Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

Short Action Customs also announced last week that they now have their modular action wrenches available for sale.

....looking into my crystal ball I see more of my disposable income flowing to Mark in the near future...

Not that it’s super difficult to set up an “old school barrel vise,” but the SAC modular is super slick. Makes me drool every time it crosses my screen.

I love shooting at things far away with a rifle/caliber combo that is pushing the limits.

My shoot far guns have all had the same roots. 700 action with a krieger barrel put on by my gunsmith in an HS Precision pull off stock. Net cost? ~$1300.

Of course, if you can spend more, by all means. I’ve just never been crazy about buying an off the shelf “precision” rifle. Dealt enough with copper fouling and that alone is enough to steer me away.

As for glass, no need to break the bank. My favorite scope is Nightforce. Vortex PST line and up for a bang for the buck scope, Swarovski if you can spend the money.

if you just gonna bang steel, a 10x is good enough.

I get it, and the modular action wrench is a neat idea. I have one for my Impact and one for my MPA/Curtis (And one for a RBLP Stolle (IIRC) I no longer have), so I am good to go for awhile.

Me too, I ordered one three weeks ago, only reason it isn't here yet is they were out of the anodized ones. Maybe soon.

Those are real nice.

That’s the prototype. The final product is really nice and a good complement to the modular vice

SAC has been investing a lot in their capabilities lately. They moved into a new shop last year and have added a few new multi-toolhead milling centers.

It would not surprise me if their future plans include manufacturing their own actions

I know this thread is predominately geared toward PRS but I though I'd share my experiences from shooting a 2 day NRA regional 600 yard match that my son and I attended over the weekend

I was shooting 6 BRA in F Open and he was shooting .223 in F/TR.

The match was well attended with over 60 shooters from multiple states and split pretty evenly between F Class and Sling. Several shooters were past state and national champs so the quality of competition was high.

Course of fire was 6 matches, 20 shots each for record, then the aggregate for each day plus the grand agg for the weekend (120 shots)

Both my son and I achieved personal bests over the weekend with him acquiring enough points to earn his High Master certification!

He shot his best the last match on Sunday with a 198 - 10x, which tied for first place with the guy who won the grand agg (Unfortunately, he lost the tie breaker). Now consider this, he's 16, the only one using a .223 (a Savage no less) shooting against some of the best F/TR guys in the country with custom built rifles. Needless to say, he got some attention and a lot of complements.

I managed to clean 3 of the 6 matches. I only dropped one shot on Saturday with a 599 - 37x...….which was good enough for 3rd that day. That's how good these guys are. I ended up 4th in the grand agg for the weekend (1195/76x) and very happy about that, however, my highlight for the event was being a part of my son's accomplishments, naturally.

To add a note about the final match on Sunday. The wind had gotten VERY tricky where it would switch with no notice. I shot my worst of the weekend with a 197 - 10x. I was in the pits pulling the target next to my son's when he shot his final 198 - 10x. The guy pulling his target say to me, "you need to look at this". His first 5 shots were all in the X, grouped in a tiny knot. Wish I could have gotten a picture of that.

No reason why they couldn't.

Email said the modular vise should ship this week.

That's awesome. Great shooting on your part as well.

Man, congrats and kudos to you son. Goes to show you can’t buy talent. I’ve never owned an “expensive” rifle. I’m not good enough to need em.

Which Savage is he shooting? I’ve never had one and am in the market for .223 bolt gun to clown around with.

It’s a Model 12 BVSS. I installed a Shilen 30” match barrel that was throated to shoot the Berger 90 gn VLDs, a Rifle Basix trigger and Nightforce BR 10-42 scope.

It’s been one of the easiest rifles I’ve had for tuning a load, even with the 90g bullets, which are known to be a bit fussy.

5 shot groups in the 1’s and 2’s at 100 yards are common

Was that barrel a drop in or did you have a smith fit it? My buddy had a similar rifle in .308 and he had his barrel fitted and did away with the barrel nut. Judging by your results he may have gone through a bit of trouble for nothing.

And man, those Bergers sure do fly straight, don’t they? Their hunting VLDs in my .308 were like put sugar on Frosted Flakes

It was an off the shelf prefit.

.223 and .308 shoot together in the F/TR category of F Class. The 90 VLDs have ballistics that closely match the Berger .30 cal 185g Juggernaut so you get similar performance with none of the recoil.

Natureboy those are awesome groups...wow

Just finished putting together my .223 bolt action, Remington stainless bull 24"/ 1:9 twist/5R rifling on a Woox chassis. What twist rate is your barrel?

I took the Dasher out after work, "tuned" the APA Gen III brake a little bit, have three set screws out, double checked zero at 100, then chroned three rounds from the batch I loaded for the Altus shoot I missed last year. I had five, but had the wrong screen up on the first two shots so they didn't get recorded. The three shots were 2955, 2956, & 2957. Third time out with no chrono errors.

I am cleaning the rifle now. I patched it with Tactical Advantage, then ran a nylon brush back and forth five times, then patched it until they came out clean, then ran a couple of wet patches through, and it is sitting for now. I'll let it sit an hour or so, then patch it, brush it, then patch it, then let it soak overnight before patching it some more. It will be interesting to check it with the bore scope tomorrow.

Which load was this?

Lapua 6 BR brass fire formed with 31.0 Grs RL 15, 32.0 Grs RL-15 (32.3 is better in my gun) CCI-450 primer, Berger 105 Hybrid .010 to .015 off the lands. Today is the best SD I have had with that load. Barrel has sped up around 70/75 FPS since it was new.

32.0 Grs RL-15. Berger 105 Hybrid. CCI-450.

I forgot to mention the Gen III brake is more effective than the Gen 2 LB I had on it. I am glad I bought it.
