Got called into work three times today, well, twice, technically I was already there the third time, building a stand for items like a table vise, a barrel vise, a scope tool, a multi base, etc.
I get it, and the modular action wrench is a neat idea. I have one for my Impact and one for my MPA/Curtis (And one for a RBLP Stolle (IIRC) I no longer have), so I am good to go for awhile.Short Action Customs also announced last week that they now have their modular action wrenches available for sale.
....looking into my crystal ball I see more of my disposable income flowing to Mark in the near future...
Me too, I ordered one three weeks ago, only reason it isn't here yet is they were out of the anodized ones. Maybe soon. Not that it’s super difficult to set up an “old school barrel vise,” but the SAC modular is super slick. Makes me drool every time it crosses my screen.
Those are real nice.
That's awesome. Great shooting on your part as well.He shot his best the last match on Sunday with a 198 - 10x, which tied for first place with the guy who won the grand agg (Unfortunately, he lost the tie breaker). Now consider this, he's 16,
I know this thread is predominately geared toward PRS but I though I'd share my experiences from shooting a 2 day NRA regional 600 yard match that my son and I attended over the weekend
I was shooting 6 BRA in F Open and he was shooting .223 in F/TR.
The match was well attended with over 60 shooters from multiple states and split pretty evenly between F Class and Sling. Several shooters were past state and national champs so the quality of competition was high.
Course of fire was 6 matches, 20 shots each for record, then the aggregate for each day plus the grand agg for the weekend (120 shots)
Both my son and I achieved personal bests over the weekend with him acquiring enough points to earn his High Master certification!
He shot his best the last match on Sunday with a 198 - 10x, which tied for first place with the guy who won the grand agg (Unfortunately, he lost the tie breaker). Now consider this, he's 16, the only one using a .223 (a Savage no less) shooting against some of the best F/TR guys in the country with custom built rifles. Needless to say, he got some attention and a lot of complements.
I managed to clean 3 of the 6 matches. I only dropped one shot on Saturday with a 599 - 37x...….which was good enough for 3rd that day. That's how good these guys are. I ended up 4th in the grand agg for the weekend (1195/76x) and very happy about that, however, my highlight for the event was being a part of my son's accomplishments, naturally.
To add a note about the final match on Sunday. The wind had gotten VERY tricky where it would switch with no notice. I shot my worst of the weekend with a 197 - 10x. I was in the pits pulling the target next to my son's when he shot his final 198 - 10x. The guy pulling his target say to me, "you need to look at this". His first 5 shots were all in the X, grouped in a tiny knot. Wish I could have gotten a picture of that.
Which Savage is he shooting? I’ve never had one and am in the market for .223 bolt gun to clown around with.
It’s a Model 12 BVSS. I installed a Shilen 30” match barrel that was throated to shoot the Berger 90 gn VLDs, a Rifle Basix trigger and Nightforce BR 10-42 scope.

It’s been one of the easiest rifles I’ve had for tuning a load, even with the 90g bullets, which are known to be a bit fussy.
5 shot groups in the 1’s and 2’s at 100 yards are common

Was that barrel a drop in or did you have a smith fit it? My buddy had a similar rifle in .308 and he had his barrel fitted and did away with the barrel nut. Judging by your results he may have gone through a bit of trouble for nothing.
And man, those Bergers sure do fly straight, don’t they? Their hunting VLDs in my .308 were like put sugar on Frosted Flakes
What twist rate is your barrel?
Which load was this?I took the Dasher out after work, "tuned" the APA Gen III brake a little bit, have three set screws out, double checked zero at 100, then chroned three rounds from the batch I loaded for the Altus shoot I missed last year. I had five, but had the wrong screen up on the first two shots so they didn't get recorded. The three shots were 2955, 2956, & 2957. Third time out with no chrono errors.
I am cleaning the rifle now. I patched it with Tactical Advantage, then ran a nylon brush back and forth five times, then patched it until they came out clean, then ran a couple of wet patches through, and it is sitting for now. I'll let it sit an hour or so, then patch it, brush it, then patch it, then let it soak overnight before patching it some more. It will be interesting to check it with the bore scope tomorrow.
