a couple of rounds that would barely chamber this last weekend (Somewhere in Tennessee) . A gunsmith there told him he had a carbon ring and to clean the snot out of it. He had to finish with a borrowed gun he said was two mills off on windage.

I looked at his leftover rounds a few minutes ago and he had high primers on quite a few, with a couple so high he was seating them further on chambering. I had warned him about seating primers and getting them below flush, hopefully to the bottom of the primer pocket, but he did not check them. Said he was seating on the press, pressing real hard on them, and although he has a Hornady hand primer "it didn't work". He is going to bring it in tomorrow for me to look at.

A tough "learning" experience for him. 6 Creedmoor by the way. His action must have a strong firing pin system as he had no failures to fire, even on the two he jammed in there, which would still be above flush.

Now that I look closer, it includes that scale. Definitely a big step up for me, and not a bad price for the package.

That scale is rated +/- .002 Grams, which is .030864717 Grains. I am hand weighing to +/- .02 Grs, but I don't have faith in the scales repeatability. So I would be getting a really good scale and trickler that would be so much easier/faster. And likely more than good enough for my shooting ability. To get less of a spread looks like it would double the price of the scale.

If you read the A&D FX120i was accurate to 0.002gram somewhere, it was a typo.

The A&D balance commonly used in the Autotrickler set up is accurate to +/-1mg (+/-0.001g), which is +/-0.015grains. Same as what you’re likely using, I assume a Gempro 250, calling it 0.02grn. 1mg precision is common in this type of analytical balance.

Not the first time I have seen guys get that flipped, since “+/-0.001g” is pretty easy to confuse for grains instead of grams, and then equally back, when guys convert that to 0.015 or 0.02g, g meaning grains instead of grams....

But the A&D is capable of +/-0.001 GRAMS precision.

That's exactly right. I found that when checking weights between the GemPro 250 and the FX120 they were usually in agreement. The benefit with the FX120 is in the speed of the readout. I'm sure it's also more repeatable. That's the difference between a magnetic load cell and a mechanical balance. Add the serial port interface included with the FX120 and now you can install the Auto Trickler, and Auto Thrower if you want it. That gets you to a whole 'nother level of speed and convenience. Just punch in your targeted charge weight on the iPhone app, put your pan on the scale and it will trickle up to that weight within +/- 0.02gn every time.

That's HUGE when you have to load a bunch of rounds for a match and want accuracy to the kernal

Repeatability (Std. Deviation) 0.001 grams
Linearity ± 0.002 grams

But the A&D is capable of +/-0.001 GRAMS precision.
That would be better of course.

So, for the genius's here, what is the difference between Std Deviation and Linearity? Or should I just not worry about it and just know that this scale is plenty good enough. :)

(Yes, I read the links to the definitions, which is why I quoted Linearity.)

Ok, read the definition of Linearity, very clear now. *Sigh* I worry about me sometimes. :)

In my defense, I was reading about Linearity the first time, and not that linked definition.
